Carine Roitfeld Takes the Stylish Set to Shangri-La

To celebrate the second issue of her magazine CR Fashion Book, Carine Roitfeld invited a bevy of industry figureheads and celebrities to a party at the Shangri-La Hotel in Paris.

To celebrate the second issue of her magazine CR Fashion Book, Carine Roitfeld invited a bevy of industry figureheads and celebrities to a party at the Shangri-La Hotel in Paris. Karl Lagerfeld, Alexander Wang, Leigh Lezark, Kanye West, and Jessica Stam were among the stars in attendance, as was Kate Moss, who wore a fresh-from-the-runway ensemble from Fall 2013 Saint Laurent and attended with husband Jamie Hince. Those assembled took in a performance by Paris Opera singer Marie-Agnès Gillot, and Roitfeld herself led the first dance while guests looked on and took photos. The party even included a star from the auto industry: a CR Fashion Book-branded Mercedes-Benz.

Get a look at all the industry names and stylish stars who went to the party here in the gallery.

Leap Into the Balletic Second Issue of CR Fashion Book

Carine Roitfeld counts her private ballet lessons as the inspiration for the dance-themed second issue of her magazine, CR Fashion Book.

Carine Roitfeld counts her private ballet lessons as the inspiration for the dance-themed second issue of her magazine, CR Fashion Book.

"I'm obsessed with the body of the ballet dancer, obsessed with the music and obsessed with the Russian tradition in ballet," Roitfeld told WWD. "When you are a dancer, you don't get money. You do it because you love it. It's so pure and beautiful — the freedom, the movement, the gestures."

It follows that the pictures in the magazine would be beautiful, too. Gus Van Sant captured dancer Sergei Polunin in the middle of a leap for one of the issue's covers; for the other, he shot a stiletto pointe shoe created by artist Brigitte Niedermair. The issue includes Rick Owens's first ever editorial, a photo story by Bruce Weber, and Gisele Bündchen's interview with model Kiara Kabukuru. Photographer Maurizi Bavutti captured a surreal vision of what dancers look like backstage, and Kacper Kasprzyk depicted a dancer's life and training by photographing David Hallberg.

The second issue of CR Fashion Book will be on European shelves Feb. 21 and will debut stateside Feb. 28. A sneak peek here in the gallery.

Carine Roitfeld Reveals Inspiration For First Issue of CR Fashion Book

"When something is consuming your thoughts, you suddenly notice it everywhere," writes Carine Roitfeld in the editor's letter for the first issue of CR Fashion Book.
CR Fashion Book First Issue Inspired by Birth and Rebirth

"When something is consuming your thoughts, you suddenly notice it everywhere," writes Carine Roitfeld in the editor's letter for the first issue of CR Fashion Book. "When I learned that my daughter, Julia, was expecting, I immediately began seeing babies and new mothers on planes, at fashion shows, in New York and in Paris. Birth and rebirth all around. I became obsessed."

That explains why the seminal issue of the new magazine, which has been teased with videos and photographs, is "filled with both images and ideas about birth, pregnancy, and family." A black and white picture of a pregnant Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, belly exposed by an unzipped leather jacket, accompanies the online version of the editor's letter.

Evidence of this obsession is readily available on the magazine's revamped website, which launched on Tuesday. An editorial starring Marie Piovesan called "Lullaby," for example, features the model posing with a baby doll.

A focus on the industry's new talents will continue in issues to come. "I've edited the magazine to be a who's who of the next generation, as well as an ode to fashion's legends and icons," Roitfeld writes. "Created with humor, joy, grace, and always a dash of irreverence."

A look at the birth of Roitfeld's new magazine, which will hit newsstands on Sept. 13, here in the gallery.

    It's a Film, It's a Mag . . . It's the Teaser For CR Fashion Book's First Issue

First she gave us images, and now she's giving us film: Carine Roitfeld has released a 40-second teaser video for her new magazine CR Fashion Book, which gives brief behind-the-scenes looks at some of the first issue's shoots.

