>> Diane von Furstenberg on Her Marriage, Living in Separate Homes—Diane von Furstenberg's marriage to Barry Diller has been the subject of much scrutiny, but she sums it up as thus in Thursday's Page Six Magazine: "Barry has loved me unconditionally for 34 years. I did leave him, and I went with other men, but they always ended up being jealous of Barry and not the other way around. At the end, he got me, and I'm happy he got me. He's the pillar of our family." On the subject of her and Diller having separate homes: "In New York, we don't sleep together. I like it this way. It's my decision. Eventually, we'll get a place in the city together." [NY Post]

Is a Marc Jacobs Movie Project in the Works?

Mon, 02/08/10 — 05:48:37 PM

>> Marc Jacobs's longtime business partner Robert Duffy joined Twitter on January 29 — catch him while you can, he says he's only Twittering until Feb. 16 after the Marc by Marc Jacobs show.  In the week or so he's been on the social network, however, Duffy has shed a lot of light on upcoming projects at the company — as well as his business philosophy. For instance:

Duffy went to Los Angeles last week to work on an undisclosed movie project.

"Working on a movie project in LA. Also helping to edit a photo book about all the people that work with us. It's amazing! . . . The kids I work with all over the world are the most inspiring ever! So a book is being done on them. Working title 'the men and women of mj.'"

>> Devi Kroell and Lanvin Now Share an Investor —The Bartel family, founders of Travelzoo, who last November took a 12.5 percent stake in Lanvin's parent company, has been revealed as Devi Kroell's silent investor.  Bartel quietly took a stake in Kroell in 2008, allowing the designer to open boutiques and expand her product range; she's also holding her first runway show Feb. 15 during New York Fashion Week.  Bartel reportedly doesn't have the intention of building a fashion conglomerate, but has looked at investment opportunities in Christian Lacroix and Jil Sander in recent years. Andre Leon Talley Has 13 Custom-Made Capes and a Catchphrase for His First Judging Season on America's Next Top Model

Mon, 02/08/10 — 07:48:07 AM

>> Tyra Banks first approached Andre Leon Talley to be on America's Next Top Model eight years ago. “At that point," he told WWD, "I said no because it was the beginning. I was thinking I wanted to see where it goes.” Fast forward to 2010 and cycle 14 of the show, which premieres March 10 on The CW, with Talley on the judging panel:

I felt maybe I could contribute something to it that had not been on the show. I just felt that it was a way to step out of the box and associate myself with a very important American success story, a very important brand — Tyra Banks.

>> Burberry Fall 2010 to Be Streamed in 3-D —Avatar influenced the couture designs of Jean Paul Gaultier and Valentino a couple of weeks ago, but it was the technology — not the aesthetic — of the film which affected Christopher Bailey.  While the rest of London Fashion Week is being streamed in 2-D, Burberry will become the first brand to livestream its show in 3-D — to select guests in New York, Paris, Dubai, Los Angeles, and Tokyo, who will view the show in custom screening spaces designed by Bailey himself. For at-home viewers, the Feb. 23 show will also be projected in 2-D via live.burberry.com.

Donna Karan on the Current Fashion System: "We're Killing Our Own Industry"

Fri, 02/05/10 — 07:10:39 PM

>> Last night, in honor of two new graduate degrees at Parsons which she helped initiate, Donna Karan sat down with FIT's Valerie Steele for a little chat before a sold-out audience in the school's auditorium. Karan, who has also been a major proponent of updating the fashion schedule, explained how she proposes the changes be made:

It's very simple, we just stop. It is not nuclear science, it's really simple.  We deliver Fall clothes in August like back-to-school, we change the calendar, we go to stores and say, 'Okay, no more getting Fall clothes in July or June so they're on sale in September when the weather hasn't changed. We have to go into a system where we're talking in-season. It's the way we eat, it's the way we dress, it's the way we think. We've conditioned the consumer to buy on sale — I don't want to buy it full price because I can buy it on sale . . . We've turned our business into the white sale business.

>> Olivier Theyskens No Longer In Talks with Christopher Burch, Exploring Other Options —There had been speculation that Olivier Theyskens was working with Tory Burch's ex-husband Christopher Burch on a new retail concept, but it sounds like the deal is no longer an option — the talks reportedly ended last month and Burch's company confirmed that they are no longer in discussion. In the meantime, Olivier will be making an appearance in New York next Thursday for the Barneys-hosted launch of his The Other Side of the Picture book with Assouline; he's also said to be in talks with several different unspecified groups about a hopefully impending comeback. Giancarlo Giammetti: Valentino's Spring 2010 Couture Collection a "Ridiculous Circus"

Thu, 02/04/10 — 12:33:51 PM

>> Giancarlo Giammetti and Valentino Garavani are no strangers to disparaging Valentino's successors, and after current Valentino designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli presented their Spring 2010 couture collection last month, Giammetti turned to Facebook.

Valentino's longtime business partner posted on his Facebook page that he was “just speechless,” continuing, “not sad…just surprised.…We have always supported the new designers and we love them, but this time we have to distance ourselves from this ridiculous circus.”

Giammetti eventually deleted the comments after the reaction he received, but told WWD yesterday that both he and Garavani “are always supportive of the designers of Valentino, even if we don’t approve of their effort to be cool at all costs.” The house of Valentino declined comment.

>> Nathalie Rykiel Partnered with H&M Because They Were Copying Her —If you can't beat H&M, join them, is Nathalie Rykiel's attitude. Nathalie, currently in New York to launch the Sonia Rykiel for H&M knitwear collection, admitted when prompted that H&M, before their partnership, had used her designs. "Yes, of course! They copy me all the time! Finally I said, 'Look, if you want your girls to wear Sonia Rykiel from H&M, let's let them have the real thing!'"  The collection's launch is tonight at Bobo in the West Village, with Chanel Iman making her DJing debut on deck.  When WWD asked Chanel about her favorite workout song, she replied: "I don’t work out." Creative Director Nathan Jenden Leaving Diane von Furstenberg to Focus on Own Line

Thu, 02/04/10 — 10:59:37 AM

>> On Valentine's Day, Nathan Jenden will take his last runway bow as creative director of Diane von Furstenberg before shipping off to focus exclusively on his own collection, launched in 2006.

In his stead, von Furstenberg has hired Yvan Mispelaere, who was a member of Phoebe Philo's design team at Chloe and took a runway bow after her exit.  He then left Chloe to join Gucci under Frida Giannini in 2006.

Jenden has been with von Furstenberg since 2001; she invested in his eponymous line when it launched and will continue to do so after Jenden leaves her company. “I have an interest in his company and I have an interest in his future, and if he wants to show in New York, then I will help him as the president of the CFDA,” von Furstenberg explained.

Jenden admitted he might show in New York in the future; he has been showing in London to give him time between von Furstenberg's show and his own.  He also has plans to expand his collection into resort and accessories in the near future.
