Tim Blanks Says Street Style "Makes Monsters"

Turns out Suzy Menkes isn't the only person with thoughts about all the bloggers and street-style stars armed with cameras outside fashion shows.

Turns out Suzy Menkes isn't the only person with thoughts about all the bloggers and street-style stars armed with cameras outside fashion shows. In Take My Picture, a new minidocumentary created by Garage Magazine, a variety of people in the fashion industry — from critics and stylists to designers and even bloggers themselves — address the phenomenon.

Tim Blanks is perhaps the most vocal person in the video, even though he says he initially found it "charming . . . for so many different kinds of people to be so enthusiastic about fashion." Now, he's just had enough.

"It's empowering, but it's empowering in the way that reality TV has been empowering," Blanks says in the video. "It makes monsters. It doesn't make gods; it makes monsters. It's coarsened, but that's always the process, isn't it — with everything? You can't think of any leap forward that didn't at some point become a parody of itself. But then what happens next?"

And while some of the people in the video agree that the throngs of people outside shows have gotten to be a little too much, others defend street-style photography and the growth of blogging as having redeeming qualities.

"Of course now it's one of the strategies," says Vika Gazinskaya, an oft-snapped Russian designer who first started showing her brand in 2007. "And as I always say, it's a great opportunity for young designers who have no budget for advertising. It's the best way, of course."

A look at what others from the industry, including Tommy Ton, Susanna Lau, Phil Oh, and Hanneli Mustaparta had to say on the matter in the video below.

Bloggers

Tommy Ton: Magazine Editors Look Down on Bloggers

Do magazine editors really have that much disdain for people who got famous online?

Do magazine editors really have that much disdain for people who got famous online? Tommy Ton thinks they do.

"You can sense it when you're going to the shows," Ton said in an interview with The Talks. "You feel like they belittle you in a way. Not intentionally, but you can feel like they're thinking, 'Oh, you've cheated the system. I don't feel like you earned your spot here sitting in the show.' Maybe that's just me being a bit more insecure. And if I still feel that way in my position I can only imagine what a new blogger feels like coming into this."

Ton added that even famous denizens of the Internet take flak for not having risen through the ranks at traditional publications.

"There are negative connotations to being a blogger," he said. "Regardless of whatever success you've had, when you meet someone they are like, 'Oh, you're that blogger!' And I'm like, 'Yes, that's me, the blogger.' It's a very belittling or demeaning term in some ways. But I think it's also great that there are people like [BryanBoy] who are very comfortable and secure with themselves. He's like, 'Yes, I'm the blogger. And I'm also on America's Next Top Model. What are you going to say about that?'"

Haute Vote: Fashion Folks Hit the Polls

If our Twitter feed proved anything today, it's that Anna Wintour and André Leon Talley aren't the only politicos in the fashion world.
Fashion Instagrams From Election 2012

If our Twitter feed proved anything today, it's that Anna Wintour and André Leon Talley aren't the only politicos in the fashion world. Terry Richardson, Kelly Mittendorf, Jeremy Scott, and Joe Zee were among those who not only hit the polls but also used their social media pull to get out the vote. While we'll leave it up to you to figure out who the majority of industry folk probably voted for, we will say this: patriotism is always in style.

  • A newspaper in Thailand reported that the country is getting its very own edition of Vogue, hot on the heels of the new edition that just launched in the Netherlands. If the story is to be believed, current Elle Thailand editor Kullawit Laosuksri would be the new magazine's editor-in-chief. He'd also be the only man in the all-women Vogue editors-in-chief club. • Mulberry decided to release its new Del Rey handbag, named after singer Lana Del Rey, a few weeks early. Its flagship stores in New York, London, and Singapore started carrying the bag today — Del Rey herself has had one since February — but the rest of the world will have until May to purchase the $1,250 bag. [Fashion Etc.]

  • Singer Adam Levine wasn't debriefed before his supermodel ex-girlfriend Anne Vyalitsyna told the world they'd broken up. A friend of his says he was "blindsided" by reports last week that the two were no longer an item, and that Vyalitsyna was eager to avoid the impression that she was the one who got dumped. [The Cut]

  • Stylist Stevie Dance has started her own shopping-focused blog called Shop Ghost, which promises stories "about how subcultures create shopping trends, how we invest in ourselves, how we stalk ideas online, what we buy but never wear, what we want to recommend and why." Case in point: Shop Ghost launched with a story about shopaholic photographer Tommy Ton, who says he wants to start designing clothes within the next five years. [Shop Ghost]

    >> Starting today, fans of Jason Wu can now shop a selection of the designer's Spring and Pre-Fall handbags — including a few exclusive styles — on the newly re-launched JasonWuStudio.com.  Visitors can also click a little deeper into the Wu world: A "Craftsmanship" section explores his workmanship and garment construction, while the "Collections" section offers video, lookbooks, behind-the-scenes images, and exclusive image collaborations done just for the site. The most recent of these special shoots? Tommy Ton snapped Tati Cotliar in Wu's Fall 2011 collection on the streets of New York. “It’s actually my favorite collection of his, so I’m very honored to be shooting this particular collection in the way that I do, on a girl like Tati who wears clothes so well,” Ton says of the shoot.

Christophe Decarnin Was a No-Show at Balmain; Carine Roitfeld Attends Balenciaga

    >> Christophe Decarnin showed a new, more "subdued" Balmain collection, according to Cathy Horyn, today for Fall 2011 — which could be in part because Emmanuelle Alt is no longer the show's stylist and Melanie Ward took her place this season.

But more curious: Decarnin skipped his final bow and was a no-show backstage. "He's tired after working on the collection. He's not here. He's resting," said a Balmain spokesman. And it seems that Nicolas Ghesquiere and Carine Roitfeld have officially made up — she attended the show today, Tommy Ton tweets: "Just spotted Carine leaving Balenciaga slyly avoiding the paps." The First Full Pictures of Thom Browne's Newly-Launched Women's Collection for Spring 2011

    >> Thom Browne announced earlier this year that he's making an official foray into womenswear: “I want to develop it the same way men’s developed — small at first, and evolving slowly.” Which means that his Spring 2011 collection — the first full pictures of which have just surfaced — debuted under the radar, save for the closeups Tommy Ton posted at the beginning of the month.

The collection is just as Browne promised: “It’s very focused on jackets and trousers and outerwear. I think it’s what people expect from me, very men’s-inspired women’s clothing. Gray flannel, navy cashmere. Good, all-American men’s wear influence, but fitting in a cool feminine way. I want it to be very understandable. Personally, when I see it on the girls I think it looks so good. I like the idea of men’s tailoring on girls. It’s very strong and sexy in a nonovert way.”

Browne's plan is to have his womenswear become "a fully developed collection . . . in the next couple seasons.” And he's already got a full runway show planned during New York Fashion Week in February for Fall 2011.

The resultant photos, coupled with some of her ten-rule lists, which are becoming a signature on her blog — the latest is about wearing headpieces, with tips like "Don't wear hats everyday!