First she gave us images, and now she's giving us film: Carine Roitfeld has released a 40-second teaser video for her new magazine CR Fashion Book, which gives brief behind-the-scenes looks at some of the first issue's shoots. In the short clip, set to an abbreviated version of the Lupe Fiasco song "Superstar," Roitfeld is seen weaving in and out of fashion shows and placating the corps of paparazzi who document her every move. In the background, we hear her asking, "Is it too extreme? This is a big moment, no?" before snippets of a few photo sessions appear. While it's unconfirmed whether the footage comes from the documentary Mademoiselle C — which follows the creation of the first issue of CR Fashion Book — one thing is certain: when Roitfeld asks, "It's a big return, no?" the answer is a resounding yes.

The magazine is scheduled to be on newsstands by Sept. 13; a look at what we can expect from that issue in the video below.

Carine Roitfeld: "I'm Not Bad-Looking, but I'm Not a Beauty Either"

"Normally, everything starts to go down, but that goes up," says Carine Roitfeld of the effect her newfound obsession with ballet has had on her posterior.

"Normally, everything starts to go down, but that goes up," says Carine Roitfeld of the effect her newfound obsession with ballet has had on her posterior. "I had to give all my skirts to the seamstress, and she had to add five centimeters. That's a lot."

In a recent Harper's Bazaar profile, Roitfeld says that she works out to "try to be in shape to be a young grandma." She also says that she doesn't have time to eat — or to read her old magazine, Vogue Paris. And with good reason: in addition to launching her magazine CR Fashion Book, she's been busy working on her upcoming partnership with MAC. Read on for her thoughts on that — and more.

On working with MAC: "I'm not bad-looking, but I'm not a beauty either. I think I have character, and that is what people like in me," she says of the campaign image, which features her in a slip dress. "I think women can recognize themselves in that picture. They see, 'Oh, she's not wearing too much makeup; she's not too much dressed; she's not too much bizarre. She's very much like another woman — simple.'"

On the staff of CR Fashion Book: "I'm using new people, so I'm going to fight to make them stars. It's very risky. I like to take risks. It's very exciting in a way. It's a bit Steve Jobs, no? Each day is a new challenge to find the model, the photographer, the money, the location, you know?"

On not reading Vogue Paris: "I have not looked at French Vogue. It's like a divorce in a way. It's still very fresh; it's still very like my baby for 10 years. I prefer to take a big distance; maybe next year, it will be finished. I don't do the magazine because I want revenge — you say, revenge?"

On her trim figure: "I don't eat a lot, to be honest — never. I'm a bit like a little bird, picking all day long, but I'm not getting pasta or getting all those things, you know? So I think it's my morphology. I've always been skinny."

The second preview image for the debut issue of Carine Roitfeld's highly anticipated new magazine, CR Fashion Book, depicts a woman in black holding a doll swaddled in white.

The image, which stars model Marie Piovesan, is as much a study in contrasts as the previous glimpse at the magazine. In the first teaser, shot by Sebastian Faena, model Juliet Ingleby walks through a cemetery in a sheer lavender veil — and little else — flanked by three models dressed in head-to-toe black.

The first issue of CR Fashion Book is available for preorder now and will be on newsstands on Sept. 13. A look at the two teaser images here in the gallery.

Carine Roitfeld has revealed an image from the highly anticipated debut issue of her new magazine, CR Fashion Book.

Carine Roitfeld has revealed an image from the highly anticipated debut issue of her new magazine, CR Fashion Book. In the image — shot by Sebastian Faena — model Juliet Ingleby walks through a cemetery naked, save for a few yards of lavender fabric draped dramatically over her face and body. Ingleby is followed by three other models wearing head-to-toe black, with their faces similarly obscured by black veils. The image can be seen as a GIF file (in which Ingleby's veil flutters in the breeze) on the magazine's website. The first issue itself will be on newsstands Sept. 13, but readers can preorder it now.

This image is one of several teasers Roitfeld has used to create buzz about the magazine. The book's "Issue 0" appeared as an insert in a recent issue of V Magazine, and a behind-the-scenes video appeared online last month. Roitfeld and her magazine are also the focus of a documentary called Mademoiselle C, which is still in production.
