Fashion Descends on Miami For Art Basel (Updated)

>> Art Basel Miami is officially under way today, but a few fashion houses got a head start on the festivities yesterday. Swarovski hosted a dinner at Soho Beach House, Dior unveiled its first pop-up shop - and first artist collaboration, with Anselm Reyle - and Fendi opened its "Craft Alchemy" installation, drawing a colorfully dressed crowd that included Giovanna Battaglia, Naomi Campbell, and Dasha Zhukova.

Dasha Zhukova, Rodarte, and More Descend on Los Angeles For the 2011 MOCA Gala

>> The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles hosted its annual gala on Saturday night, drawing Laura and Kate Mulleavy, Tilda Swinton, Rachel Zoe, Shala Monroque, and event chair Dasha Zhukova.

The evening, curated by the performance artist Marina Abramovic, started with guests being asked to put on a white lab coat before sitting down to dinner; each table, meanwhile, had a live, rotating human head for a centerpiece, with the attached performance artists sitting beneath. Diners were given a list of rules about interacting with the centerpiece, such as, "The centerpiece will observe you. You may observe the centerpiece." and "No touching, feeding, offering drink, or disrespecting the centerpiece."

Debbie Harry was shortly thereafter carried onstage to serenade the crowd with “One Way or Another” and “Heart of Glass.” Postperformance, two life-size nude cakes of Harry and Abramovic were brought out. With a machete, Harry removed her cake's red velvet heart, and then teams of shirtless men descended on the two cakes with meat cleavers, sending toes, breasts, and other various anatomical parts to the different tables on dessert plates.

A First Look at all Three Covers from Dasha Zhukova's New Garage Magazine (NSFW)

>> Here's the first glimpse of Dasha Zhukova's much-anticipated new magazine, Garage. Hitting newstands September 5th, the magazine's main editorial - as well as one of it's three covers - was photographed by Hedi Slimane and features some provactively-placed tattoos. "The 'INKED' project is really emblematic of the mission of the magazine - bringing together individuals from diverse creative fields to produce something compelling and bold," Zhukova said of the magazine's inaugural theme. Jeff Koons, Richard Prince, Paul McCarthy, and Damien Hirst were all tapped to design tattoos for the issue; it's Hirst's version that graces the main cover, which ships with a peel-back modesty sticker in the shape of a butterfly (left).

The two alternative covers of Garage feature the work of prominent artists as well: one cover features a Nick Knight and Dinos Chapman image of a doll house with a Lily Donaldson doll playing inside, while the other cover features a tattoo design created by Richard Prince. Despite the alternative covers, W.H. Smith has already banned the magazine from sale at its stores in England. However, Barnes & Noble will stock the magazine.

>> As a Dolce-and-Gabbana-sporting Lauren Santo Domingo sat down to the three course lunch at yesterday's Veuve Clicquot-sponsored Governor’s Island Polo Classic in New York - which began with caviar - she noted, WWD reports (seven weeks after giving birth to her first son): “'The only thing I really, really craved during my pregnancy was caviar,' Santo Domingo said, daintily separating it with her fork from the fennel infused creme-fraiche custard below. 'I was Googling it constantly to see if it was something that, you know, you shouldn’t eat. Somehow, there were more people Googling ‘crack while pregnant’ than ‘caviar’ on most Web sites… But I asked Dasha [Zhukova], seeing as she’s Russian and a great mother, and she said it was OK.'" Fashion Descends on Venice for the 2011 Biennale

While some have already come and gone - Anna Wintour, Francois-Henri Pinault, and Salma Hayek Pinault were already spotted attending the French Open in Paris today - we've the fleeting moments of the last couple of days' festivities captured in our slideshow at left.

Dasha Zhukova Confirms She's Launching a New Magazine

>> There have been rumors circulating in the last couple of months that Dasha Zhukova - since resigning from POP last November - was working on a new magazine. Now, she confirms the rumors are true.

Dubbed Garage (the same as her flagship Moscow museum, the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture), it's set to launch in September and will be an art magazine with a strong fashion angle. "It's going to be a girls' magazine," Zhukova says. "I have more ideas than I know what to do with. I guess I'm a bit of a fantasist and a daydreamer - all sorts of things come to me during the day."

She's also enlisted former Vogue Paris editor Joan Juliet Buck as a consultant for the magazine, as well as Vanessa Traina. "I'll set projects up and hand them over," Zhukova explains. "I'm a delegator and I find that quite easy. I feel I do it intuitively. But I have to trust that the people I work with are going to make decisions I approve of."

Man About Town Dedicates Issue to Hedi Slimane's Los Angeles; Dasha Zhukova to Guest Edit Vogue Russia's June 2011 Art Issue

>> The Spring/Summer 2011 issue of Paris-based biannual Man About Town is devoted to Hedi Slimane's Los Angeles and is stuffed cover to cover with his signature black-and-white images featuring skinny youths. Plus, there's a spread of a tomboy Agyness Deyn - a preview of the issue above and in the video below. “This issue is all about the creative or artistic community in Los Angeles, not the well-known Hollywood side, but rather the subcultures, something like a tribute to ‘indie California,’ ” Slimane explained to Style.com. "The LA portfolio might be somehow one of the most personal and intimate projects I have done in ten years."

And speaking of dedicated issues, Dasha Zhukova, who is rumored to be launching a new magazine, is set to be guest editor of Vogue Russia's June 2011 Art Issue. A preview can be seen here.
