Balmain Turns to Military Sauvage for Spring 2010

>> With Laduree macaroons catered backstage and Rihanna arriving half an hour late to sit front row, Daria Werbowy opened (and closed, and walked in the middle of) the Balmain show - her only show for the season - in the gilded, marbled ballroom of The Grand Hotel.

Christophe Decarnin's strong shoulders and ripped jeans were still present, but gone were the '80s. This season, “it’s warrior women and the military, with a mix of different times and a touch of Mad Max," he told Suzy Menkes; stylist Emmanuelle Alt's personal style was prevalent as ever, particularly in the pants-and-jackets combinations.

Since Decarnin took over at Balmain in 2006, the brand's ready-to-wear sales have double each season, according to CEO Alain Hivelin, and next season brings an eyewear collection with Oliver Peoples. The brand's much-buzzed-about $2,000 jeans are priced as such because, Hivelin says, certain pieces receive hundreds of hours of embroidery or have been reworked up to 50 times before they hit retail. But here's irony for you: Decarnin picks up his own wardrobe at army surplus stores.

Meanwhile, Rihanna - who Anna Wintour is rumored to have passed on - is said to have an upcoming VI editorial by Steven Klein. And as for August 2009 Vogue Paris, which was previously reported to focus entirely on Daria Werbowy, it seems that she's not exclusive: other models appear in the entirely Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin-lensed issue. >> Ever since Daria Werbowy took three months off last summer to sail across the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, she tells the Telegraph UK she's "definitely changed" and is having having "an existential . . . not crisis, but wake-up. I'm asking more questions about life in general. It's like, 'Oh my God, there's a whole world of things to learn about.' So I'm just taking it easy."

She's not a fan of doing interviews - "I always tell Kate [Moss] she's lucky because she doesn't have to do interviews" - and she's considering studying philosophy or psychology. In the meantime, she has been painting and sculpting: "Whether that'll ever evolve into anything I don't know. I'm still trying to search for what will be next."

>> Matthew Williamson's Summer collection for H&M hits stores May 14, and what better way to catch attention than with a trippy one-minute online-only segment beginning with Daria Werbowy waking up and proclaiming, "Always the same, it's boring" and ending with Williamson rising from a colorful meteor crater, quipping, "Well I haven't done it all . . . yet." In between, trippy music, models jumping out of life-size magazines, pink horses . . . directed by Johan Renck and with the theme "It's time for change," it definitely sticks with you.

>> ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL -We've seen bits and pieces of Matthew Williamson's H&M line - and here's a video interview with him talking about the collection - but now we've got a glimpse of the first campaign image with Daria Werbowy. Model and designer traveled all the way to Mexico to shoot what could be a studio shot, but the airtime was done for the sunlight on the Mexican beach. Grazia has behind-the-scenes pictures of the shoot with Solve Sundsbo, Daria posing on a platform of water. Matthew is also supposed to be in the campaign, but we'll have to wait for subsequent shots to see that. [Fem, Grazia]

>> Matthew Williamson's colorful range for H&M doesn't hit stores until April 23 (with more Summer pieces following mid-May), but previews are already hitting the web, featuring a wide-sleeved sequin minidress (below), $200, a cobalt blue silk suit with fuschia piping, and a tan leather jacket with neon piping among them. Unfortunately, we have to wait until May issues break to see the campaign, shot by Solve Sundsbo with Williamson and Daria Werbowy in Mexico.

Daria Werbowy Checks Out for Roberto Cavalli Spring 2009

>> We haven't seen much of Daria Werbowy lately, but the Spring 2009 Robert Cavalli campaign allows us to see at least two sides of her - bronzed glamazon Daria and and modern Marilyn Monroe Daria. Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin helped Cavalli get his money shots - and that's definitely what he's after, judging by his newest foray: the "Cavalli card," a reptillian credit card looking to give the AmEx black card a little competition.

McBeha Surfaces in Sydney

>> We haven't had a good Catherine McNeil-Freja Beha Erichsen tandem sighting since October, when they showed up together at the Chanel Mobile Art Exhibit Opening. Their closeness has endured a lot of speculation, but as yet, there is no confirmation as to the nature of their relationship - McNeil's Australian agent Kathy Ward's sole response to the rumors in October: "I don't comment on models' personal affairs."

Close they still seem to be - the two checked out of Sheraton on the Park in Sydney this morning, with McNeil sporting an unexpected ankle wrap and crutches. No word on whether the injury happened on the job, but she joins three other top models who've done their own wrap or cast stints this year - Daria Werbowy, Lara Stone, and Erin Wasson.
