>> Henry Holland first burst onto the scene back in 2006 when he got Giles Deacon to wear a t-shirt that read "UHU Gareth Pugh" for his runway bow — Gareth reciprocated soon after by wearing Holland's "Get Your Freak on Giles Deacon" shirt.
In the time since, fashion iconograhy has proliferated on t-shirts. Deer Dana launched tees with cartoon renderings of Hamish Bowles, Andre Leon Talley, and Agyness Deyn, and just last week, Diane von Furstenberg graphic designer Chris Sauve launched the "Save Anna" graphic campaign — "take this graphic and make a t-shirt" — after rumors of Wintour's demise.
Holland is finally switching it up from the trademark slogan tees; He's done cartoon renderings of nude John Galliano, Donatella Versace, Karl Lagerfeld, and of course close friend Agyness Deyn — with flowers appropriately placed, Karl's a Chanel camellia. There are more designers involved — Luella Bartley included — and all approved Henry's graphics, which are going on t-shirts, to arrive in stores next year. *image: source
>> Sasha Pivovarova — the original Sasha Fierce — may no longer be on contract with Prada, but that doesn't mean they don't still have her best interests in mind. The model, who had her first ever photography and drawing exhibition in New York during February's Fashion Week, is now in the process of working on a book of her nymph drawings with Prada's backing, she revealed when stopping by an art opening in Paris last night. But that's not all that's keeping her busy in Paris — she just recently shot the John Galliano campaign for Spring 2009. *image: source, source
>> For its fifth anniversary, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund went with the obvious choice, naming Alexander Wang the recipient of $200,000 plus a year of mentoring last night. Vogue favorite Vena Cava and a less expected choice, milliner Albertus Swanepoel of Albertus Quartus, were both named runners-up and will receive $50,000 plus a business mentor. The night's keynote speaker, John Galliano, and his date Charlize Theron were seated next to Anna Wintour and presented the top honors to a teary-eyed Alexander Wang, who said his thank yous onstage as John Galliano rubbed his arm in comfort.
Top hats seemed to be the order of the evening — Julie Gilhart and John Galliano each sported one, the latter with a daisy chain, and Agyness Deyn had on a squished version — while carrot pants and one-shouldered dresses also received numerous nods. Plenty of models are already back in town from the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show: Anne Vyalitsyna came with Costello Tagliapietra, Maryna Linchuk with Rag & Bone, Doutzen Kroes with Irene Neuwirth, and Arlenis Sosa Pena with Rogan. *image: source, source
>> Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's book,Influence, doesn't come out until Thursday, but The Cut got an advanced copy — an advanced look at all the interviews the Olsens conducted for the book — among their subjects are favorite designers Francisco Costa, Diane von Furstenberg, John Galliano, Christian Louboutin, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, Giambattista Valli, favorite photographers Peter Lindbergh and Terry Richardson, plus pictures by Rankin of the interviewees and their work.
KL: [N]owadays you start to model because you're young. Now the girls are sixteen, seventeen, fifteen, and Russian. They are like from another planet. AO: They can look very bizarre! KL: I hate all these tall women. They are all giants! MKO: If only I were a little taller — that would make me happy! KL: You are one meter fifty-one. You are taller than that? AO: We're five feet and one inch. KL: Oh, I thought my office told me that you were four-foot eight or something. Not that it matters. What you need is a face. If you have a face you don't need height or a voice. Models know this; that's why the good ones don't need to talk much. KL: I like to work with models for a long time. Sometimes the girls change, but some girls I work with for years and years.
>> Suzy Menkes's 1.7 million-plus words during her twenty years as fashion editor at the International Herald Tribunewere commemorated on Saturday with a special video. "You've made me cry . . . To earn a glowing review from you is the holy grail of fashion," John Galliano declared. Anna Wintour, Franca Sozzani, Karl Lagerfeld and then some all honored the Samurai, Olivier Theyskens with his words as much as his pompadour hairdo — which apparently got a big laugh. Even Marc Jacobs chimed in — but only with kind words, and no sticking out of the tongue. But let's be honest — in the middle of show season, who would dally with such an influential reviewer?
>> INSIDER WIRE —For all the designer upheaval that is continually happening elsewhere, there is one designer that won't be going anywhere anytime soon. John Galliano has just inked a "long-term extension" of his contract at Dior, with only one new change — Dior will be integrating Galliano's eponymous brand, with emphasis on a close partnership. [WWD]
>> Transparency is still the word, in John Galliano's mind. The beanie-sporting designerhad Lisa Fonssagrives, wife to Irving Penn and oft-credited as the first supermodel, in mind when producing his typical voluminous dresses, but with layers of light chiffon, rather than the heavier, stiffer fabrics Christian Dior couture has boasted in recent seasons.
Frequent collaborator Stephen Jones, meanwhile, looked to Eduardo Garcia Benito, famous for his '20s Vogue cover illustrations of women in cloches, when creating the accompanying skull cap-cum-cloches.
Peplums were aplenty and Galliano couldn't help himself, sneaking a little leopard print into the bunch. But the unifying thought with this collection seems to be: What will we see on newfound Dior client Carla Bruni-Sarkozy first? *image: source, source
