Are the Current Pressures of the Fashion Industry Causing Designers to Crash? Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs, and More Speak

>> Between Alexander McQueen committing suicide last year, John Galliano's drunken, anti-Semitic outburst, and Christophe Decarnin being sidelined for depression treatments, many are starting to wonder if the fashion industry and its current pressures - particularly the demand for more and more collections, released faster and faster - are to blame for designers spinning out of control. Karl Lagerfeld, Michael Kors, and more address the issue:

Karl Lagerfeld: “I see designing, running a company, like a high-level athletic activity. I don’t want to hear anything about the fragility or any of those things. If an athlete is too fragile to run, he cannot run. And this is exactly the same. You don’t accept this kind of business if you’re too much of an artist. I believe in discipline, so I’m not the right person to cry about weakness and things like this, but maybe I’m not human.”

Marc Jacobs: “You don’t think bank tellers have problems? You don’t think people in the middle of the suburbs have problems? Blaming is such a complete waste. I mean, it’s so pointless. To say, you know, my mother was absent and therefore I ran amok, it’s ridiculous. It’s a self-destructive nature, it’s a mental, physical and a kind of spiritual malady . . . people who are happy and healthy and spiritually well don’t do things to hurt themselves.”

Yves Saint Laurent's longtime business partner Pierre Berge: “I have a lot more sympathy for people who have to take the train to work every day. What a load of nonsense! No, no, no. Designers are artisans who are extremely privileged to have a poetic profession. They are not artists. We have to stop saying that they are.”

Marc Jacobs's longtime business partner Robert Duffy: “You cannot blame the industry. The majority of actors are not drug addicts, the majority of designers are not drug addicts.”

Theory founder Andrew Rosen: “I don’t see fashion as an industry being ahead of the world in terms of this issue. It’s a devastating and unfortunate condition that happens in every walk of life. It doesn’t make it better or OK, it’s a devastating illness to all those around it. Drug addiction, and addiction in general, is unfortunately part of society today. Maybe because we’re so close to our industry, we feel it more. Whenever it happens, it’s horrible.”

Michael Kors: "No question . . . I mean, I forget what season I’m in sometimes. I think every designer in today’s world, I don’t care whether you’re a designer who makes clothes that are phantasmagorical or very pragmatic, you have to figure out something that can ground you and bring you back. Whatever it is, if you go to the gym too much or you travel too much, you’ve got to have time to escape. I always tell everyone the crazy conversation I’ve had forever with actors, if they do two films in a row, and they’ve lived these characters and they’re on the set away from their friends and family, but then they take a year off. What are designers supposed to say? 'I’m tired. I’m not doing fall. Wear last year’s clothes, and maybe get some new nail polish.' It’s endless."

Photographer Mert Alas: “I’m the kind of person that I live under pressure, but I enjoy the pressure, so it very much relates to your own personality. Of course we’re all under pressure. The bus driver is under pressure. But, you know, it’s how you come out of it. If you can make good fun with it, pressure can be enjoyable.”

New York Times's Cathy Horyn: "For designers already at big houses, the pressures must reach absurd levels . . . Many people in professional and creative fields are under intense pressure, but for designers that pressure is manifested on the runway. The problem goes beyond having to produce multiple collections a year; it’s the nearly brutalizing feeling that something new and relevant must be communicated each season."

Co-President of PR firm KCD Ed Filipowski: “As a publicist, I have also taken on many times the role of ‘fashion therapist’ to my clients. Globalization, digitalization - the speed and scope of our work - has added a tremendous amount of pressure not only to the creative field but everyone in this industry. I would venture to say we are all doing at least twice as much work twice as fast as we were five years ago.”

Marc Jacobs To Hold After Party at Bookmarc

>> Last year, Marc Jacobs took over The Maritime Hotel's Hiro Ballroom and had Lady Gaga hammer out hits on a bejeweled piano for his afterparty. This year, his fete will be a more literary affair - in setting, at least. On Monday evening, Marc will have an intimate party at his newest store, book haven Bookmarc, on Bleecker Street - and a simultaneous private bash across the street at his Marc by Marc Jacobs stores in honor of the photographer Brian Bowen Smith, who photographed a series of more than 150 Jacobs employee portraits for a new book, The Men and Women of Marc Jacobs. (Smith previously photographed celebrities in the nude for Jacobs's charity push back in 2006. ) Even though the Bookmarc bash is slated to end at 10:30 pm, we hear the Boom Boom Room will be open for Jacobs and co. afterwards.

