David Beckham Will Be Elle UK's First Solo Male Cover Star

>> Soccer player turned underwear designer David Beckham will make magazine history today when he poses for Elle UK's first cover that doesn't feature a woman.

Elle UK editor Lorraine Candy said the July issue will be pegged to this Summer's Olympic games in London, and picked Beckham because he bridges the gap between British sports and British fashion.

"David Beckham is a national hero, so we saw an opportunity to shoot a celebratory cover to support a historical and patriotic year," she said. "He is an icon and Elle is known for featuring icons on its cover. This is a first for us on the newsstand and I believe he is loved by men and women alike. Anyway, who doesn't want to see a picture of one of the world's most handsome men on the front cover of a magazine? It will be a collector's issue."

Elle has put men on its covers in the past, but most of them have been standing next to (or crouching underneath) women. Beckham, who's never been on the cover of a glossy women's magazine before, said he feels "honored to have been asked to be the first ever solo male fashion cover."

One Gold Balmain Dress Has Graced Six Fall Fashion Covers

One Miu Miu dress style (two colors) scored at least three fashion magazine covers over the Summer, but in the months since, a Fall 2010 gold Balmain dress - originally worn by Anja Rubik on the runway - is besting the Miu Miu dress twice over, with six covers so far. The Balmain look was first spotted on Abbey Lee Kershaw's August 2010 Vogue Germany cover, and has since been sported on covers by Cindy Crawford, Anna Dello Russo, and Natalia Vodianova. At least one more cover may be on the way - Anne Hathaway is said to be wearing "sparkly gold" Balmain on Elle UK's December 2010 cover.

September Issues: UK Fashion Mags Stick to Models (Save Elle), While US Mags Go with Actresses

>> The biggest issues of the year - for September - are trickling in, so who was chosen to be a big newsstand seller for each major fashion book? Both Harper's Bazaar UK and Vogue UK chose models - Natalia Vodianova by Paola Kudacki and Kate Moss by Mario Testino, respectively - while Harper's Bazaar and Vogue went with actresses - Leighton Meester by Terry Richardson and Charlize Theron (the latter of which is not yet out). American Vogue's choice of an actress is no surprise - in upcoming documentary The September Issue, the magazine's creative director Grace Coddington credits Anna Wintour with foreseeing the power of using celebrities on covers before anyone else - but the model/celebrity divide between the two countries is striking.

Meanwhile at Elle, both UK and US versions chose actresses: the former Lindsay Lohan by Rankin, the latter Jennifer Aniston (a well-known strong newsstand seller) by Alexei Hay.

Did Vogue Italia Editor-in-Chief Franca Sozzani get marred and not tell anyone about it? The magazine's website posted a scan from the Ugandan newspaper Red Pepper, which pictures Sozzani sitting next to oil magnate Charles Mbire. The paper referred to Sozzani as Mbire's wife, but Sozzani said the newspaper had bad intel. "The marital status I prefer is being single," she said. [Vogue Italia]
Supermodel Elle Macpherson turned 48 today - and she still looks better than most people do at 24. [The Fab Life]
Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have landed cameo roles in director Woody Allen's new film To Rome With Love, which debuts April 20. Penelope Cruz - the film's lead actress - will wear pieces from the duo's Spring 2012 collection in the film. [The Cut]
André Leon Talley has been off the airwaves since leaving the judging panel of America's Next Top Model, but soon he'll be back. In a new Bravo reality series - currently titled Fashion Stories of NYC - Tally will supervise competing teams of "emerging designers striving to build a business in New York City, which remains the heart of the fashion industry." Kate Young Named Most Powerful Stylist, Lucy Yeomans Leaves Harper's Bazaar UK, Ralph Rucci Adds Sportswear

Kate Young's styling work for Natalie Portman and Michelle Williams has earned her the title as most powerful stylist of 2012. Young tops the list of The Hollywood Reporter's 25 power stylists, trailed closely by Petra Flannery (spot three) and Christina Hastings (spot 10). L'Wren Scott, Brad Goreski, and Arianne Phillips also make appearances on the list. [The Hollywood Reporter]
On the same day that Barneys fashion director Amanda Brooks announced that she was leaving the company and moving to London, Harper's Bazaar UK editor Lucy Yeomans announced that she's leaving to direct the editorial efforts at Net-a-Porter. Jenny Dickinson, who used to work as an editor at Elle UK, will take over for Yeomans starting next month. [Daily Front Row]
Ralph Rucci, designer of the couture-level clothing brand Chado Ralph Rucci, announced today that he would be adding a secondary line, a line of sportswear, and possibly a fragrance to his product assortment. Rucci said he "realized that not everyone can afford a double-faced cashmere suit," and wants "to make other garments that more women can afford." [Fashion ETC]
When Simon Doonan talks, fashion listens. In his most recent column for Slate, Doonan proclaims that Queen Elizabeth II is the most fashionable woman in the world. "In an era when the fashion landscape has fragmented into an infinite archipelago of conflicting trends and incomprehensible ideas, the only thing that really matters is to have your own signature look. Who has accomplished this if not QE2?" Who, indeed? [Slate]
Time is bringing back its twice-yearly Style & Design supplement, and actress Emily Blunt is on the cover. She's also featured in the pages of the magazine wearing everyone from Rick Owens to Chanel to Balenciaga and Yves Saint Laurent. The comeback issue was delivered to half a million select Time subscribers today, and the next issue will come out during New York Fashion Week in September. [TIME]

