Self Service, LOVE Previews: The Latter Goes with "New Blood" for Second Issue

>> Last week we had a first peek at the inaugural issue of POP, rebooted with Dasha Zhukova at the helm, and now, courtesy of an ad run in the just-released September 2009 issue of Vogue UK (with Kate Moss on the cover), we have a little preview at the second issue of Katie Grand's new baby, LOVE.

They took the same tactic for the first issue - so the image at left isn't the cover, but rather from an editorial within - but the theme seems to be "New Blood: The Young and the Reckless," with some inclusions listed that have been raising eyebrows - Miley Cyrus and The Jonas Brothers, for instance. Also making the teaser: 13 year-old Style Rookie blogger Tavi.

Norma Kamali has a new web-based marketing strategy which utilizes Twitter, Skype, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter to promote sales.

Indian model Lakshmi Menon spoke in a recent interview about the lack of Indian and South Asian models in the industry.

Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Azzaro and Chanel are plotting pop-up stores in the Hamptons, Tokyo, Southern France, and Moscow respectively.

The June issue of W magazine includes a 30-page editorial by Craig McDean featuring the season's best new faces.

Tom Ford opened his first stand alone store in Milan yesterday. Much excitement over the venture was expressed by the fashion press. "It's more contemporary than New York, which is in a 1930s building," he said during a walk-through. "We used the same vocabulary and colors, but this one is housed in a Fascist building so it's more linear and modern."Measuring nearly 12,000 square feet over five floors, its Ford's largest store to date. Liz Claiborne is working on a new logo and ad campaign for the spring launch of Liz Claiborne-brand women's clothing under creative director Isaac Mizrahi. No one is saying anything and naturally the whole thing is quite tight lipped. As big fans of Isaac Mizrahi we are certainly hoping for the best for the designer and his new label. Jemima Khan, daughter of Lady Annabel Vane-Tempest-Stewart and the late tycoon Sir James Goldsmith, has designed a capsule collection for Paris fashion house Azzaro which will include ready-to-wear and accessories. It will be presented in the showroom during the Paris couture. accessories line. Jimmy Choo is going to Japan with a new Ginza location. The 1,700-square-foot store will be set over two floors, with a mirrored staircase leading to a salon space on the second floor. The unit will carry the brand's handbags, leather goods and sunglasses, along with its most complete selection of shoe styles in its stores in Japan.

Among those who gathered at the fete, held inside the London landmark Aspley House: Kate Hudson (in coral Elie Saab) and her fiance Matt Bellamy; Bono and Ali Hewson (in Edun); Tom Ford in a velvet suit; Kate Moss (in an Azzaro jumpsuit); and her father Paul McCartney and his fiancee Nancy Shevell. Gwyneth Paltrow, too, joined the festivities - which included an after-party at the Groucho Club in Soho - and was later spotted leaving with two mugs, printed with photographs of McCartney as a baby.

the hauteur of couture

>> The Wall Street Journal ran an interesting article on the state of haute couture today - and it was not the stock "couture is dying/dead" article.

Well, I take it back, there was a little bit of that, but the writer, Christina Binkley, took an angle that hasn't been covered over and over before. She interviewed Didier Grumbach, the president of the Fédération Française de la Couture, who had some decidedly interesting things to say.

I, for one, was surprised at how readily M. Grumbach shrugged and admitted that at lot of what is shown during the couture shows is ready-to-wear - considering the strict rules of couture that his organization exists to enforce (all clothes are made by hand from a pattern customized to the buyer in a Parisian atelier employing at least 20 seamstresses).

But the best part of the article?

Today, designers Nicolas Ghesquière of Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, and Vanessa Seward of Azzaro all have the haute couture "savoir faire," Mr. Grumbach said, wishing they would apply to join the federation. "We are snobbish -- they must ask," he noted.

There's that French fashion hauteur I know and love. Too bad Azzaro's chief executive said she has no interest in doing couture and Nicolas recently echoed the same sentiment.
