CFDA Inducts 26 New Members for 2010, Including L'Wren Scott and Sophie Theallet

>> Wednesday evening, Vera Wang moved almost all of the furniture out of her vast Park Avenue apartment to toast this year's 26 new CFDA inductees. “It may not be as big as Donna Karan’s loft, but I can fit you all in,” Wang said of her duplex, which she estimated was hosting 300 guests. Tommy Hilfiger and wife Dee Ocleppo were impressed, however - The Cut caught them exclaiming: “It's amazing. The kitchen is sick. Our kitchen is like, a tenth of that size. That's like a restaurant kitchen.”

The new members include: Waris Ahluwalia - who said of the honor, “I feel like I almost should put this on my passport as my fashion visa. It's nice to make this baby official!", Steven Alan, Lisa Axelson of Ann Taylor, Lubov Azria, Shane Baum of Baumvision, Vicki Beamon and Karen Erickson of Erickson Beamon, George Esquivel, Robert Geller, Gary Graham, Ulrich Grimm of Calvin Klein, Sang A Im-Propp, Anthony Keegan of Commonwealth Utilities, Adam Kimmel, Nikki Kule of Kule, Kimberly McDonald, Rebecca Minkoff, Bibhu Mohapatra, Juan Carlos Obando, Monique Péan, Monica Rich Kosann, Pamella Roland, Robert Rodriguez, L'Wren Scott, Shelly Steffee, and Sophie Theallet, who just moved into a new office space.

Juan Carlos Obando Designs First Resort Collection

Los Angeles-based, Columbian-born designer Juan Carlos Obando presented a collection of ten resort looks this week to international buyers and press. The resort line, which will sell exclusively at Barneys in the U.S., consists of “pieces that together look very formal, but taken apart can be much more casual,” explained Obando. Building on his theme of distressed, worked-over fabrics (we especially loved the dirt-covered, dust bowl fabrications from his spring 2010 collection), Obando's luxe fabrics are treated with dyes, sanding, and washing. The resort collection has the kind of transformative powers one needs to see in pieces priced $900 to $3,100.

Runway Report: Juan Carlos Obando Spring 2010

Juan Carlos Obando loves a well-themed fashion show, and for his spring 2010 collection it seems the California-bsed designer was inspired by all things American West.

Models traversed studio four at Milk to the music from "The Magnificent Seven," looking like each had taken a roll down a dusty hillside before making her exit. True to form, Obando showed multiple variations of his theme - in this case smudged peplum jackets paired with slit-to-there skirts, waxed trousers, and a stunning knee length coat in rich eggplant.

Obando's new frontier continued in a second section of beautifully pleated dresses with ombre color palettes in terra cotta earth tones and vibrant midnight and turquoise blues.

He's given his girl more freedom this spring, as the collection is less ladylike more versatile than in season's past. Although the dirt stains won't appear on the clothing in stores this spring (it was only makeup), we quite liked the look of Manolo Blahnik's muddy pink suede stiletto.

Fall 2009 Fashion Week: Still Necessary, Just with Less of Everything

>> Designers may be pulling their belt tighter this Fashion Week, but hardly any are pulling out of the rat race altogether - the attention is too valuable. "You kill a thousand birds with one stone, because you get that many people there in an hour and you're getting one message across to them," says Scott Sternberg of Boy and Band of Outsiders. "They're writers and photographers and culturally indulgent people with loud mouths."

Instead, designers are saving by hosting presentations instead of runway shows (Monique Lhuillier, Temperley London, and Carmen Marc Valvo), inviting fewer guests (Marc Jacobs and DKNY, who's slicing her usual 1,000 down to 400), sending email invites instead of by mail (nearly everyone), or showing fewer looks to save on fabric and sample-making costs.

Jason Wu, Alexander Wang, Vena Cava Among 2008 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Nominees

>> The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund has determined its ten finalists for 2008.

Last year's winner, Rogan Gregory, was announced in November and received a monetary award of $200,000, with two runners-up reiving $50,000 each. For the past couple of years, the nominees have worked with Gap as part of a limited Gap Design Edition collaboration to gain more exposure, and many have also gone on to work with Target in limited-edition runs.
