Snapshots from the Shows - Fenton Spring 2012

>> Earlier this afternoon, in a private room at the Four Seasons Restaurant in midtown Manhattan, Fenton designer Dana Lorenz presented her Spring 2012 collection on seven stoic models dressed head-to-toe in ivory. "Chloe and Valentino," Lorenz said of the models' monochrome ensembles, while guests such as Mark Holgate and Meredith Melling Burke snapped pictures and chatted jovially. It was a relaxed yet refined atmosphere, one that was perfectly in-step with the pastel-dotted collection. Inspired by Miami's Art Deco architecture, this was the softer side of Fenton - fringed duster necklaces were accented with crystals and pearls, and silk chokers were strung with dyed turquoise and moonstone. "It’s very playful,” the designer explained. “I usually go for a dark strength in my work, but Spring is about color and to me, these pastels still feel powerful.”

First Look: Fenton's Dana Lorenz Debuts First Resort Collection

For her first-ever resort collection, Fenton jewelry designer Dana Lorenz was inspired by a necklace she created for her recent CFDA Swarovski award nomination. “I wanted to explore the clash of traditional jewelry ideas with something nontraditional, like speaker wire,” said Lorenz, who used crystal, pearls, and the aforementioned speaker wire for the Swarovski project as well as her 25-piece resort lineup. “I see resort as a good time to do something different. It’ll be a good way for me to take risks and give the customer something newer and fresher." New and fresh styles for Fenton include thin cables tied into neat little bows, wrapped around oversize crystals, or made into tassels that drip from necklaces and earrings. Spring Shopping: Fenton/Fallon For J.Crew

Lucky for us, J.Crew creative director Jenna Lyons and Fenton/Fallon designer Dana Lorenz became fast friends after meeting during a dinner party and quickly had the idea of a jewelry collaboration. The seven-piece lineup, called Fenton/Fallon for J.Crew, is made up of Lorenz's signature chunky metals and ranges in price from $95-$295. "I didn't water my design down at all," the jewelry designer recently told Harper's Bazaar. "I included all of my iconic Fenton/Fallon things, like the pyramid studs, spikes, and jumbled chains." Having bought the bracelet above in J.Crew's Soho store yesterday, we can attest to that.

Fall 2009 Fashion Week: Baubles, Baubles, Baubles

>> Fall 2009 is jewelry's time to shine, judging by all of the collaborations debuting during Fashion Week. Besides Alexander Wang working with Paris Kain of AbraxasRex on "industrial," "animalistic" pieces, Bensoni commissioned Bing Bang's Anna Sheffield to do candy heart necklaces with pyramid pendants, Jason Wu enlisted Philip Crangi to add a "tough element" to his collection, Gilles Mendel and Subversive's Justin Giunta teamed up for chains and jewels to will appear on and worked into the J.Mendel collection, Eddie Borgo channeled his triangle obsession for Jen Kao, producing a sharp set of baubles - and he also working with Joseph Altuzarra. Not to mention a variety of other partners in jeweldom: Hervé Van der Straeten and Ruffian, Thakoon and Fenton's Dana Lorenz, DanniJo and Trovata, Roxanne Assouline and Brian Reyes . . .

Needless to say, the bijoux will be aplenty this season - especially because those partnerships are a good way to for jewelry designers get pieces out there without spending money - "You'll see a lot of collaborations going on with designers - like Irene Neuwirth is doing jewelry for Richard Chai - so you can see the talent at the same time," says CFDA executive director Steven Kolb.

Dana Lorenz Launches Fenton/Fallon for J.Crew Collection

>> J.Crew stocks a heritage brand here and there, but it's not often that an up-and-coming designer is asked to collaborate with the brand. Not so for Fenton/Fallon's Dana Lorenz, of whom J.Crew creative director Jenna Lyons is a major fan: “We met at a dinner party at Maria Cornejo’s house. We were sitting next to each other and talking, and she mentioned that she was a jewelry designer . . . I asked her what jewelry she designed and she said Fenton/Fallon. I was like, Jesus Christ - I had a stack of papers on my desk of pictures of her necklaces and I had been trying to find them. None of them had names on her website, so I just printed them all out and would call Bergdorf and say, ‘Do you have this?’ They were like, ‘I don’t know, lady, you have to come up.’"

Thus, the Fenton/Fallon for J.Crew collection, "a mash-up" of her Fenton and Fallon brands, according to Lorenz, which runs $95 to $295, was born - and is now in stores.

>> Fenton/Fallon's Dana Lorenz Doesn't Go to Parties to Advertise Herself -Monday night at the CFDA Awards, Fenton/Fallon's Dana Lorenz said of her ensemble: "I wouldn't call it a gown because it's too grungy to be a gown. I don't think it's necessary to be all Nicole Kidman about this." While other designers were campaigning for a win, Lorenz took a laidback attitude to being nominated: "It's like in golf - sorry, my dad's a golfer! -you're supposed to just keep your head down. I don't have a FameGame profile. I don't go to parties to advertise that way. I'm the type of person who would always rather be at home watching Daria, but I'm really enjoying this." [NY Observer]

>> CFDA Pairs with Magazine That Isn't Vogue for First Time -Harper's Bazaar and the CFDA are joining (marking the first time the CFDA has paired with a magazine other than Vogue) for the Accessories Bazaar; the initiative showcases up-and-coming accessories designers in an exhibit which coincides with New York Fashion Week and will be located nearby Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall. The Bazaar, which kicks off with a cocktail party Sept. 13 and will be open to Fashion Week attendees for the next two days, will feature the Spring 2011 collections of 18 jewelers, milliners, footwear, handbag and small leather goods designers, among them Alexis Bittar, Philip Crangi, Albertus Swanepoel, Alejandro Ingelmo, Fenton/Fallon's Dana Lorenz, Pamela Love and Dean Harris, in a gallery-like setting (rendering, above left).

2010 CFDA Award Nominees Announced

>> At the CFDA meeting earlier today, the board voted overwhelmingly to re-elect Diane von Furstenberg for a third, two-year term as president of the organization. Von Furstenberg, whose term would have originally come to an end after this year, will now serve until Dec. 31, 2012: “[The board] unanimously asked me to stay another two years and I said yes. I am happy that they love me and I love them. There is so much more to do and we’re doing it.”

And this evening, von Furstenberg held a cocktail gathering for the 2010 CFDA Award nominations announcements at her studio. She noted that the awards ceremony on June 7 at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall will host a special tribute for Alexander McQueen, and the Popular Vote category, which is open to public voting and which Ralph Lauren won last year, will be back again this year, with voting starting April 1.
