>> Everyone knows this girl: The girl who can pile on the most random assortment of pieces and still manage to look amazingly cool. A vintage dress, cowboy boots, an odd little cap - somehow, it works. It was this kind of irreverent spirit that Jen Kao riffed on for Fall 2012. The designer tapped a seemingly endless supply of influences - the Far East, Western, Military, a bit of '20s - and strung it all together with leather, crochet, plaid, dip-dyed lace, and fringe. It made for an intriguing assortment and - at its most successful - managed to capture that elusive, freewheeling spirit with utter ease.

A First Look at the Undercover Uniqlo Collection

>> Campaign images of Jun Takahashi's Undercover Uniqlo collection have been released. Via the capsule's newly live website, the four campaign images depict an attractive family of six dressed head to toe in comfy-chic weekend classics: there are stripey-sleeve tops, khaki jackets, cardigan sweaters, and printed pants - in short, just the kind of clothing one would wear to engage in wholesome family fun. "Clothing for the families of today," the retailer explains. "It is the unity of Uniqlo's high-quality basic clothing, and the Undercover line of street-influences, high-end fashion. It represents the modern family style, and seeks to inspire the world from Tokyo." The 105-piece collection - made up of 34 items for women, 43 items for men, and 32 items for children and babies - hits stores March 16 and is priced from around $11 to $105. [Shophound, Racked]

Was Jean Paul Gaultier's Amy Winehouse-Inspired Couture Show in Poor Taste?

>> Amy Winehouse's father seems to think so. Mitch Winehouse has spoken out against Jean Paul Gaultier, saying the designer's recent couture collection - which featured models styled in the late singer's trademark beehives and eyeliner - was "an insult" and in very poor taste.

"The family was upset to see those pictures, they were a total shock," Winehouse told The Sun. "We're still grieving for her loss, and we've had a difficult week with the six-month anniversary of Amy's death. To see her image lifted wholesale to sell clothes was a wrench we were not expecting or consulted on. We're proud of her influence on fashion, but find black veils on models smoking cigarettes with a barbershop quartet singing her music in bad taste. It portrays a view of Amy when she was not at her best, and glamorizes some of the more upsetting times in her life. That's upsetting for her family."

Gaultier, who has not yet responded to the family's criticism, said earlier in the week that the collection was meant as tribute. "It is very joyous,” the designer told the New York Times after the show. "To me the scandal is that no fashion magazine did an Amy Winehouse cover. She was so exceptional in her style; how she held her body; the way she dressed, mixing pieces from different decades."

>> Sarah Burton culled influence from the Victorian era - particularly, the ultra-full circle skirts of that period - for Pre-Fall 2012. Also worked into the mix: the nipped-in waists of '50s couture, lush fabric motifs inspired by Elizabethan art, and exaggerated silhouettes that hint at the work of Charles James. "I've raised the waist, kept the peplum, but moved away from the pencil skirt," Burton explained.

A Look at the Upcoming Yves Saint Laurent Exhibit

>>This Spring, the Denver Art Museum pays tribute to the legendary designer with Yves Saint Laurent, The Retrospective. Spanning over 40 years, the exhibit offers a complete look at Saint Laurent's career, style, and historical influence - starting with his first collection at Dior in 1958, all the way up to his final runway presentation in 2002. With over 200 haute couture pieces on display - including the very first Le Smoking - as well as photos, drawings, and films, the exhibit also examines YSL's relationship with other artists, his famous patrons - including Princess Grace of Monaco, Nan Kempner, Catherine Deneuve, and Diana Vreeland - and the exotic travels that inspired many of his collections. >> Peter Som culled influence from '70s film The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and Wallis Simpson for Pre-Fall 2012, resulting in an assortment of prim separates steeped in cheeky Surrealist edge. Lean trousers, mod jackets, crewneck sweaters, and pleated frocks - Som staples - were done up in leather, lipstick-brights, houndstooth, and two knockout prints: a large-scale floating jewel pattern and a sunset floral ocelot. "It's a ladylike approach to dressing, but a little undone," Som explained.

Giorgio Armani Denies Lady Gaga Influenced His Spring 2011 Couture Collection

>> In the wake of yesterday's Armani Prive show, Derek Blasberg Tweeted: "Armani couture has gone all Sci-Fi on me. Pierre Cardin-esque shapes, iridescent fabrics and flying saucers hats. Is that the Gaga effect?" Cathy Horyn Tweeted similarly: "Did Lady Gaga influence Armani's super-future lines and curves in startling collection of synthetic/metallic shine and enamel-like color?" And Vogue's Mark Holgate wrote, "Clearly, Armani is gaga for Gaga. How else does one explain that shiny molded techno-fabric that looked like it was specially created for Tron?" But despite all of those conclusions and the fact that Gaga and Armani have a multimillion dollar partnership, when Horyn approached Armani about it, she writes: "Afterward I asked him if he had been at all influenced by Lady Gaga, for whom he has made some clothes, and he shook his head firmly.