Kanye West Fall 2012

>> On a runway hazy with dry-ice smoke, Kanye West presented the highly anticipated second collection for his eponymous line. Jourdan Dunn, Karlie Kloss, Joan Smalls, and Abbey Lee Kershaw all walked the show, while guests included Anna Wintour, Sean Combs, Alicia Keys, Kim Kardashian, Guiseppe Zanotti, Azzedine Alaia, Andre Leon Talley, and Common.

The collection itself was darker and more focused than last season, with body-skimming silhouettes, black leather, sheer panels, and plenty of fur. Most of last season's fit issues seem to have been resolved.

As for the general response? Overall, it's much better this time around, though the reviews are almost as diverse as the front-row crowd. Some highlights below:

Karlie Kloss Skips New York Fashion Week, Brad Goreski Spills All in His New Book, and Kanye West's Latest Fashion Project

Brad Goreski's new biography, Born to Be Brad, hits bookstores March 6 - and it's reportedly full of some surprisingly sordid details, including cocaine and alcohol abuse. "I was in our bathroom, staring in the mirror, and I didn't recognize myself," Goreski writes. [Stylecaster]

Speaking of March 6, that's the day Kanye West will be taking his second stab at Paris Fashion Week. Now, rumors are swirling that he may also be planning a line for Topshop. However, Topshop's CEO Sir Phillip Green, who was spotted having lunch with West in London, denies that a collaboration is in the works. [Fashionista]

Looks like Karlie Kloss is skipping New York Fashion Week; The Daily Beast's Isabel Wilkinson confirmed the news today via Twitter. "Karlie Kloss won't walk in New York Fashion Week this season because of an 'engagement that has come up,' says her spokesperson," Wilkinson said. [Styleite]

James Franco has directed and shot the latest 7 For All Mankind campaign, featuring Lily Donaldson, Henry Hopper, and Amber Anderson. The campaign - which the brand describes as an "innovative multimedia experience that embodies the brand's California roots and 'forever cool' aesthetic" - launches on a dedicated You Tube channel Feb. 15. Despite a very successful design career, Stella McCartney doesn't think of herself as famous. "I don't think many people recognize me," the designer recently said. "I guess, I grew up with one of the most famous people in the world, so for me, I don't really see it." McCartney goes on to say that she still gets excited when seeing her designs on strangers in public: "I'm embarrassing when I see someone in the street with one of my bags, I'm like 'nice bag'. CFDA Fashion Fund winner Joseph Altuzarra has quite a sweet tooth. The designer - who shows his Fall 2012 collection this Saturday - recently divulged the 12 things he can't live without. Harper's Bazaar to Get a Creative Revamp

>> A decade into her career as editor of Harper's Bazaar, Glenda Bailey is ready to give the magazine a major creative refresh.

Bazaar - which was already headed for an increase in trim size, an upgrade in paper and cover stock, and a reduction in frequency from 11 to 10 issues per year - will also receive the design input of Robin Derrick of Spring Studios. Bailey hired Derrick, who was creative director of Vogue UK for 10 years until last June, to work with Bazaar's creative director Stephen Gan on what are expected to be big changes - that will be revealed in the magazine's March 2012 issue.

“After 10 years, it’s time to refresh - Stephen and I are looking forward to evolving Bazaar’s design for the next decade, and we are excited to be collaborating with Robin,” Bailey said.

Of all the major fashion magazines - Vogue, Elle, and W - Bazaar was the only one to suffer a drop in ad pages in the first six months of 2011. The trend continued in the third quarter of this year, with the magazine's ad pages falling 4.1 percent year over year.

Alexander McQueen's White Fall 2011 Finale Gowns - A Preview of Kate Middleton's Wedding Dress?

Particularly when the collection includes a small selection of decadent white gowns - which by the finale, had the fashion flock convinced that British designer Burton should be doing Middleton's gown (if she's not already).
