>> Less than a week before Alexander McQueen shows for Spring 2010 next Tuesday, his Fall 2009 campaign has appeared, featuring Tara Gill shot by David Burton. The effect is much different than that amped-up dramatic show, but at this point we're already looking forward to what's coming on Tuesday — the designer has been busy dropping hints on Twitter like: "Dante's Inferno !!!!!," "TRANSMUTATION," "The Creationist?," "MEDUSA," "NEBULA," "HUBBLE PALLET [sic]," "FULL CIRCLE," and posting a picture to do with the origin of species. Mid-September he Tweeted, "Fashion month has started with banality," so hopefully his collection will help change that.

Christian Dior Decides to Do Without Traditional Ad Campaign for Fall 2009

>> For those holding out for Christian Dior's Fall 2009 campaign — since most other major brands have revealed their seasonal ads at this point — you're setting yourself up for a big disappointment. The brand — which posted a loss in profits last week — decided to forego a traditional ad campaign this season because Dior CEO Sidney Toledano found the formula "wanting," according to WWD.
Instead, the advertising budget — an undisclosed number — was poured into a new set of the Lady Dior handbag campaign featuring Marion Cotillard. The original set, photographed by Peter Lindbergh, started running last November and a new set with Cotillard as "Lady Red," snapped by Annie Leibovitz, has been appearing in magazines starting since the August issues (above). A sequel to Cotillard's short film for the brand, which hit the Internet in May, is planned for December.
Toledano seemed satisfied in May with the brand's move toward using more star power and away from seasonal campaigns that typically feature models: “Now we have to give more meaning. People are looking for iconic products and they want to see a product representing the values of a company.”
Tom Ford Continues to Photograph Own Campaigns for Fall 2009
>> Tom Ford pulled a Karl Lagerfeld last season, not only art directing but photographing his campaigns for the first time, and he's decided to keep up the tradition for Fall 2009. At the time, he told WWD: “I have taken pictures for years, but recently have become more serious about it and have started shooting portraits. I have always felt that an advertising image is in a sense the last layer of the design, and so decided this season to just shoot the campaign myself.“
For men's, he stuck with his campaign regular Jon Kortajarena, who's kind of Tom's equivalent to Karl's Baptiste Giabiconi; as for women's eyewear, Tom photographed Anna Maria Jagodzinska back in May.
>> Linda Evangelista Scores Fall 2009 Galliano Campaign —Linda Evangelista is suddenly everywhere: the August 2009 Vogue Italia cover, the upcoming issue of V magazine; she was photographed last week for W's November 2009 Art issue (and may be in the running for the cover?), and now she's appearing in John Galliano's Fall 2009 campaign. >> Karlie Kloss Snags Alexander McQueen Fall 2009 Campaign, Celebrates 17th Birthday at Disneyland —A preview of Karlie Kloss's impending Fall 2009 Alexander McQueen campaign, styled by Karl Templer, is up on the designer's website; the model celebrated her 17th birthday over the weekend by taking her family, agents, and friends to Disney World; Vogue UK has pictures. >> Steven Meisel, Kristen McMenamy Reteam for Lanvin Fall 2009 —When Steven Meisel reteamed with Kristen McMenamy for the July 2009 Vogue Italia cover and a 31-page editorial called "The Legend," he wasn't done. The pair worked together again for Lanvin's Fall 2009 campaign, the first image of which paints Kristen as a petrified woman, surrounded by black cats. [TFS]

Alberta Ferretti Goes With Classic, Clean Philosophy for Fall 2009 Campaign
>> Steven Meisel photographed Alberta Ferretti's Fall 2009 mainline campaign with books swirling around the lounging models — apparently models and books are becoming a thing — but Alasdair McLellan, along with stylist Vanessa Reid, masterminded the more streamlined Philosophy ads. They went with two relative newcomers for the London shoot: Bailey Barger and Auguste Abeliunaite, who is most well-known for her teary turn on the Jil Sander runway.
Raquel Zimmermann Does Masculin/Feminin for Jean Paul Gaultier's Fall 2009 Campaign
>> Placing a male and female model together against a gray studio background is quickly becoming a Jean Paul Gaultier campaign signature — it was that way with Daria Werbowy for Fall 2008, and an ankle-wrapped Lara Stone for Spring 2009; but for Fall 2009, the campaign's usual photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin played with the formula a little bit. Instead of hiring a male model, Raquel Zimmermann posed in the past few months in both the masculine and feminine roles. This upcoming month before all the Fashion Weeks get under way, she's planning to go to Vienna and then surfing in Hawaii.
Gisele Bundchen Gets De-Bumped for Fall 2009 London Fog Campaign
>> Headlines were made last week when Bar Refaeli replaced fellow Leonardo DiCaprio ex Gisele Bundchen as the face of Rampage; apparently, Gisele was slated to do another campaign, but for a few reasons, including her pregnancy, she's appearing in the ads for a different Iconix brand — London Fog — instead, replacing tight jeans and lingerie with a trench coat.
The campaign was photographed just recently by Nino Munoz in mid-July, and the brand chose to slim down her visible baby bump through retouching — as can be seen in the comparison below. Dari Marder, London Fog's Chief Marketing Officer explained of the decision: "Although Gisele was photographed while pregnant, most of the shots have been retouched to respect her privacy during this wonderful and personal time in her life."
