2009 CFDA Award Nominees Announced

>> The 2009 CFDA Award nominees have just been announced, and Marc Jacobs has already won an award - the International Award for his work at Louis Vuitton (he's nominated in two more categories). Last year's Swarovski Award winners, Rodarte and Band of Outsiders, have both been bumped up to compete in the respective major league categories, and 2008 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund contenders Albertus Q. Swanepoel, Alejandro Ingelmo, and Jason Wu have all entered the Swarovski Award ring this year.

We'll have to wait until June 15 to see who wins what, but the ceremony might mark fashion's first Michelle Obama event appearance - she's being honored with this year's Board of Director's Special Tribute for her style choices and penchant for up-and-coming talent.

Wang Wins 2008 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund

>> For its fifth anniversary, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund went with the obvious choice, naming Alexander Wang the recipient of $200,000 plus a year of mentoring last night. Vogue favorite Vena Cava and a less expected choice, milliner Albertus Swanepoel of Albertus Quartus, were both named runners-up and will receive $50,000 plus a business mentor. The night's keynote speaker, John Galliano, and his date Charlize Theron were seated next to Anna Wintour and presented the top honors to a teary-eyed Alexander Wang, who said his thank yous onstage as John Galliano rubbed his arm in comfort.

Top hats seemed to be the order of the evening - Julie Gilhart and John Galliano each sported one, the latter with a daisy chain, and Agyness Deyn had on a squished version - while carrot pants and one-shouldered dresses also received numerous nods. Plenty of models are already back in town from the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show: Anne Vyalitsyna came with Costello Tagliapietra, Maryna Linchuk with Rag & Bone, Doutzen Kroes with Irene Neuwirth, and Arlenis Sosa Pena with Rogan.

Last night, Alexander Wang was awarded the CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund award, granting him a 200,000 dollar allowance and mentorship for one year. The designers of Vena Cava and Albertus Quartus were the runners up and the two brands were each awarded 50,000 dollars and a business mentor. To see photos from last night's event, click here. A 1980's themed Reebok pop-up has opened on the Bowery in honor of the 20th anniversary of the Reebok pump. Limited edition sneakers will run Reebok fans a mere 90 dollars--not much compared to the competition.

Burberry reports a 13.1 percent increase in profits this half, however, the company articulates their concerns that there is worse to come. Burberry stated that U.S. department stores have unexpectedly decreased their re-orders.

Suzy Menkes reports on the new Yohji Yamamoto flagship recently opened in Paris and the cultivation of a new pocket of cutting edge boutiques in the area.

Jason Wu, Alexander Wang, Vena Cava Among 2008 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Nominees

>> The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund has determined its ten finalists for 2008.

Last year's winner, Rogan Gregory, was announced in November and received a monetary award of $200,000, with two runners-up reiving $50,000 each. For the past couple of years, the nominees have worked with Gap as part of a limited Gap Design Edition collaboration to gain more exposure, and many have also gone on to work with Target in limited-edition runs.
