Doutzen Kroes Speaks Out Against Sample Sizes at CFDA Heath Initiative Panel

>> Last night, the CFDA gathered an audience at Milk Studios in Manhattan for a Health Initiative discussion on “The Beauty of Health: Resizing the Sample Size.” James Scully, the casting director who worked on the likes of Jason Wu's and Stella McCartney's shows last season and Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent's during Tom Ford's reign, laid it out:

Of the 172 girls I saw for casting for fashion week, 75 of those were 16 or under. Everybody is demanding the girls fit into a 33-inch hip. A teenage boy has a 32-inch hip . . . they start too young and suddenly when they’re 17 turning 18 and they grow breasts and hips, they’ll do anything to fit into the size.

Doutzen Kroes, who started in the industry at 18 and was pressured to lose weight, offered her perspective: “I never fit the sample. I probably fit it once, when I was 11." Her solution? “We had what we called an ‘ass meeting’ with my agent. I chose to have a healthy lifestyle and work around that.”

DNA Models, 1 Model Management Involved in Denisa Dvorakova Shuffle, Scuffle

>> Squabbling amongst modeling agencies is nothing new — everyone wants the primo girls, after all. A couple of months ago, DNA Models's head booker Louie Chaban sent shockwaves around when he booked it over to Women Model Management, with rumors following after that he took Agyness Deyn with him (even though she's currently listed on DNA's board).

Now, DNA Models is having more booker trouble. 1 Model Management filed suit last week against the agency, alleging that DNA hired one of its former bookers, Vivien Wang, despite the fact that she signed an agreement to not work for any of 1MM's competitors for one year she left DNA in May.

And here's the rub: Vivien she took Denisa Dvorakova, an up-and-coming model who walked most of the big couture shows in July (Chanel, Christian Dior, Valentino, Christian Lacroix) with her to DNA. Losing a promising talent in the month before the fashion weeks hurts.

Maryna Linchuk, Ford Models Target of Lawsuit by DNA Model Management

>> In a lawsuit filed Wednesday, DNA is suing Maryna Linchuk for breach of contract and Ford Models for allegedly luring her away. According to papers filed, Linchuk signed an exclusive management agreement with DNA in 2006 and then signed on for another two years in 2008. But, on April 15, 2011, she sent an email to DNA saying she was thinking of leaving the agency, and a Ford rep followed up soon after with a request that all of Linchuk's bookings and options be passed on to him. DNA seeks at least $2 million in damages as restitution for the "significant sums of money [advanced] to Linchuk and on her behalf." The suit continues: "From February 2006 to the present, DNA has invested heavily in promoting, marketing and managing Linchuk's career and professional image, preparing her for and helping her choose modeling assignments, shoots, etc. As a direct result of DNA's efforts, Linchuk has become a successful and sought after model." Marios Schwab's Status at Halston; Plus, Why Sarah Jessica Parker Didn't Work Out

>> On the heels of news that Sarah Jessica Parker and Harvey Weinstein are both on their way out from Halston, the next logical question is: What about Halston creative director Marios Schwab?

According to WWD, there's recently been speculation that Schwab's contract may not be renewed unless he relocates from London, where he designs his eponymous collection, to New York, where Halston is based. Adding fuel to that fire is the fact that Halston owners Hilco Consumer Capital currently seem to be interested in pursuing a licensing model over selling the brand or seeking additional investment to support Schwab.

But where did it go wrong with Parker? WWD points out: "Unlike Victoria Beckham and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who have made successful transitions into fashion, Parker never put her entertainment projects on the back burner to focus exclusively on Halston and instead spent months on movie sets when she might have been a fixture in Halston’s showroom . . . In the early days, Parker was very involved in the Halston Heritage design process and, on occasion, sported the label in her public outings. Over time, however, the actress is said to have used her role at the firm to demand the kinds of clothes she wanted for herself, which were often at odds with the positioning of the contemporary Heritage collection and the overall DNA of Halston."

Under Parker's current agreement with Hilco, which is in the process of being terminated, she is said to be entitled to roughly $13 million over the next four years.

Anna Sui Mourns the Loss of Supermodels on the Runway, Made Karl Lagerfeld Complain Once Upon a Time

>> Stunt casting has really become part of the fashion show DNA in the past couple of seasons, but Anna Sui's runway casts have always boasted at least a few special girls - sometimes even a few supermodels. Though now, she says, "It’s a different time. We are now going through a period of a lot of Eastern European. It’s more about their look than their personalities. It was the most terrifying thing to do fittings with supermodels, because they would come in and look at your Polaroid board and count how many outfits they had, what order they came out in, and who were they next to. They would say things like, 'She is taller than me, and I am not coming out after her,' 'How come she has three outfits, and I only have two,' and 'I want that outfit.' They’d literally pull the Polaroid off the board and say they want to wear this. There was a reason they were supermodels, though. When they put on an outfit, everyone was floored."

That includes Karl Lagerfeld - who took notice of Sui's dresses before she even had her first runway show. As Sui tells it, "Linda [Evangelista] and Naomi [Campbell] went to the couture shows the Summer before my first show, and they were wearing my cotton lace baby-doll dresses. All of a sudden, I started getting phone calls from Paris, and other models like Helena Christensen were asking for the dress. I heard that Karl [Lagerfeld] was complaining. Everyone came into the couture fitting wearing my dresses, and he was like 'Who is this Anna?'"
