>> Before jetting off to Milan, London fashion's finest gathered for a dinner last night at the Double Club, in honor of Another Magazine's newest issue featuring Tilda Swinton. Kate Moss, freshly returned from a safari in South Africa, made her first and only London Fashion Week appearance, dropping in with Jamie Hince for Jefferson Hack's Congolese family-style dinner. Lily Cole, who sat front row at Vivienne Westwood Red Label earlier this week and then walked in the Qasimi show before heading back to Cambridge, popped back into town for the party, where Peaches performed her Karoake favorites while Kate, Tilda Swinton, and Daphne Guiness all sang along.

Josh Goot Switches Up Venue, But Not Signature Looks for Fall 2009

>> For the second season in a row, Australian minimalist Josh Goot took his game to London Fashion Week. The designer had to change venues at the last minute, losing 100 seats and causing a mad dash for the diminished number of front row seats, but all the chaos is a sign of one positive thing - there was a good turnout. Goot stayed true to his predilection for black, white, pastels, and marbled prints cut in a number of body-conscious silhouettes; colorblocking played a large part in the Fall 2009 collection, as did knits, but the eye-catching pieces involved curvy lines and digital prints.

A Different Type of Christopher Kane for Fall 2009

>> Easily the hottest ticket at London Fashion Week, Christopher Kane brought out the masses earlier today. But those expecting a colorful outings like seasons past are in for a surprise - as guests were served carrot and coriander soup, Kane sent out pieces in largely black and neutral shades - Hilary Alexander likened the geometric patterns to the stroke of a black marker on a white sheet of paper. Men's brogues covered feet - that or crushed purple and gold velvet high heels that models were warned about before the show - apparently the heels were fragile. All in all, definitely a toned down version of classics compared to what Kane has done in the past, but still impressive enough to keep the critics happy; as Suzy Menkes put it, "Everything was subtle, sensitive and just right, showing Kane as a fast-growing talent."

London Fashion Week to Overlap with New York Fashion Week

>> Despite the emergency meetings held during London Fashion Week to hash out the issue, it sounds like neither Milan or New York officials would budge on their February 2009 Fashion Week dates.

Since London was left with only four days in February between the time Fall 2009 New York Fashion Week ends and Milan Fashion Week begins, the British Fashion Council has decided that one day of London Fashion Week - Feb. 20 - will overlap with New York Fashion Week. According to Hilary Riva, chief executive of the BFC, the decision was made because "the majority of designers showing at London Fashion Week" agreed with the measures being taken.

So much for the fashion cities working together . . .

Rest Easy: London Fashion Week Is Still Okay

>> Thank goodness, in this time of economic woe, the four fashion capitals could find it within themselves to reach a "peace agreement."

London Fashion Week - which over the years had brought us Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, and Gareth Pugh - was in danger of being squeezed into three days. But no more - after a "summit" today in London, New York will move its Fashion Week a week back like it wanted (to avoid the Labor Day holiday), and London Fashion Week will have five days rather than the six it currently has . . . starting in September 2009. As for the more imminent February 2009 shows, those seem to be under less contention, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see how the "finer details of the deal" fall into place.

Among those shows with the highest diversity: Oscar de la Renta, Victoria Beckham, Tracy Reese, Sophie Theallet; those using no models of color included: Julian Louie, Koi Suwannagate, Temperley London, and Vera Wang Lavender Label. Spills and Thrills at the 2009 British Fashion Awards

>> Last night's British Fashion Awards provided a forum for all kinds of announcements - Christopher Bailey, who accepted both BFC Designer Brand of the Year for Burberry and BFC Designer of the Year, confirmed that Burberry will show in London again for Fall 2010; and Victoria Beckham said she's planning to take an active role in the BFC that in which she would mentor young designers or serve as an ambassador.

Christopher Kane was awarded BFC British Collection of the Year, Kate Moss won the publicly-voted London 25 Award, Peter Pilotto nabbed the Swarovski Emerging Talent Award for Ready-to-wear, and Georgia May Jagger took the BFC Model of the Year award - "Thank you so much to the BFC for picking me. I'd just like to say [fellow nominees] Daisy [Lowe] and Rosie [Huntington-Whiteley] are amazing girls and amazing models. Thanks to my mum for being the biggest inspiration."

But the model who really stole the night was Karen Elson, who, when onstage to present Grace Coddington with the Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator, walked straight into the orchestra pit and fell four feet out of sight. She emerged minutes later, ”I am the clumsiest person on this earth. I cannot believe I just did that. That is the worst fall I have ever had. I might have broken a rib, but I’m fine.” After presenting, she took to the emergency room to see about her injuries - including a sprained thumb.

Fall 2009 Fashion Week: Still Necessary, Just with Less of Everything

>> Designers may be pulling their belt tighter this Fashion Week, but hardly any are pulling out of the rat race altogether - the attention is too valuable. "You kill a thousand birds with one stone, because you get that many people there in an hour and you're getting one message across to them," says Scott Sternberg of Boy and Band of Outsiders. "They're writers and photographers and culturally indulgent people with loud mouths."

Instead, designers are saving by hosting presentations instead of runway shows (Monique Lhuillier, Temperley London, and Carmen Marc Valvo), inviting fewer guests (Marc Jacobs and DKNY, who's slicing her usual 1,000 down to 400), sending email invites instead of by mail (nearly everyone), or showing fewer looks to save on fabric and sample-making costs.

>> Victoria Beckham Modeled Fall 2010 Dress Off Osman Yousefzada's Fall 2009 Design? -During a trip to Moscow last week, Victoria Beckham reiterated that she has no plans to do a fast-fashion line and is instead focusing on becoming a luxury designer. She was in Russia showing her Fall 2010 collection, which boasts a column dress (below, right) recently garnering attention for its likeness to a young London designer's column dress (below, left). Osman Yousefzada says that Beckham borrowed the dress from his Fall 2009 collection and then returned it without buying it. He noted that "a lot of people have mentioned the similarity" between his dress and Beckham's Fall 2010 dress. "It is very flattering to think she may have tried my dress and been inspired to create something similar, since it means she must have liked the way the dress was cut and the way it felt to wear. CFDA Leaves London Fashion Week in the Dust

>> This is a snub, if I ever heard of one. For the Fall 2009 season, the CFDA has announced that New York Fashion Week will run from February 13-20, rather than February 6-13, as it has in the past. The reason for the switch? The designers don't want to have to show on Labor Day, September 1, for the Spring 2010 season, and they want the reorganizing to start ASAP.

But herein lies the problem: With the February date change, New York Fashion Week will still be going on when London Fashion Week was scheduled to take place. The British Fashion Council's chairman, Harold Tillman, flew to New York last week to talk with CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg about the issue, but as it lays right now, London Fashion Week only has four full days to show - February 21-24 - before Milan Fashion Week starts, not to mention little-to-no travel time for editors, buyers, and the like to be transported between the places. Drama, drama.
