Lara Stone Lands Calvin Klein Exclusive

Following in the footsteps of Christy Turlington, Kate Moss, and Natalia Vodianoa (the most recent face of Calvin Klein from 2003 to 2007), 27-year-old Lara Stone has landed one of the world's most coveted modeling gigs-as exclusive face of Calvin Klein. The deal marks the first time the house has selected one model to represent three brands (Calvin Klein Collection, ck Calvin Klein and Calvin Klein Jeans).

No stranger to working for the creatives at Calvin Klein, Stone walked exclusively in the spring 2007 collection show and appeared in fall 2007 Calvin Klein Jeans and fall 2008 ck Calvin Klein Beauty campaigns. “I have a long history with the Calvin Klein brand, and so it was wonderful to work with the house again this year,” said Stone. “It’s like being part of a family.”

Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott photographed the fall women's collection campaign (at left) with the minimalist quality of Nineties Calvin Klein. The pair also shot the jeans campaign in which Stone appears with other models, and Fabien Baron photographed Stone for the ck Calvin Klein campaign with Abby Lee Kershaw.

Calvin Klein Collection Fall 08 Ad Campaign

The Fall 08 Calvin Klein Collection ad campaign stopped us in our tracks. We picked up the heavy September editions of the glossies last weekend. We had a coffee, we turned each page slowly, digesting each spread how it articulated (or shattered) our impressions of the collections from Fall 08. We know these campaigns have turned up in previous editions of the glossies but, we will be honest, September is the only month we really indulge in opening the books. That said, we felt that the Prada campaign did not make the impact we were hoping for. The department stores, by and large, butchered the clothing they shot. And Klein, by far, made the most impact. The Fall 08 collection was sharp and androgynous, it was just what we would have expected but dark and brooding and appropriate for the mood of Fall 08 (which commented on our economic climate). And the ads, their graphic quality, epitomized 'modern' dressing. We're happy to see that Balenciaga isn't the only brand who knows how to evoke this sentiment. If the collection pivots on silhouette, then the ads, we think, should follow suit (no pun intended). 2008 CFDA Winners Announced, Francisco Costa Takes Womenswear Award

>> This evening, the 2008 winners of the highly influential CFDA Awards were named. Three-time Swarovski Award for Womenswear nominees Rodarte finally took home the statuette, and Tom Ford won out in the battle of the T(h)oms. I've denoted the full list of winners in bold — congrats all around!

See Lara Stone's New Calvin Klein Collection TV Commercial

>> For the first time ever, Calvin Klein Collection is getting its own TV commercial - a rarity for designer collections - and Calvin Klein face Lara Stone stars in it, alongside Tyson Ballou. There are 15-, 30-, 60- and 90-second spots, directed by Fabien Baron and filmed in La Jolla, California, which will be unveiled on television during pre-Golden Globes red carpet coverage on Sunday, run through the live Globe awards broadcast, and then continue to be shown after the awards in 200 additional times.

And it seems that this commercial has legs - Calvin Klein CEO and president Tom Murry expects the clip to be usable well past the Spring 2011 season: “We feel it has a fairly extensive shelf life and we can run it again this year, or next year. This is iconic Calvin product. We can run it in Milan or in Tokyo, or around a store-opening event, for instance. It really has multiple usages.”

>> Some of Calvin Klein's most recent memorable red carpet moments have involved vivid colors or metallic sheen, but neither were present in Francisco Costa's Resort 2012 collection, which is instead washed in a sea of white, black, navy, and icy gray. Monochrome the collection may be, but not monotonous: the finale halter dresses earned more than a few fans as the models clomped by in their white-soled sandal flatforms.

Altuzarra Takes Home the Big Prize at the 2011 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards

>> Last night at Skylight studios in New York, the 2011 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winners were announced. Joseph Altuzarra, a favorite the past two years running, took home this year's prize - $300,000 and a year-long mentorship. But the impact of the award lasts much longer than a year, CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg explained: "Once you are in the Fashion Fund, we will protect you and continue to provide you with opportunities.” Pamela Love and Creature of the Wind's Shane Gabier and Christopher Peters were named runners-up, collecting $100,000 each.

Calvin Klein gave this year's keynote speech, focusing on his own days as a young designer. “I started out with less money than probably all of you nominees tonight,” he told the crowd. Of coming up in the '60s and ’70s, he noted: “I dealt with truck men, unions, and gangsters. I got a call from the Gambinos one day, telling me, ‘We are your truck men.’”

Altuzarra's friend and the 2008 Fashion Fund winner, Alexander Wang, told him to "just zone out" during Klein's speech, and just before Rooney Mara announced Altuzarra as winner, von Furstenberg went over to the designer's table, pinched his cheek, and asked him something in French. “She asked me if I went to pee,” Altuzarra told The New York Times. When the announcement finally came, Altuzarra told the audience, “I’m so grateful and humbled.” Love, while accepting her award, announced: “I didn’t prepare anything because I didn’t expect this - and I’m shaking!” before running backstage to hug her fiancé, Matthew Nelson. And Gabier said to the crowd, “You’ve made us really happy and we hope to make you really proud.”

Lara Stone Breaks Calvin Klein Exclusive with New Tom Ford Beauty Campaign

>> Lara Stone, who landed a Calvin Klein exclusive a year ago and is still making appearances on behalf of the brand - just two days ago she wore Calvin Klein at a CK one-sponsored event in Berlin - doesn't seem to be an exclusive for the brand any more. She's appearing alongside Tom Ford in the campaign for his new beauty collection - which is Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott-lensed, instead of photographed by Ford or Terry Richardson as the designer's campaigns have been in the past.
