Preview Karl Lagerfeld's Pirelli 2011 Calendar with Erin Wasson, Baptiste Giabiconi, and More (NSFW)

>> For the 2011 Pirelli calendar, which launched in Moscow today, Karl Lagerfeld said that he produced “the visual version of Homer. I did with my camera what he did with his pen, although we understand that he probably didn't use a pen.” Lagerfeld gathered 15 female models, 5 male models, and Julianne Moore in his Paris studio back in April to produce 36 black and white images of deities from ancient Greece and Rome for the calendar. “I wanted to do something different. I looked at all the other calendars,” he explained, adding: “With such a concept and boys and girls like this, it was an easy job.”

Lagerfeld was surrounded by a cadre of the models featured for the Moscow launch, including Natasha Poly sporting a new brunette hair color. But who did he cast as whom? Julianne Moore plays Hera, Brad Kroenig poses as Zeus, Lara Stone gives her best Aphrodite, Jeneil Williams channels Hades, and Baptiste Giabiconi embodies the roles of both Narcissus and Apollo.

The rest of the cast includes: Bianca Balti (as a Bacchante), Elisa Sednaoui (Flora, Echo), Freja Beha Erichsen (Apollo, Pollux, Orpheus), Isabeli Fontana (a Bacchante), Magdalena Frackowiak (Athena, Estia), Anja Rubik (Hermes, Terpsichore), Abbey Lee Kershaw (Echo, Castor, Eurydice), Lakshmi Menon (a Bacchante), Heidi Mount (Aurora, Amphitrite), Erin Wasson (Ajax, a Bacchante), Natasha Poly (Melpomene), Daria Werbowy (Artemis, Penthesilea), Iris Strubegger (Athena), Sebastien Jondeau (Mars), Garret Neff (Bacchus), and Jake Davis (Achilles).

Edita Vilkeviciute Gets Into Chanel for Karl's First Film

>> Tom Ford is currently filming his directorial debut, and Wednesday, Karl Lagerfeld will show his own directorial debut, based on Coco Chanel's early years. Unlike Tom's feature film, Karl's film is only ten minutes - a length more fitting to kick off the showing of Chanel's Paris-Moscow collection in Paris. The presentation was originally supposed to take place in Moscow, but Karl changed his mind after Russian customs "wanted to have the clothes three weeks in advance, which means we wouldn't have been ready and the situation seemed risky, so we cancelled."

Shot in a Paris studio in two days, Karl's film is inspired by Mack Sennett's flickering black-and-white silent slapstick movies with "spliced in newsreel footage of WWI because I think it's interesting to juxtapose fashion with the horrible images of the trenches." Rather than cast extras - "they don't know how to touch the clothes" - Karl looked within his own posse to fill positions - muse Amanda Harlech and daughter Tallulah Ormsby-Gore as customer and model, Brad Kroenig as Chanel lover Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich, and bodyguard Sebastien Jondeau as a Russian general. For the role of Chanel, Karl went with Lithuanian model Edita Vilkeviciute - in character in the film stills below.

The presentation Dec. 3 - in Paris at the Theatre du Ranelagh, not in Moscow - will open with a "laugh-packed" silent movie, loosely based on Coco Chanel's life between 1913 and 1923. Lagerfeld muses Lady Amanda Harlech, Brad Kroenig, and Tallulah Ormsby-Gore are all involved - Tallulah plays a Chanel model who has to sell her real-life mother, Amanda, a hat. [WWD, WWD]

Chanel Fall 2010: All Faux Fur and Icebergs

>> For the six days leading up to the Chanel Fall 2010 show, Karl Lagerfeld had the thirty-five person team who sculpted The Ice Hotel in Sweden brought in to carve a 265-ton iceberg, also imported from Sweden, in the middle of the Grand Palais. The room was chilled to 25 degrees Fahrenheit, and the iceberg was hidden from the audience under a large wooden box that mechanically rose when the show started.

Four models - Brad Kroenig, Baptiste Giabiconi, Abbey Lee Kershaw, and Freja Beha Erichsen (the latter two who are reportedly set to appear in the Chanel Fall 2010 campaign) - in furry yeti suits opened the display, "milling about in a daze" before dispersing, and giving way to a train of models sloshing through water from the melting iceberg; some even left shoes which came loose behind in their wake.

“Global warming is the issue of our times. Fashion has to address it,” Lagerfeld said afterward. And fur was everywhere - boots, skirts, pants, bags - but all faux. Karl said he went with faux fur for two reasons: first, Fendi does the best real furs and he doesn't want to compete, and second: “Technical advances are so perfect you can hardly tell fake fur from the real thing. Fake is not chic - we have got a new Chanel tweed to stop copies - but fake fur is.”

Jerry Hall Brings It Back for Chanel Handbags

>> The heyday hasn't slowed down for models pushing forty this season - Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Christy Turlington - and now a couple of fifty-something models are issuing something of a comeback. First, 51-year-old Ines de la Fressange took the Jean Paul Gaultier couture runway a couple of weeks ago, and now 52-year-old Jerry Hall is mugging for (and replacing Christy Turlington in) Chanel's handbag campaign, along with Baptiste Giabiconi, who seems to have replaced Brad Kroenig as Karl Lagerfeld's male model of choice.

Karl picked Jerry to shoot because, as "Oscar Wilde said, 'I like men who have a future, and women who have a past.' It is this whole idea of seduction that is summarised here that appeals to me. One of a very young man fascinated and attracted by what a woman does: her wardrobe, her perfume, her movements, her allure, etc." And to imagine, he's known Jerry since she was 15 . . .

Karl Lagerfeld Makes Himself at Home in Vermont

>> Karl Lagerfeld has landed in Vermont to shoot the Chanel campaign, and the local news picked up on it. They captured the house in Grand Isle Karl dropped less than a million on, the designer checking the place out with Brad Kroenig in tow, and then give you a good closeup of Karl's new duck-hunting neighbor, Loomis Bean. So far, Karl's been friendly with the locals - the caterer who is working his four-day Chanel photoshoot says he was "very nice," but "spent most of the time in the house . . . he really just dashed in and dashed out."

Karl Lagerfeld recently dedicated an entire book to photos of Brad Kroenig, and now photographer Paolo Roversi is showing an entire exhibit of work produced with his muse of 12 years, Guinevere van Seenus. The two met through Guinevere's agent when she had just started working in Paris, and they still collaborate to this day - the duo just shot a story for W.

She both opened and closed the Chanel Cruise 2009 show last night, and Karl photographed her along with his favorite Brad Kroenig in the collection against the Miami sunset. No word on whether the photos are for the lookbook, an editorial, or an ad campaign, but regardless, Sasha's got the grace of the Lagerfeld.
