Finally, the online sector is getting a piece of the action. A selection of her limited-edition bags, which retail for $295 to $795, just hit Barneys online. “I really enjoy making bags,” Mayle recently told Vogue. “It’s the way my mind works; I try to create a whole mini universe.”

Jane Mayle's Fall 2010 Capsule Collection, Kamikaze of Love, Debuts Today

>> After disappearing in February 2009, Jane Mayle is back with a Fall 2010 capsule collection of dresses, coats, tops, handbags, called Kamikaze Full of Love, plus shoes and boots in collaboration with Sigerson Morrison (sketch at left), all launching today at the Sigerson Morrison Laboratory Boutique on 19 East 71st Street in Manhattan. The line will be available through Oct. 14, and new goods are expected to arrive at the store each week.

Mayle describes the line as "the result [of] only making things because I feel like it rather than being constrained to do so. The pop-up is titled 'Kamikaze of Love' for a reason. The pieces are only those that I want to wear now and don't necessarily work together as a "collection" because I didn't feel the regular dictates of the industry to flesh out a design story for the purposes of things hanging together in any other place than my own closet. This really is my wardrobe of right now."

So does this indicate a return to fashion? "There's so much about this pop-up approach that I find very appealing. It feels very light which is definitely the most appropriate incarnation of Mayle for now. I'm enjoying not knowing if there will be more Mayle in a fashion context and being open to what might come next or what I'm moved to put out there - I'm looking forward to surprising myself. I feel so lucky that I now get to respond to my mood of the moment and create something from that and then move on to another medium or collaboration. That fluidity and variety is bliss! There's a floating sort of ease to the pieces which I'm really enjoying and there were just fabrics I couldn't resist and got me on the subway and up into the garment district again . . . they made me do it!"

Mayle To Follow Jovovich-Hawk's Fate

>> And another one bites the dust. Just shortly after Milla Jovovich laid Jovovich-Hawk to rest, Jane Mayle has decided after ten years to call it quits on her contemporary line Mayle.

The holiday-resort collection will be Mayle's last. The closure is not for financial reasons — the designer told WWD her business is healthier than ever — but rather due to the accelerating fashion calendar:

The customer gets tired before the collections even hit stores . . . That mystery and remoteness and insouciance have disappeared from fashion in order to accelerate the product. I feel I have just become another cog in that machinery.

Mayle wouldn't disclose what she has in the works next, but hasn't ruled out fashion altogether.

Bill Blass Has a New Designer: Jeffrey Monteiro

>> As previously suggested, relative newcomer Jeffrey Monteiro, an alum of Jane Mayle and Derek Lam with a year-old collection of his own under his belt, is the newest design director at Bill Blass. He was chosen from among 100 applicants and starts in January with the intention of bringing a high-end Bill Blass collection back to stores next Winter.

New brand owners Bill Blass Group let the label lay fallow since purchasing it last year, allowing half of the 20 licensees to expire. According to Group president Scott Patti, “There was not a lot of business left out there, so it kind of cleaned itself up.”

Patti noted that Monteiro, the fifth designer to take over the label since Bill Blass retired in 1999, was chosen because “he’s very low-key and realistic. Bill Blass designed real clothes, and that’s what Jeffrey does as well.” Monteiro, for his part, was mum on what he has in mind for the brand, only telling the New York Times that his idea customer is a young professional woman and that he was thinking about colors based on the paintings of Clyfford Still. “The challenge is to take something that has such weight and nostalgia and make it modern and fresh."
