>> Gareth Pugh doesn't currently participate in couture, but he recently took a crack at a showstopping bridal gown - for his best friend and longtime collaborator, stylist Katie Shillingford, who was married last Friday. Shillingford wed Alex Dromgoole in the 1930s Art Deco-style Eltham Palace of Greenwich, England, wearing a custom pale grey slashed chiffon Pugh dress, complete with a trail that hung from her shoulders and a veil created by Stephen Jones.

Shillingford's bridesmaids - including Dazed & Confused and Another's Karen Langley, who helped design the wedding cake - wore black striped knitted dresses by Craig Lawrence, and Shillingford changed in a Fall 2011 Gareth Pugh gold dress and Fall 2011 Miu Miu shoes for the reception.

Gareth Pugh Ready To Make Money, Launching Full Makeup Line with MAC

>> Gareth Pugh has been edging towards the more commercial for a few seasons now, but now it sounds like he's fully come to terms with the idea. "If you as a fashion designer, you do shows but you don’t sell, it kind of becomes a bit of a vanity project," he recently said. "You know that’s kind of how I started and that’s how I got going but kind of a more mature point of view it needs to obviously translate into things that sell and that’s a new challenge for me. The two need each other, business and creativity. It’s a weird mix but you need to have that balance, I think, now. Or I need to have that balance now, so I’ve made my peace with that."

Peace made, Pugh is putting the idea into motion: MAC, which he has collaborated with in the past on runway makeup, just announced that it will globally launch a full-scale makeup collection with the designer come November. The range is expected to include multiple color products and accessories in "special packaging."

Gareth Pugh Didn't Sell A Piece of Clothing Until His Fourth or Fifth Show

>> Gareth Pugh has come a long way from living in a squat house in 2005. The road hasn't been an easy one, however, he tells Vice in its new Style Issue: "We didn’t sell anything from the poodle or gimp shows - nothing until the fourth or fifth show. My first show was such a last-minute thing. I was only really thinking about the show and not selling stuff afterward. But once you start showing, you’re on the treadmill and have to carry on." Even a couple of years ago, he says, "There was a point, right before a show, when I barely had enough money to get my team over to Paris."

But now, Pugh is definitely starting to consider the financial aspect of his brand (and perhaps explains why he leans toward short films in place of runway shows): "At the moment I feel very much between a rock and a hard place. People expect an amazing show, but in order to do that in Paris you have to sell a lot of clothes, which maybe means people have to be able to imagine the clothes on hangers."

Despite Many Rumors Otherwise, Gareth Pugh Says He's Never Been Asked to Head Up Another Design House

>> In the past year, Gareth Pugh has been rumored to be taking jobs at both Alexander McQueen and Thierry Mugler. Obviously neither of those worked out - Sarah Burton is now in place at McQueen, and Nicola Formichetti has filled in at Mugler - but when it comes to an opportunity at another label, Pugh says: "I would never say never. I have never been asked so I wouldn't know whether I would say yes or no. If I did do it, it would certainly have to be the right thing. I'm not holding out for that. It would obviously change the way I work and the way I live and I'm quite happy with what I do at the moment so it would have to be a very good offer."

He continued: "There have been so many rumours. How many jobs can one person do? To be honest with you, I thought that the McQueen thing was a little in bad taste with the circumstances surrounding that. Other than the inappropriateness of it, it is vaguely flattering but obviously the inappropriateness did rather take over."

And it sounds like he didn't necessarily feel qualified for the McQueen job: "I met [McQueen] a couple of times but I didn't know him as a person, I never worked with him. They obviously have a very specific way of working there - and Sarah Burton obviously worked with him for a long, long time and to be given that role and responsibility is a tough one. To step into those shoes, I'm not jealous of that situation at all, I don't envy her position. It's flattering but I think a little ill-founded."

Inspired by religious iconography and the city of Florence, the collection created specifically for the occasion incorporates color - the first time ever for Pugh - like gold and blue. Gareth Pugh to Show Next Womenswear Collection in Italy - for Pitti W

>> Next January, Gareth Pugh will show for the first time in Italy - as part of the womenswear trade show Pitti W in Florence, which runs Jan. 11 through 14.

Pugh will create a collection specifically for the event - his spokesman said he recently visited Florence and had his eye on a central venue but hadn't yet decided on whether he'll show in runway or video format. This is a one-time thing for the designer - Pugh follows in the footsteps of Haider Ackermann, Giles Deacon, Diane von Furstenberg, Giambattista Valli, and Proenza Schouler and will continue to show during Paris Fashion Week.

Lapo Cianchi, communications and events director of Pitti Immagine, said Pugh's choice to stage a video presentation during Paris Fashion Week in October was part of the reason he was chosen to participate: "We have followed his work in London and Paris, seen his style evolve - from the Gothic atmospheres of the early days to today’s decidedly flamboyant effects - as well as the way he presents his collections: the video screened at the last Paris Fashion Week brought new energy to the discussion on the use of multimedia technologies in fashion. So we had all the right reasons for inviting Gareth Pugh to Florence and Pitti, where there is plenty of space for fashion experiments which can dialogue with the city’s unique historical and artistic venues. We are very happy that Gareth Pugh responded to our invitation with such enthusiasm."
