cruise control

051508_03 >> Buzz around cruise shows may be a new thing, but as Karl Lagerfeld prepares to debut the Chanel resort collection in Miami later today, rumors are running rampant — Naomi Campbell walking the runway?!

Tonight's show will feature 60 looks — and it looks like at least one of those looks will feature "the Anna Wintour shoulder."  When Karl was giving an interview about the cruise collection, he was interrupted by the arrival of Iekeliene Stange in a black and peach satin dress, which he pointed out featured "the Anna Wintour shoulder — it is like the things she had at the Met.  It was invented for her."

In case enhanced shoulders aren't enough show for you, the presentation is rumored to end with 18 synchronized swimmers, 8 of which are in Lagerfeld-designed swimsuits emblazoned with a letter.  After a pool performance, they will spell out Chanel as a finale, as a nod to The Raleigh Hotel venue, which hosted several Esther Williams movies.

nina nina everywhere

9780061664618 >> The end of the saga nears: After all the hubbub about where Nina Garcia was going post-fashion director status at Elle, it looks like she decided to stick at the magazine for a little longer.

Before hopping over to fashion directorship at Marie Claire in September, Nina has accepted the short-term editor at large position offered to her at Elle, which will run through September 1 and allow her to remain the magazine's judge on Project Runway for the upcoming fifth season.  That way, everyone's happy: Nina gets her judge spot, Elle has a kosher sponsorship, and all is well in the world of PR

Meanwhile, Nina's also coming out with a follow-up in August to her Little Black Book of Style — entitled The One Hundred, it details the 100 wardrobe must-haves every woman needs to own (although they need to update that last line of the cover).

another "fashion" show

>>  "Okay everybody, Anne's here," with her Yves Saint Laurent Star necklace, Besace flap bag, and pained shuffle walk.  The first three clips of Stylista have been uploaded, and the show looks to be just what is expected from a Tyra-produced series: over-the-top, affected, with plenty of whine to go around.

ali speaks up

>>  After making waves earlier this year for a Wall Street Journal article detailing her early departure from the Paris shows — she was only cast in one show because "her legs were too plump" — Ali Michael appeared on The Today Show this morning to detail her experiences as a model.  She started out at 5'9", 130 pounds as a 15 year old,  dwindling at the behest of her agencies to become 102 pounds.  In Paris last year, she was sitting among a group of four girls: "I mentioned I hadn’t had a period in over a year and one by one, and each one of them said, ‘Me too.’ These were girls in their late teens, early 20s. There was no reason for that."

For more Ali quotes, to see Amy Astley blame the designers for the "hyperthin" girls, and to see Today's Ann Curry flub her information on Nina Garcia's status, watch the clip (Ali's interview starts at 2:22):

fashionista/stylista/whatever

UPDATE: More dish on Stylista — the contestants work as assistants to Anne Slowey, not Joe Zee as previously reported. Each episode, the competitors have one assistant task and a fashion editorial assignment, and each week, in consultation with Joe Zee, Anne fires one person. The final standing assistant standing wins a paid editorial position at Elle, a paid lease on an apartment in Manhattan, and a clothing allowance at H&M, all for one year, valued at $100,000.

promotional photos for Stylista (which has been renamed again from Fashionista), the Tyra Banks-produced reality show in which 11 contestants compete for a job at Elle, have appeared, and they definitely look pretty Tyra-fying.  No sign of creative director Joe Zee yet, but there's plenty of Fashion News Director Anne Slowey to go around.  See, Nina, this is what you're missing!

alt denied lunch by satc

Satc >> Andre Leon Talley isn't the only member of the Vogue staff to appear in the upcoming Sex and the City movie.

As part of a scene which involves Carrie Bradshaw being photographed for a fictional Age Issue of Vogue, stylist Lawren Howell (who previously made a cameo on The Hills) helps Andre drape the dresses, and Contributing Editor Plum Sykes reports for the accompanying story.  Meanwhile, Anna Wintour is there in spirit: She picked all the couture dresses that are in the fictional photoshoot personally.

Patrick Demarchelier "shoots" the editorial, and off-camera, Andre Leon Talley makes stylistic decisions on accessories — gloves to go with the Vera Wang wedding dress? "We want to see her putting them on."  And earrings?  "Not too big."

When ALT asks for lunch on the set, however, it's more of a problem. "He is told he has to work for eight hours — till 5:00 p.m. — before he can eat. This is not what happens on a Vogue shoot, he tells [director Michael Patrick] King, pursing and twisting his lips in a way that says, I have better things to do than not eat lunch," reports Plum Sykes.

Yikes.

But ALT must have gotten his lunch eventually, because he ended on a good note, screaming, 'This is fashion!' into the video monitor.  Good times.

For more good times, a clip of that segment of the movie . . .
