Preview the Upcoming Marni and H&M Collaboration

>> H&M already has its next designer collaboration lined up: Marni. The collection, which encompasses womenswear, menswear, jewelry, shoes, bags, and scarves, hits 260 H&M stores worldwide and online on March 8, 2012.

Look forward to tribal prints mixed with colorful Bauhaus graphics: "I wanted to create a true Marni wardrobe by revisiting all our favorite pieces in signature fabrics and prints," explains Consuelo Castiglioni. "As always, I love juxtaposing prints and colors, mixing modern tribal with Bauhaus graphic adding sporty utilitarian elements."

According to the collection's press release: "For women, the colors are vivid and the prints are bold, be they African inspired or simpler color blocks. The silhouettes are all Marni staples, with full pleated skirts, dresses, cropped trousers and jacquard knit, and fabrics range from silk to crisp cotton poplin. For men, the colors and fabrics are softened for a relaxed take on menswear staples that is truly Marni. The use of print is subtle, often as a lining or as a contrast detail for shirts, the silhouette a modern and relaxed take on masculine classics."

>> While her husband's got his fingers in the new Vionnet pie, Consuelo Castiglioni worked her hand at Marni, earning rave reviews across the board - reviews that probably weren't hurt by the fact that more than one fashion editor left the brand's outlet in Milan happy. The eternal mixmaster may have turned down the brights from Spring, but there was still plenty to look at - bib necklaces, fur earmuffs and mittens, patterned tights - and let's not forget those standout geometric jacquard dresses, done just right in jeweltone metallics.

Marni's Magpie

We have always loved Consuelo Castiglioni's Marni more for her signature shapes, tunics, belted sack dresses and cardigans, than for her quirky grandma magpie aesthetic so it is with some disappointment we see her kooky side got the best of the Spring 2009 colection.

Bright neons, crazy mixed prints, cartoonish combinations and enormous accessories are all things we have seen in the past from Marni, but they were colorful additions to the core basics of innovative technical fabrics and subtly over the top silhouettes, they were never the line itself. It was all a little too animated, even a bit too ecclectic and this is coming from an editor wedded to the to the kind of individual dress for yourself aesthetic that has become the Marni way. We are confident we can break down the sheers and the polkda dots into something closer to our preferred Marni. So perhaps this is Consuelo's way of making her customer think a little harder to be a Marni girl.

Vera Marni?

We really hate to compare legitimately unique designers to their peers, preferring to judge each collection on its own merits, but we couldn't help but see a little bit of our beloved Marni in Vera Wang's Spring 2009 collection shown just a few hours ago. Vera has always had a signature aesthetic that borders on the dark and dreamy, one which we find quite compelling by and large.

But with her Spring 2009 collection we felt it had a kind of brooding maturity that we often associate with Consuelo Castiglioni. Vera has often as if she were appealing to the young and Gothic among us even if beneath that darkness it was a very pretty girl with a yen for ballet. But this collection had a kind of studied seriousness that made us do a double take. Dark loose dresses, cardigans, full skirts, boxy proportions and easy styling said this is a woman's wardrobe.

We long to be 40, casually creative (but moneyed) and graying just to have the gravitas to pull off the kind of clothing that says I am relaxed, older, confident and much too stylish to require any frippery but the most intellectual accessories. Marni has always helped us aspire towards that goal and now we feel Vera might be on our list as well.

H&M Rumored to Have Luxury Clothing Label in the Works

>> H&M, the Swedish company known 'round the world for its well-priced fast fashion, is said to have a much more luxurious - and much more expensive - line of clothing in the works.

Swedish financial newspaper Dagens Industri reported Friday that the company would expand into new territory with a clothing label designed by Behnaz Aram, the head designer at H&M New Business. The New Business concept oversees brands like Cheap Monday and Cos, which makes the highest-priced clothing the company currently sells - but the new venture is rumored to be "even more expensive and luxurious than Cos," according to the Dagens Industri story.

H&M spokeswoman Charlotta Nemlin told WWD Monday that new ideas are "a natural part of our work. However, there is nothing new that we can [talk] about for the moment."

But if the brand isn't going to create luxury fashion in-house, it certainly aligns itself with designers and brands who do. H&M has collaborated with everyone from Karl Lagerfeld to Marni's Consuelo Castiglioni, and celebrities like Michelle Williams and Kristin Davis have been seen wearing dresses from its Exclusive Conscious collection on the red carpet. H&M's main business isn't in luxury fashion, but adding a luxury line wouldn't be a stretch.

Marni Fall 2012

>> Consuelo Castiglioni's vision for Fall 2012 looks something like this: polished, bright, and just a tad '60s - with a dash of Orientalism thrown in for good measure. Solid hues - tomato red, camel, grey, and baby blue - provide a high-contrast colorblock palette, while python, plaid, gold jacquard, and patent leather offer texture. Silhouettes are boxy, layered, and slightly round-shouldered on top, with knee-length skirts and creased ankle trousers lending a sense of straight-cut stability on bottom. "I was interested in architecture and controlled lines," Castiglioni explained.

Clean lines aside, this wouldn't be Marni without a fair amount of quirk. This season, it came in the form of oversize utility pockets, fold-over fur collars, opaque white tights, and gold-tipped platform Mary Janes.