Paul Rowland Speaks about His Move to Ford, How He Plans to Reinvigorate the Agency

Five months later, he finally speaks publically to T about the switch: “I’ve always had this obsession with Ford, this curiosity. I love the name, I love the brand. I’ve always had this thing in the back of my mind where I thought it would be cool to go and put my own touch on it. I thought it would be cool to do what [Marc Jacobs] did, [reinvigorating Louis Vuitton] but within a modeling agency. That was where I got the idea. I just thought it would be amazing if I could breathe some new life into the image of Ford.”

Gareth Pugh confirmed that he will be showing a video directed by Ruth Hogben on Sept. 13 to "set the mood for [his] catwalk show that will take place as usual in Paris." After the private showing, he'll screen the short film in public nearby - get your name on the guest list via MAC's Facebook page. [Style File]
Temperley London is taking their interactive Spring 2010 multimedia presentation on the road for the second time, starting in New York Sept. 15 before evolving in format for London Fashion Week and then again in Paris, where it will become an exhibit. The film aspect, plus stills and a behind-the-scenes cut will be readily available online on Temperley's new website.

Costume Institute Gala Designers and Their Guests: Who's Coming, Who's Not

>> This year's supermodel-centric Costume Institute Gala is coming up soon - Monday - and it's shaping up to be the toned-down affair that was expected: a number of designers who usually attend are not, tables are not selling as well as in the past, and there are even rumors that Vogue is having model attendees pay an entry fee to the tune of $7,500.

Versace has decided to join Burberry, Roberto Cavalli, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, and Alberta Ferretti in the not-buying-a-table camp, and Celine and Fendi are not actively participating in the event at all. Domenico Dolce, Stefano Gabbana, Christopher Bailey, L'Wren Scott, Suphie Buhai and Lisa Mayock of Vena Cava, Erin Fetherston are all said to be forgoing the festivities, and Christy Turlington, despite this year's theme, turned down her invitation as she will be out of the country.

As for those who are attending, sponsor Marc Jacobs has his fiance Lorenzo Martone "semi-hosting" a table of his own, and co-host Kate Moss is supposedly after Stephen Jones for a specially-crafted turban decorated with Shaun Leane brooch for the occasion, and is rumored to have asked Jacobs for a Veronica Lake-inspired gown. Meanwhile, Chanel Iman left Vogue Monday with her gown of choice in hand, hinting "I smell a JLO red carpet moment. Watch out JLO!!" and Lauren Santo Domingo is apparently choosing between blue and green sequins.

Alaia Pulls Dresses From Costume Institute Gala After Exhibit Snub

>> Anna Wintour received criticism yesterday for co-opting the Met's reputation for her own means, but new Costume Institute Gala-related developments snuff out those complaints in a second. Seven models - including Naomi Campbell, Stephanie Seymour, and Linda Evangelista - were to wear Azzedine Alaia creations to the gala tonight, but the designer has asked them not to wear the dresses because his work, though strongly tied to a number of the supermodels' careers, has no place in this year's exhibit, save for one photograph.

As a result, Naomi Campbell - as rumored - plus some of the other (unnamed) models will not be attending tonight in a gesture to the designer. A spokeswoman for Campbell confirmed this afternoon: “As Naomi has been the muse of Azzedine Alaia for 23 years, she feels she doesn’t want to attend unless she can represent his work.” No word on whether Seymour and Evangelista will do the same.

Marc Jacobs Sets a Wedding Date, Reveals More Costume Institute Gala Guests

>> As Marc Jacobs gears up for sponsor duties on Monday's Costume Institute Gala, he's got another big event on his mind: his wedding. He got engaged to fiance Lorenzo Martone last month, and the two are already planning what is sure to be a big bash in Provincetown, Massachusetts, according to Martone - one of their favorite vacation spots. "Yes, [the wedding is happening] in the summer - in June, even before summer! And then [we'll have] a party in December in St. Barths."

Just last week, Lorenzo revealed that he was the one who proposed, and he bought their pink-gold triple band rings at Boucheron, Marc's favorite jeweler, in Paris during Fashion Week. “I was in Paris for Fashion Week for the Vuitton show, so I had a little planning beforehand to do that." He brought them back to New York, where he surprised Marc with them during dinner at the Mercer Hotel.

But it's not all about the wedding just yet; Jacobs fleshed out his Costume Insitute Gala guest list further - we've already heard co-host Kate Moss and Kerry Washington, and last night he added: "Madonna . . . Victoria Beckham . . . I'm trying to think, now I can't remember! Anne Hathaway . . . Winona [Ryder] . . . Rachel Feinstein, John Currin . . . and Rihanna!"
