Roberto Cavalli Conducts His Business on a 15-Year-Old Nokia Phone the Size of a Shoe

>> Roberto Cavalli doesn't like to be told no. He just celebrated his 40th anniversary in September, and when pondering the guest list, he told W in its December 2010 issue: "I will invite other designers, but they won't come - they are all sh*t."

He also hates to be told he can't do something. "I never understand why God gives the possibility to have children just to woman," Cavalli said, clutching theatrically at his belly. "Oh, my God, my dream would be to have a baby!" And: "When I go to a restaurant and they say, 'We're fully booked,' I say, 'It's Roberto Cavalli,' and they say, 'I will check.' I love it!" the designer said, clapping his hands with relish.

Cavalli, who turns 70 on Monday, definitely has his quirks - he conducts business from a 15-year-old Nokia cell phone the size of a shoe. "I bought all of the ones on eBay," he told W. And late at night, he has been writing a memoir of sorts - on his life in fashion, but more importantly to him, on the way he has fashioned his life. "I don't know what to write [about the] last 15 years," he said. "What model I have in my fashion show?"

>> Roberto Cavalli reportedly spent about $2 million on his 40th anniversary bash held last night at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris - and that doesn't include the budget allotted to bringing Natalia Vodianova (and perhaps some of the other 1,200 attendees) to the party. As the New York Times's Eric Wilson wrote: "It was one of those fashion parties that felt like another era, when it was possible to enjoy such extravagance without wondering how a designer could possibly be selling enough animal-printed evening gowns and exuberantly distressed denim to afford it all."

Kylie Minogue performed, the walls were lined with Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott's images of models in Cavalli, and Heidi Klum introduced the designer as a four-tier, 10-foot birthday cake covered in sparklers was wheeled onto the stage. But even through all that, Cavalli, almost 70, admitted he's not the party animal he used to be: “Don’t say it, don’t say it, please, because the people should still dream with me,” he said. “The young should think that, instead of sparkling water, I drink Krug, or that I still smoke 10 Cuban cigars every day.”

Roberto Cavalli Celebrates 40 Years By Shelling Out for Paris Bash, Natalia Vodianova Runway Appearance

>> Roberto Cavalli celebrated his 40th anniversary show today in Milan with a spectacular venue - the 19th-century marble Arco Della Pace - and an equally stellar cast: Erin Wasson, Laetitia Casta, who closed, and Natalia Vodianova, who opened.

Cavalli is reportedly paying Vodianova between 50,000 and 70,000 euros ($67,000 to $94,000) for both her runway appearance and her attendance at his gala dinner and bash on Sept. 29 at L'Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, a party which is said to be costing the designer over $2 million.

Cavalli, who turns 70 on Nov. 15, has seen his become a family business over the years: his 51-year-old wife, Eva, serves as creative director and drives the brand's image, selecting models, overseeing the ad campaigns, styling and staging the catwalk. And of their three children, Rachele, 28, collaborates with her parents on the brand's accessories, and Daniele, 24, works with Roberto and Eva on the men's collections.

Although there have been rumors of strife between Roberto and Eva in recent years, they are still apparently close and dependent on one another. As Roberto puts it, when you work together all day every day, "you bring your work-related problems and troubles into the bedroom."

Naomi Campbell Rings in 40 with $1 Million Bash

>> Naomi Campbell may be having issues due to an alleged diamond gift from Liberia's former president Charles Taylor, but she had no problem accepting gifts on Saturday for her 40th birthday - there were reportedly so many, they had to be be ferried back on multiple boat trips to her boyfriend Vladimir Doronin's yacht.

Doronin planned a rumored $1 million black panther-themed bash for the model (after her favorite animal) at the Hotel du Cap near Cannes, which included a 45-minute set by The Black Eyed Peas. P. Diddy and Tyson Beckford gave tributes during dinner, which saw Campbell seated at a revolving center table. Later, guests like John Galliano, Georgina Chapman, Lorenzo Martone, Edward Eninnful, Bethann Hardison, Shala Monroque, Hamish Bowles, Christy Turlington, Eva Herzigova, Grace Jones, Domenico Dolce, Stefano Gabbana, and Giovanna Battaglia hit the dance floor - where Marc Jacobs supposedly challenged Jennifer Lopez to a walk off.

At midnight, the music stopped so guests could sing "Happy Birthday," and a three tier cake was brought out; Doronin gave a speech, calling Naomi his "wild woman" and his "great love." Speaking of which, the model has been wearing a large emerald ring - sparking rumors - but her reps deny an engagement and Doronin remains married to his estranged wife.

The duo may have kept their business relationship intact, most recently walking the runway for a bow together at the end of June, but today, he was snapped with an unidentified "Russian model" on a yacht in Ponza, Italy, who appears to be leaning in for a kiss.

Their business partnership seems to continue - they took a bow at the end of the Cavalli menswear show together on June 22 - and she still lives in his previous home with the parrots and the indoor pool, just steps away, but when JJ Martin of T Magazine asked him if he ever goes into his old house:

He decisively responds, "No, no, no." Does Eva mind his absence? "I don't know," he answers quietly. "You'll have to ask her." So this is a way to live together but apart, I suggest. "Right," he says. "Is that bad?"

Roberto Cavalli, who like last year continues to offer his yacht up to guests and score a number of red carpet moments - including dressing Natasha Poly for today's Inglourious Basterds premiere - was spotted riding around atop a Segway. Georgina Chapman is also in town, cinching Marchesa dress appearances on the likes of Penelope Cruz yesterday and Diane Kruger today.

Lily Cole, in Cannes for her own upcoming movie premiere, stepped out with boyfriend Enrique Murciano on Monday. "I've been studying the history of art in college," she told FWD. "But the gorgeous beach and sun is what everyone needs with two weeks left in the semester!" Carine Roitfeld, who will have her big red carpet moment tomorrow at the amfAR benefit, appeared in lacy Balmain at a premiere today with Patrick Demarchelier.

Balenciaga muse Charlotte Gainsbourg debuted a Fall 2009 dress from the label at her Antichrist premiere, Eva Herzigova showed up in a sheer dress for the second year in a row, and Doutzen Kroes also popped up wearing Alaia, of which she tweeted, "So excited he lets me wear his dress!!"
