Edward Enninful Has Big Plans for W's September Issue

>> W's new fashion and style editor Edward Enninful won't make his full debut for the magazine until September, but his stamp can already be seen on the magazine's July 2011 cover featuring Christina Aguilera, he says: "I was involved with Christina. I worked with our contributing editor Giovanna Battaglia on the look and the photography and also Lynn Hirschberg. And I wanted to show Christina in a new light, show off the icon that she is."

As for his future plans for the magazine: "We'll continue to work with photographers like Craig McDean, Patrick Demarchelier, Mario Sorrenti, Inez and Vinoodh, Mert and Marcus, but we also have a few big names in the pipeline and you'll see it in the coming months, particularly in September ... The September issue will be first big issue for myself, along with Alex Gonzalez, the creative director, and sort of Giovanna Battaglia, whom we offered to be fashion editor and hopefully a few other editors. And we're going to feature the industry's biggest names and well-known photographers. I think you'll be pleased. And what I love about this sort of blend of photographers is that each one has their own unique style. So if it's okay I'd like to keep their names under wrap just to surprise our readers. It's really hard to keep anything secret these days. But I try."

>> W fashion director Alex White recently started a blog, "Alex White Edits," where she posts the Polaroids she snaps at photoshoots, adding handwritten commentary, illustrations, and videos from behind the scenes. The images provide a peek into what doesn't make the final cut for the magazine, insight into the genesis of her shoots and their inspiration, and the like. The latest post is a look at the "One of a Kind" couture shoot she did with Lara Stone and Craig McDean at Pier 59 Studios in New York on Feb. 1 and 2, which appears in W's April 2011 issue. We've got a few exclusive photos White took on set of Stone in the gallery, along with a few from the final cut for comparison.

>> Stella McCartney is known for her quirky, even cartoony campaigns, and this time, she enlisted Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott to shoot Joan Smalls and Malgosia Bela for Spring 2011. The ads show Bela wearing nothing but a collage of blown-up images of McCartney's Spring fruit print or Smalls wearing a swimsuit-shaped collage of pastel-colored suit lapels. “I wanted to play with the purity and realism of the citrus print from summer 2011….exaggerating the scale and playing with the female form in its purest form, as nature intended,” McCartney told WWD. A look at that, plus Erin Wasson's minimalist turn for Elie Saab, Patricia van der Vliet's maximalist turn for Sonia Rykiel, and Raquel Zimmermann and Freja Beha Erichsen for H&M, all in the gallery.

A Trio of First Ever Print Ads, Including Alexander Wang's; Plus, The Full Spring 2011 Versace Set

>> A trio of first campaigns have popped up for Spring 2011: Shu Pei Qin's premiere ad as a Maybelline model; Peter Copping's first ever Nina Ricci ad image, featuring Malgosia Bela shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin at New York's Greenwich Hotel ("She looks contemporary, modern, sensual - all those things I see for the Ricci woman,” Copping explained); and Alexander Wang's first ever print ad, featuring Aymeline Valade shot by Craig McDean. Although Wang doesn't like his four images, styled by his show stylist Karl Templer and creative directed by Fabien Baron, to be called a campaign. “We restrained from using those words, because you set yourself up for doing things in a systematic way - like rolling out ads in the magazines certain times of the year,” said the designer, who instead uses the term “image piece.” All those - and for good measure, the full Spring 2011 Versace campaign, featuring Abbey Lee Kershaw by Mario Testino - in the gallery.

Interview Continues Black, White, and Red Cover Pattern with September 2010 Issue

>> When Interview's August 2010 cover of Marion Cotillard surfaced, Fashionista pointed out that the magazine has started to favor a "standard cover composition: a tight shot of a woman’s face in a black, white, and red palette." It became prevalent as far back as Kristen Stewart's October/November 2009 and Penelope Cruz's December 2009/January 2010 covers and continued for three months in a row with Madonna in May 2010, Megan Fox in June/July 2010, and Marion in August 2010.

Now, Blake Lively's September 2010 cover is out and it follows the same basic pattern - close headshot in blue-tinted grayscale highlighted by red on the cheeks and lips. It seems strange that with Fabien Baron's creative power behind the scenes there's such a formula in place. Will the magazine break out of it next issue?

