Andre Leon Talley's Milan Mishap

>> Milan is not good to Andre Leon Talley. Two years ago, his luggage was lost for three days during Milan Fashion Week, and he was stuck wearing the same blue Patent Miu Miu coat and velour track pants to the shows. Fast forward to today, and it's the same deal with Milan Fashion Week. His luggage was lost, and he had to wear the same Juicy Couture shorts and gray Ralph Lauren polo shirt to D&G this morning that he wore on the plane.

But ALT isn't the only one having issues with Milan: A Continental flight out of Newark filled with a bevy of editors - Vogue’s fashion market and accessories director Virginia Smith and senior accessories editor Filipa Fino, W’s fashion director Alex White, and New York magazine’s fashion director Harriet Mays Powell - experienced engine failure and was rerouted to Maine last night. They all made it safely back to Newark, but most are still looking for a new flight to Milan . . .

Cushnie et Ochs Expand Their Offering for Fall 2010

>> Where there's Cushnie et Ochs, there's a runway full off body con minidresses - and Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs did not disappoint. They did, however, show off a more well-rounded collection this season: crinkled leather pants and jackets, an oversized knit cardigan with fox fur sleeves, even a few separates. The duo also had a number of collaborations going this time around: photographer Chadwick Tyler, known for his smudgy, black-and-white pictures of models, held down casting duties, while Albertus Swanepoel produced wrinkled leather helmuts-cum-do-rags and Alejandro Ingelmo cobbled together vertiginous pony hair and velvet wedge boots for the show. Andre Leon Talley sat in for the show, arms crossed, just one seat down from J. Alexander, who he's replacing as judge on America's Next Top Model, and Alexandra Richards, all in black, fit well in the cavernous show setting.

The Fashion World Reacts to Alexander McQueen's Death

>> The news of Alexander McQueen's death hung like a dark cloud over the Fashion Week events today. The McQueen store down the street from Milk Studios in Manhattan, where a number of shows were held today, had its windows covered with white paper; a placard left on the ground outside. Passersby left flowers and notes in a makeshift memorial out front. Barneys, too, changed out its windows in tribute to McQueen - the store sold over 500 McQueen scarves today.

This morning at the BCBG show, just as the news broke, Anna Wintour left before the show's finale. The Ports 1961 show held a moment of silence in honor of McQueen, Cushnie et Ochs included a tribute note in their show's program, and at the LnA after party this evening, Patti Smith dedicated her performance to the designer.

Kate Moss, who was scheduled to hold a launch party for her Longchamp collection in London, postponed the event to mourn her friend. More changes to the calendar may be made: The Cut is reporting that editors might leave New York Fashion Week early for London in light of McQueen's death.

On Twitter, there was an outpouring of grief from the industry, collected below. T's Stefano Tonchi told The Cut he partially blames the rapidly increasing speed of the fashion system for McQueen's suicide:

We all know that this is a very critical moment in fashion, and that basically he is the first victim of what is a conflict between creativity and business. Today to be a fashion designer, you have to be a superman or superwoman. You have to have nerves of steel. You have to be so strong. And if you are a little bit weak, if you have psychological problems or weakness, you end up like him.” When McQueen began in fashion, designers worked on two or three collections a year, said Tonchi. “Now you have to be a business manager, a marketer. It’s, what? Eight, ten, fifteen collections a year. Men’s, women’s, couture, diffusion. Then they want accessories. Then they want watches. Then they want jewelry. It’s a machine, and I think that killed him.

Katie Grand Rolls Her Eyes at the Prospect of Replacing Alexandra Shulman at British Vogue

>> The second edition of LOVE comes out next week, and even though she just recently got married, editor-in-chief Katie Grand didn't have time for a honeymoon because she had to finish the issue. Katie is somewhat the antithesis of Anna Wintour in the so-called glamorous world of fashion: she doesn't feel the need to have every hair in place and she doesn't mandate high heels, like Vogue supposedly does.

“I’m really practical,” she recently told the Times UK. “I go to the gym most mornings and I walk everywhere, so that’s why I wear flat shoes and no make-up. It’s not vanity; it’s laziness. I didn’t wear make-up on my wedding day because I didn’t want mascara running down my face if I cried.” Also missing from the wedding? The traditional white dress. “I wore an Azzedine Alaïa brown snakeskin dress, which he tortured me for about two months to get into, but at least it’s something I can wear again. I didn’t want some stupid white dress; it seems like such a waste."

Anna Larson's Spring 2010 Debut Erro Collection Sticks to Shades of Gray, But Is Hardly Boring

>> Housed within the confines of the small Ohio Theater tonight were models on boxes, sporting Doc Martens and Anna Larson's debut Erro collection. Larson's target girl is a "modern nomad," and she embodies Erro, which means "stray" in Latin, through easy-to-wear, layerable pieces in white and shades of gray.

Bliss Lau contributed jewelry and her leather treatment skills to the Spring 2010 collection - the lambskin was crocheted, hand-distressed, and perforated; former Eventide designer and current stylist Christian Stroble consulted and styled; and Alexandra Richards was hidden above the crowd in the back, mixing the soundtrack. The pieces were visibly made of high-quality materials - always good for first impressions from a new designer - and the whole sensibility was mirrored by Larson herself, who was spotted chatting to Vogue's Mark Holgate sporting all black, goth-girl black hair, and heavy black eyeliner.

A breakdown of the staff's dress of choice, by the colors:

So, it would seem the reports are true, except that Beauty Director Sarah Brown wore a less-than-pale Giles dress, Senior Market Editor Meredith Melling Burke wore a dark-colored gown, Senior Accessories Editor Filipa Fino went with navy, and both Executive Fashion Editor Phyllis Posnick and Creative Director Grace Coddington went with black.

Hmmm . . . The score is 10 for, 5 against . . . but it does seem like there are an awful lot of light colors for the missive to not have happened. Maybe Anna just requested staff to go light or dark, no brights?
