Tom Ford Talks Kids, YSL, and Making It in Fashion

From his childhood in the American Southwest to his positions at Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, there's never been a point in Tom Ford's life when aesthetics didn't matter — and he said as much during a discussion with Fern Mallis Tuesday night at the 92nd Street Y in New York.

From his childhood in the American Southwest to his positions at Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, there's never been a point in Tom Ford's life when aesthetics didn't matter — and he said as much during a discussion with Fern Mallis Tuesday night at the 92nd Street Y in New York.

Mallis asked Ford about his entire life and career, allowing plenty of room for witty banter and revealing moments. Ford even mentioned that he's always wanted to have kids. "I think I'd better get busy soon, though, because I'd like to be able to pick them up," he joked. But between designing his next women's collection and the three films he has planned for the future, Ford is already plenty busy. Below, some of his most memorable quotes from the evening.

On getting dressed for school at age 7: "I didn't want to carry a book bag. I thought it looked messy. No, I had a nice little overcoat and I had a briefcase. And it was a real man's briefcase. And when you're 7 years old, a real man’s briefcase is like going to school with luggage."

On his first job with designer Cathy Hardwick: "Of course you would assume if someone is showing you a fashion portfolio that they studied fashion. I didn't. [Ford studied interior design and architecture at Parsons.] The first day she said, 'Draw some circle skirts.' And I'm like, 'Sh*t.' So I went to Bloomingdale's, flipped open the circle skirts, saw where all the seams were, ran back to the office, sketched some circle skirts, and put them on her desk. So I learned a lot on the job."

On feeling accomplished: "You never 'make it.' Especially in an industry where you have to churn out stuff. Things. You're never finished, and you're only as good as your last collection. I mean, in the last year, I've had a comeback, I've been finished, I've come back again. You can't rest. You cannot rest."

On designing Yves Saint Laurent: "Yves was very friendly at first. . . . As things started to go well and as things started to get good reviews and our sales started going up, Yves was no longer my friend. And I actually have some wonderful handwritten letters in very beautiful handwriting in ink: 'In 13 minutes you have destroyed what I worked 40 years to create.' . . . It was tough."

On his first movie, A Single Man: "I wasn't trying to create a big box office hit. I was trying to create something personal that I loved that I didn't compromise on, and it was a very different type of expression."

On that H&M rumor: "I keep reading that, and I find that amusing. I've never had a conversation with H&M. I'm really happy doing what I do. . . . What excites me now is the very best: the best stitching, the best fabric, the best quality. And unfortunately, or fortunately, that does tend to cost money."

Ford's advice to aspiring designers: "If there's anything else in the world you could be happy doing, do that. I'm serious. This is the hardest industry. . . . If you love it great. You'll have a wonderful life. But I don't think people realize how hard people work in fashion."

"The collection really represents Calvin Klein; its really light, its really well-made, and the price is really right." Costa told us. The Chicest Looks from the Met Gala Afterparty

There wasn't a red carpet at the Met Gala's official afterparty, but its attendees looked just as glamorous as they did heading up the steps at the ball.

There wasn't a red carpet at the Met Gala's official afterparty, but its attendees looked just as glamorous as they did heading up the steps at the ball.

Miuccia Prada and Anna Wintour hosted a crowd including Kate Bosworth and Marc Jacobs at the Harry F. Sinclair House Monday night. Prada was seen walking around the fete hand in hand with her husband Patrizio Bertelli and tapped her feet to performances by Alicia Keys and Azealia Banks. Wintour changed from her white Prada gown to a black cocktail dress for the afterparty, and Karlie Kloss exchanged her floor-length Jason Wu creation for a shorter dress by the designer.

There were also afterparties at the restaurant Crown and the Boom Boom Room at the Standard Hotel. A glimpse at the Sinclair House festivities follows in the gallery.

Linda Evangelista

Linda Evangelista and Francois-Henri Pinault Reach Settlement

A judge has approved a child support settlement between Francois-Henri Pinault and Linda Evangelista for the care of their 5-year-old son, Augustin.

A judge has approved a child support settlement between Francois-Henri Pinault and Linda Evangelista for the care of their 5-year-old son, Augustin.

The terms of the deal are undisclosed, but one source close to the proceedings told the New York Post that Pinault had "gone a long way toward meeting those original demands." Evangelista and Pinault made the agreement by phone on Monday morning, the third day of four scheduled days in court. A magistrate in Manhattan approved the deal Tuesday afternoon.

"Everybody's glad for the sake and the benefit of the child that it's done," said Pinault's lawyer, David Aronson.

Evangelista was originally reported to have asked for $46,000 a month in child support for Augustin — which would cover a 24-hour-a-day nanny and armed security guards — but her lawyer William Beslow said during testimony that that figure was overstated.

After making the agreement with Pinault Monday morning, Evangelista donned a Prada gown for Monday night's Met Gala, which celebrated the Costume Institute's 2012 exhibition Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations.

