Kevin Carrigan Introduces Minimalist Looks For Calvin Klein and Calvin Klein Jeans Fall 2010

Kevin Carrigan presented a collection of what he called "tough chic looks" for Calvin Klein men's and women's apparel, jeans, and accessories lines this morning in New York. Models stood tall on high platforms showing off fall essentials like denim-on-denim and black-on-black. The look was streamlined and urban-stretch stirrup pants, cashmere capes, and sheath dresses for her and slim-fitting, one button suits for him. In the denim category, Carrigan rolled out the Calvin Klein X jean, featuring skinny silhouettes (for men and women) accented with gold buttons and available in antiqued gold, indigo, and black. Adding into the mix newly launched lingerie label, Envy, and the leather accessories presented today, Calvin Klein will be a one stop shop for sleek, minimalist looks come fall.

For the spring 2010 Calvin Klein jeans, swimwear, underwear and accessories collection, creative director Kevin Carrigan kept it clean and simple. The focus was on denim and American sportswear-the former bleached white and used in slim jeans with ankle zips and micro shorts, the latter in the form of chambray blazers and tie-dye shirt dresses.

Are Top Designers Shying Away From Awards Shows?

>> In the Golden Globes aftermath, Cathy Horyn was left less than impressed. "The new decade certainly didn’t announce itself with a bang on the Globes red carpet last night, and it had nothing to do with the rain," she blogged yesterday. "Where was that single, game-changing dress that people would talk about?"

She continued:

Most of the dresses last night offered little more than a paper-doll variation on styles of the past few years. A preponderance of blush pink or one-shouldered styles doesn’t point to a trend so much as reveal an ongoing problem with mediocre design. Maybe the best designers now prefer to stay away from the awards shows, and the actresses, worried about bad publicity, don’t know the difference anymore. They don’t know what it means in fashion to be playful and truly relaxed. So the dresses keep wearing them.

"Pornographic" Calvin Klein Jeans Billboard Replaced, Doutzen Kroes Celebrates

>> Calvin Klein - no stranger to pornographic epithets when it comes to their advertising - stirred up a little scandal last week when a still from the steamy Spring 2009 Calvin Klein Jeans commercial shot by Steven Meisel - which has been banned from US television - appeared on a Soho billboard in New York.

The image depicts what could be interpreted as a threesome - but Francisco Costa didn't see anything wrong with it last week at the CFDA Awards: “Please! It’s so, like, old news. Don’t you think we should be a little ashamed for even having to discuss? I mean, it’s great for us. So if you want to talk about it, let’s talk about it. But there was no intention of making that controversial . . . It’s New York City! It’s the 21st century! Honey, we have to move on!"

Calvin Klein menswear designer Italo Zucchelli, too, agreed: "It's my favorite campaign ever!" But it appears that the two designers don't have the final word on their billboards: Yesterday, the image was replaced with a shot of Doutzen Kroes in a red bikini. At least one person was happy with the change - Doutzen went by the new billboard last night, took a picture of herself jumping in front of it, and posted it on Twitter: "BELIEVE IT!!!!!"

Calvin Klein Brings Back Steamy Jeans Commercials

>> It's been a few years since Brooke Shields told us that nothing comes between her and her Calvins - almost two decades. Not since the early '80s, when those Calvin Klein Jeans commercials were running, has the brand tried to top them.

Enter 2009, the year the label finally gives it another go, with a grainy Steven Meisel-shot commercial featuring Anna Selezneva, Anna Maria Jagodzinska, and Natasha Poly greased up and writhing in nothing but their Calvins. The ads have already been banned from even late-night cable TV - nothing CK isn't used to, since the same thing happened last year with their Eva Mendes Secret Obsession commercial - but they plan on having this one actually make it on TV in the US. An edited version will air on American cable, and countries like Italy, France, Spain, and Germany will run the unedited version below.

J Brand to Offer Ready-to-Wear for Spring 2012

>> After testing the waters with Hussein Chalayan and Proenza Schouler collaborations, six-year-old denim company J Brand is set to debut its very own high-end sportswear line for Spring 2012. The 140-piece collection of office-to-evening separates - which will carry the same label as the brand's signature jeans - is priced from $200 to $1,500 and is meant to hang alongside the likes of Isabel Marant and Rag & Bone. "The initiative we set out from the very beginning was to build a fashion brand," CEO Jeff Rudes told WWD.

With a palette of understated solids - lilac, black, grey - the line is also primarily absent of the material that made the brand famous; instead, newly-hired design director Donald Oliver (who has stints at Vera Wang and Calvin Klein under his belt) has elected to use fabrics such as silk chiffon and lambskin. "We paid a lot of attention to details, making the garment feel special to the wearer," Oliver said, adding of the intended customer: "We wanted her to be easygoing, uncomplicated, subtly sophisticated. We wanted her to feel relevant, not trendy, not like she’s trying too hard, which is why I think the garments have an ease about them."

Though only 60 of the company's 2,500 retail doors will offer the line in the first season, the launch is just the first in a series of planned expansions for the brand over the next few years; accessories, menswear, and flagship stores in 6 cities are also in the works.
