Maybe he's going to ride out his contract until October, after all? But it another fashion fixture who was on everyone's minds last night - Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, making her first appearance at a fashion event and breaking her usual ties with Dior by wearing Yves Saint Laurent as the guest of Pierre Berge.

Hundreds Turn Out To Mourn at Yves Saint Laurent's Funeral

>> Over 800 mourners paid tribute to Yves Saint Laurent, who passed away on Sunday after a year-long battle with brain cancer.

Applause erupted from the hundreds of onlookers as the designer's coffin was carried into the Eglise Saint-Roch for the funeral mass. A string quartet played as invited guests took their seats in a church decorated with jasmine and white lilies.

During services, former YSL muse Catherine Deneuve, visibly moved, gave a reading from a Walt Whitman poem, followed by a eulogy from Pierre Berge, Saint Laurent's former lover and long-time business partner: "He turned fashion on its head, making it socially relevant rather than merely aesthetic. With Saint Laurent, women ceased being merely clothes-horses or the objects of designer fantasies."

As expected, a number of fashion figures attended - John Galliano, Christian Lacroix, Claudia Schiffer, Laetitia Casta - but noticeably absent was rival Karl Lagerfeld, who according to a Chanel spokesperson was "away on business." Most of the women attendees were dressed in pants suits, in tribute to the designer's reputation as the man who put women in pants.

Yves Saint Laurent's body will be cremated and then scattered in the Majorelle Gardens in Morocco, where he spent much of his life. A short video of the services is here.

Yves Saint Laurent's Funeral Plans Made, Cause of Death Revealed

>> In the aftermath of Yves Saint Laurent's death Sunday evening, funeral services have been scheduled for Thursday afternoon, 3:30 pm, at the Eglise Saint-Roch in Paris. Afterward, YSL will be incinerated, and his ashes will lay in his Majorelle Garden in his beloved Marrakech.

Although details surrounding cause of death were not originally released, it has now been confirmed that M. Saint Laurent was suffering from brain cancer, which he was diagnosed with in April 2007. Lifelong business partner Pierre Berge and muse Betty Catroux were present at the time of death, and Catherine Deneuve arrived soon after.

Yves Saint Laurent Passes Away at 71

>> Legendary couturier Yves Saint Laurent passed away Sunday evening at his home following a long battle with brain cancer, joined in his final moments by his longtime business partner Pierre Berge and muse Betty Catroux.

Although it is well-known that he has been in ill health for a while now — he had been bedridden recently and was admitted to a Paris hospital last week in a coma — the death still comes as a shock, especially because it marks the end of a generation that made Paris the fashion capital of the world.

Thank you, M. Saint Laurent, for all of your contributions, including Le Smoking, the trapeze dress, and safari jackets, and rest in peace.

Yves Saint Laurent Documentary L'Amour Fou, With Rare Footage, to Be Released Next Year

IFC Films just announced its acquisition of the French documentary Yves Saint Laurent L'Amour Fou, which it will release in 2011. The film chronicles the Story of Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge all the way through Berge's decision to sell their multimillion dollar private art collection upon the designer's death, through rare archives and exclusive images - some of which can be seen here. Berge and Saint Laurent muses, Betty Catroux and Loulou de la Falaise, were all interviewed for the film - the trailer for which is above.

Have people finally had it with front-row celebrities and the inevitable delays and other hassles they cause? One designer, whose show is among the most coveted and hard-to-come-by invites of the week, is considering declining a request for tickets from fashion week's most omnipresent (and, thanks to her bulked-up bodyguards, most exasperating) celeb, Janet Jackson.

My guess? McQueen. And I love him for that. Especially because Janet took Hilary Alexander's front row seat at YSL.

The whole of the celebrity hijinks, as WWD tells it:

The celebrity scene at Yves Saint Laurent Thursday evening became a bit little untidy as expected guests Katie Holmes and Victoria Beckham were nowhere to be seen just as the show was ready to get under way. It was then that a late-arriving Lenny Kravitz was ushered to the seats destined for the two stars. Just as the lights dimmed and the music kicked in, Janet Jackson and her posse suddenly rambled in to find their seats already filled. Not to worry, The Daily Telegraph's fashion scribe, Hilary Alexander, sacrificed her seat to the songstress. But that wasn't the end. Ten minutes into the show, Holmes and Beckham arrived together. They had to stand for awhile, but eventually seats were found for the two late arrivals. The more punctual glitterati include Kanye West, Catherine Deneuve, Betty Catroux and Pierre Bergé.

Sad that the real YSL VIPs -- Deneuve, Catroux, and Berge -- can all make it on time, but the other self-important VIPs cannot.