InstaGlam: Our Favorite Snaps From the Met Gala Red Carpet

Met Gala Red Carpet Pictures and Interviews 2012

>> The annual Costume Institute Gala's red carpet is an infamous frenzy of fashion and flashbulbs — and we were right there to capture it all. From Anna to Miuccia, Calvin to Valentino, the grand steps of the Met were jam-packed with some of the industry's most favorite faces — not to mention some of Hollywood's favorite stars. "It's always a fun night, you know? Everyone is dressed up and looks beautiful," explained Caroline Trentini, who was dressed in a denim gown designed by date Olivier Theyskens. Ginnifer Goodwin, who wore a custom Monique Lhuillier gown, shared the sentiment: "I'm excited to see so many old friends. I know that I've got a lot of buddies inside. That's what I'm most excited about," the actress said.

"It's hugely special! What could be more important than the Costume Institute Gala? It feels like the Oscars," a Schiaparelli-pink-haired Chris Benz explained before whisking date Julie Macklowe — also sporting fuchsia locks — through the doors of the museum.

"I think it's more fun than the Oscars!" director Baz Luhrmann — who made a series of films for the exhibit — disagreed. "Just because there are no awards. There's no stress. All I have to do is eat a little something, drink a little something, and watch Bruno Mars rock the house. That can't be too hard, you know."

Impossible Glamour: Fashion's Finest at the 2012 Met Gala

Monday night was the industry's biggest, most glamorous party, and each look that came up the steps for the Met Gala was more stunning than the last.
Met Gala Red Carpet Fashion Pictures 2012

Monday night was the industry's biggest, most glamorous party, and each look that came up the steps for the Met Gala was more stunning than the last.

Anna Wintour arrived first, clad in a Prada update of Elsa Schiaparelli's famous lobster dress — the first time she hasn't worn Chanel to a Met Gala in six years — followed shortly by Miuccia Prada herself, wearing a shirt and pants of her own design.

But even though Monday's gala honored Prada's work, other fashion houses turned out lots of good looks. Scarlett Johansson wore custom Dolce & Gabbana, Jessica Stam stunned in Dior, and Lauren Santo Domingo slid into Oscar de la Renta. A list of who wore what sits here, but pictures of all the best looks can be found in the gallery.

Schiaparelli to Relaunch in February 2013

Tod's owner Diego Della Valle is taking advantage of the new attention directed at Schiaparelli by bringing the long-dormant brand back to the market early next year.

Tod's owner Diego Della Valle is taking advantage of the new attention directed at Schiaparelli by bringing the long-dormant brand back to the market early next year.

Della Valle plans to hire a designer by September and aims to have accessories, fragrances, cosmetics, and some clothes in stores by next February. He's hired actress Farida Khelfa to be the face of the brand — her first assignment is attending this evening's Met Gala in vintage Schiaparelli — and will set up shop at 21 Place Vendôme in Paris, the same address at which Elsa Schiaparelli opened her first boutique.

"The idea with Schiaparelli is to propose the brand with all its modernity, and represent dreams, art and all the most sophisticated things we can do," Della Valle told WWD.

Della Valle has reopened old fashion brands before: in 2002, he brought the shoe label Roger Vivier back to life.

Schiaparelli is one half of the focus of this year's Costume Institute exhibit, Impossible Conversations: Schiaparelli and Prada. The exhibit will be open to the public from May 10 to Aug. 19.

Inside the Costume Institute's Schiaparelli and Prada Exhibit

Let's talk about fashion: that's the premise of this year's Costume Institute exhibit, titled Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations.

Let's talk about fashion: that's the premise of this year's Costume Institute exhibit, titled Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations.

Through a series of videos directed by Baz Luhrmann, the exhibit — which was inspired by a series of Vanity Fair articles from the '30s — imagines Miuccia Prada and the late Elsa Schiaparelli (played by Australian actress Judy Davis) discussing their respective approaches to dressing women. Against this backdrop are clothing and accessories from each designer, arranged almost as if in conversation, too: In one gallery called "Waist Up, Waist Down," Prada's skirts are shown next to Schiaparelli's jackets. "To me the waist up is more spiritual, more intellectual, while the waist down is more basic, more grounded," Prada says in the coordinating video. "It's about sex. It's about making love. It's about life. It's about giving birth."

Other conversations include themes like "Hard Chic," which looks at the influence of menswear and military uniforms, and "The Surreal Body," which examines pieces like Schiaparelli's famous lobster dress and Prada's Fall 2011 skirts and shirts that are covered in large sequins resembling fish scales.

Prada told The New York Times that while she's never directly been inspired by Schiaparelli, she now understands "there actually were some similarities. But it is other people's vision."

Fashion's biggest names will get a first look at the exhibit tonight during the Met Gala, and the exhibit itself will open to the public on May 10 and close Aug. 19. For now, a sneak peek at the exhibit in the gallery.

It's official: Marchesa has teamed up with Li & Fung USA to launch a lower-priced diffusion line. Though plans are still in their infancy — and the new line has yet to be named — the brand confirms that the line will include printed and embroidered daywear, as well as accessories. All will be priced from $150 to $750, with a projected launch date of Pre-Fall 2012.

"We have always had a vision for Marchesa to be a lifestyle brand," Designer Georgina Chapman explained. "We have been so specific for such a long time, and the idea to broaden out to a different consumer, and to our same consumer as well." Chapman also added that she was "hoping Marchesa will have something to offer that is very different from what's on the floor at present."
