Emmanuelle Alt Explains Her Vision for Vogue Paris, Her Stance on Celebrity Covers

>> During couture, Emmanuelle Alt hinted that Vogue Paris under her direction would be "the same, but different"; Vogue's Mark Holgate got her to expand a little more on her vision for the magazine:

“I want to keep the quality, the photographers we work with - David [Sims], Mert and Marcus, Mario [Testino], and Bruce Weber. I don’t think there should be radical changes. The magazine should still be chic and sophisticated. It’s a bit like buying an apartment: Before you move in, you have all these plans of what you are going to do, but then you get there, and you realize it is better to spend time living in it, and transforming it over time. I’d like there to be more beauty trends; there was so much of that in Vogue back in the eighties. More French girls, more French lifestyle. And I am going to keep shooting for the magazine - hopefully a story every issue." She adds: "I always want a relationship with reality: nothing too sexy, or provocative, or fashion victim. We are French - we can show smoking, nudity. We have no boundaries, and it can be good to have them."

As for her position on celebrity covers: “We don’t have a systematic point of view on it. But here in France we are back in a much more glamorous time. French actresses were respected, but not so evidently in the fashion world. Now we have Marion Cotillard, Charlotte Gainsbourg. I’d be very happy to put an actress on the cover if she is the right girl.” And her model favorites are no surprise: “Daria [Werbowy] is the girl I work with the most. She has a natural, strong beauty. You can put her in a white tee and she will make it look fantastic. I like Kate [Moss] too, because she cares about clothes. Most models don’t care what you put them in, they just play the game.”

>> After seasons and seasons of Carmen Kass-fronted ads, Michael Kors has switched to another Estonian-born Karmen this season: Karmen Pedaru, who Kors paired with Simon Nessman for his Spring 2011 ad campaign. “They’re both youthful and elegant all at once - which makes them so very Michael Kors,” the designer explained. >> Daria Werbowy has never appeared in a Victoria's Secret Fashion Show lineup, but it's not because Victoria's Secret didn't want her. According to The Imagist, back before Werbowy signed her Lancome contract in April 2005, Lancome and Victoria's Secret were in a bidding war over her: "It was down to the wire till the last moment. Two power clients bidding at the same time for the exclusive services of [Werbowy]. And then the negotiations swung the way of Lancome, and the rest is contract history." [The Imagist]

>> For the 2011 Pirelli calendar, which launched in Moscow today, Karl Lagerfeld said that he produced “the visual version of Homer. I did with my camera what he did with his pen, although we understand that he probably didn't use a pen.” Lagerfeld gathered 15 female models, 5 male models, and Julianne Moore in his Paris studio back in April to produce 36 black and white images of deities from ancient Greece and Rome for the calendar. “I wanted to do something different. I looked at all the other calendars,” he explained, adding: “With such a concept and boys and girls like this, it was an easy job.”

Lagerfeld was surrounded by a cadre of the models featured for the Moscow launch, including Natasha Poly sporting a new brunette hair color. But who did he cast as whom? Julianne Moore plays Hera, Brad Kroenig poses as Zeus, Lara Stone gives her best Aphrodite, Jeneil Williams channels Hades, and Baptiste Giabiconi embodies the roles of both Narcissus and Apollo.

The rest of the cast includes: Bianca Balti (as a Bacchante), Elisa Sednaoui (Flora, Echo), Freja Beha Erichsen (Apollo, Pollux, Orpheus), Isabeli Fontana (a Bacchante), Magdalena Frackowiak (Athena, Estia), Anja Rubik (Hermes, Terpsichore), Abbey Lee Kershaw (Echo, Castor, Eurydice), Lakshmi Menon (a Bacchante), Heidi Mount (Aurora, Amphitrite), Erin Wasson (Ajax, a Bacchante), Natasha Poly (Melpomene), Daria Werbowy (Artemis, Penthesilea), Iris Strubegger (Athena), Sebastien Jondeau (Mars), Garret Neff (Bacchus), and Jake Davis (Achilles).

>> Fashion's Night Out Runway Show Tickets Go On Sale Tomorrow - Anna Wintour and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced yesterday that tickets for the Fashion's Night Out highly anticipated public runway show - the biggest of its kind ever held in New York - will go on sale tomorrow, Aug. 19, at 10 am, and can be purchased online for $25 here. The runway spectacle, which takes place on Sept. 7 at 7:30 pm at Lincoln Center’s Josie Robertson Plaza, will show off Vogue's top Fall trends displayed by over 150 models - including Karlie Kloss, Chanel Iman, Raquel Zimmermann, and Daria Werbowy - to a 1,500 capacity audience. >> There's little change in Yves Saint Laurent's usual campaign formula for Fall 2010 - supermodel shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin - but this time, the duo is working with Daria Werbowy, who van Lamsweerde recently named among her favorite models to work with, along with Raquel Zimmermann, Kate Moss, and Anja Rubik: "They all have this huge range. They’re mature, they’re grown up, they’re women who have had a life and experience. For about five or six years now we haven’t shot anyone under 18 for that reason, but also for the fact that we feel that the modeling business should not promote girls working under 18. They’re not out of school, their bodies aren’t developed yet, they don’t have a sense of self yet, sometimes they haven’t had sex yet. It’s hard to project all these things on someone who hasn’t had that experience."
