Balenciaga Pre-Fall 2009: A Taste of What's To Come

>> With most pre-collections, hints of what to come from the designer are there, but with Nicholas Ghesquiere, it's especially prevalent — the woven leather gladiator boots and a black-and-white floral print hit Resort 2008 before going full-fledged in the Spring 2008 Balenciaga collection, and very similar black-and-white dresses appeared in the Pre-Fall 2008 collection before hitting the runway for Fall 2008.  Ghesquiere confirmed yesterday that the new Pre-Fall 2009 collection was a good indication of the direction he was talking for Fall 2009, but for now, we can only guess on which elements will reappear: the zip skirts?  The slouchy pencil pants?  The fur mittens?*image: source

We can already assume that the Fall 2009 collections will be heavy with accessories, especially if the Pre-Fall collections by Proenza Schouler, Balenciaga, and Nina Ricci (pictured left, respectively) are any indication.

We can already assume that the Fall 2009 collections will be heavy with accessories, especially if the Pre-Fall collections by Proenza Schouler, Balenciaga, and Nina Ricci (pictured left, respectively) are any indication. In all three collections gloves pulled their share of the weight, allowing more basic clothing to still appear 'high fashion'. Also contributing were new it-bags, statement shoes, and furs.

In the most recent issue of The Journal Maria Cornejo talked about her newfound excitement for prints and we are delighted to see so many of them in her Pre-Fall 2009 collection. Judging by her statements in the interview and the appearance of print in her Pre-Fall 2009 collection, we can probably expect some great prints from the Fall 2009 collection. That said, all of those fashion gals who depend on Cornejo for their all-black winter uniform will probably still be in good shape--we doubt the designer will abandon her aesthetic completely.

We have to say, we are enchanted by this fresh perspective--as much as we love ourselves a hippie dress in the middle of the summer there is nothing more tempting than DVF clothing gone classic. That eggplant, buttery soft leather bomber on the right? Yeah, that's a good example of what we're talking about.

Although a switch like this seems more appropriate leading into a Spring season, we're happy to see this new side of the brand. If you're in New York, don't forget to check out the infamous Rag & Bone sample sale, which ends today. Better snatch up those structured coats and dark colors--this Fall, who knows, there may not be much of that to go around.