Preview Alexander Wang's Two New Fall 2010 Campaigns

>> Alexander Wang had not one, but two ad campaigns come out today. The first - a follow-up to his premiere T campaign last season featuring Hannah Holman - is a portrait of his friend Zoe Kravitz alongside model Max Motta, which just like last season will be plastered on the streets of New York starting tomorrow.

And the second, something new for Wang: his first-ever main line campaign video, a collaboration with Craig McDean, Wang's show stylist Karl Templer, and Fabien Baron, featuring Abbey Lee Kershaw in a deserted Manhattan hotel. “This is our way to sum up the season in a different light other than the show,” Wang told WWD. “It’s abstracted . . . Rather than saying, ‘Here’s the product,’ this is more about expressing ourselves.”

First Look: Stefano Tonchi's September 2010 W

>> Stefano Tonchi's W revamp involves a new italic logo; a new tagline - "it’s not just women’s fashion, but the world of style and, more exactly, our five Ws: the who, the what, the where, the when and the why in the world of style"; and a new direction - "It’s more about fashion in the context of contemporary culture."

The September 2010 issue, which gives a first look at Tonchi's front to back W makeover, features up-and-coming actresses Kat Dennings (Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, Kenneth Branagh's upcoming Thor), Jessica Chastain (Terrence Malick's upcoming The Tree of Life), Yaya DaCosta (The Kids Are All Right, Tron: Legacy), Greta Gerwig (Greenberg), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone, the upcoming X-Men: First Class), Emma Roberts, and Zoe Kravitz in three triple-page foldout covers, which according to Tonchi the magazine has never done before, photographed by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. The main cover headline reads "Great Expectations" because Tonchi "wanted to have some self-irony, because there are so many expectations about what this W will be," and Lynn Hirschberg's name is listed on the cover because Tonchi "want[s] to put writers’ names on the cover. The content - the writers - are going to have a strong place in the magazine."

Cate Blanchett Shares Her Beauty Obsession and Love of Fashion With W Magazine

Cate Blanchett appears on the June cover of W magazine wearing an Yves Saint Laurent Edition silk satin bustier, styled by Lori Goldstein and photographed by Craig McDean. Inside the magazine, on newsstands May 25, the 41-year-old actress discusses her theater company and raising three boys, but it is in the article's outtakes that we find her views on fashion and beauty:

On her attitude toward fashion: "I love it. I don't spend my life worshipping it, but I love beautiful things. I don't really think about 'my aesthetic.' It's eclectic I guess. I'm interested in juxtaposing the unexpected."

On her favorite beauty aid: "Dry shampoo. It has changed my life."

Proenza Schouler Fall 2010: Graffiti Pants, Schoolgirl Skirts - And Anna Wintour Watching Without Her Sunglasses On

>> If you didn't get enough late '90s references at Alexander Wang, look to Proenza Schouler to fill your Fall 2010 quota. Newcomer Ann Kenny - who has the most arresting blue eyes - opened the show in high-waisted graffiti pants, made in collaboration with J Brand, and a shrunken navy toggle jacket. All the John Fleuvog-style curved platform heels and sheer thigh highs paired with full pleated school girl-style miniskirts must have caught Anna Wintour's attention - she sat next to Bee Shaffer the entire show, sunglasses-less (a first?), until the final runthrough when she finally put her trademark shades on.

Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez had the house packed: benches arranged around the X-shaped runway sat as many as they could possibly fit - with the likes of Pamela Love, Mary-Kate Olsen, Jen Brill, Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, Carine Roitfeld (in green furry heels), Joseph Altuzarra, Lauren Santo Domingo, Vanessa Traina, Chloe Sevigny, Craig McDean, Terry Richardson, and Olivier Zahm all accounted for. Bass pumped through Milk Studios loud enough to shake the walls, while fuzzy printed flannel dresses and alpine knits evolved into razor-sharp cropped jackets and finally, patterned minidresses with bubble skirts and trapeze shapes.

Marie Chaix styled once again, and if you're a fan of straight-off-the-runway (many front-rowers had their PS 1 clutches handy), for the next 24-odd hours, two of the runway handbags are available for purchase. Post-show, a sight: Hamish Bowles, in his usual dapper suit, but instead of his usual brogues, his trousers stuffed into shiny black wellies. A video of the show can be seen here.
