This Week's Best Dressed

What's the holiday season without a little glamour?
Best-Dressed Fashion and Models | Week of Dec. 17, 2012

What's the holiday season without a little glamour? At this week's flurry of parties and events, there was plenty of it. ASMALLWORLD's Winter Weekend getaway in Gstaad, Switzerland, saw the style set — including Carey Mulligan, Poppy Delevingne, Tali Lennox, and Arizona Muse — in a dazzling array of adornment; embroidery, rhinestones, sequins, and lace were all well-represented. At Love's Christmas party in London, editor at large Lulu Kennedy sparkled in an unorthodox iridescent skirt paired with a very classic top: a '90s-era Nirvana smiley-face t-shirt. And even Brad Goreski didn't shy from glitz: at the Miss Universe Pageant in Las Vegas, the bespectacled reality-TV fashion star shone in a lurex sports coat by Dsquared2.

All of those looks and more are right here in our weekly best-dressed roundup.

The birth of her second child in September had Rachel Comey "thinking about different body shapes. Like those without perfect waists," she said. As a result, much of her Pre-Fall 2013 collection was easy to wear, soft, and in some cases even a little boxy. A single-breasted coat dress fell straight from the shoulders to right above the knee, and a wool motorcycle-style jacket was cut generously. A sleeveless leather shirt floated away from the body, as did a number of other shirts, mimicking the A-line skirts they were sometimes paired with.

That doesn't mean there weren't figure-flattering pieces, too. One sweater depicting the Brooklyn Bridge in black and white stayed close to the body, and so did a black dress with embroidered accents.

Don't be fooled by the simple shapes in Erdem Moralioglu's Pre-Fall 2013 collection; the pieces in this offering are actually incredibly complex, thanks to the designer's masterful combinations of materials like PVC, leather, lace, and organza.

Moralioglu said he was inspired by the 1965 film Pleasures of the Flesh, which made him think about "mixing things that don't really go together, of things that are a little bit wrong." That manifested in a number of ways: a prim floral-printed silk was cut into a houndstooth pattern and then sewn onto a transparent raincoat, and huge multicolored paillettes that looked like fish scales were layered over another flowery dress. A closer look at a pair of what appeared to be lace trousers revealed that they're actually made from leather pretending to be broderie anglaise, and the yoke of one sweet-looking pink, yellow, and blue dress was made from clear PVC.

By applying new fabrication techniques to classic shapes, Moralioglu freed himself up for a little exploration while ensuring that these clothes will make sense to customers when they hit the selling floor. And what's more exciting than people actually wearing these rather experimental looks?

Diesel Boss Renzo Rosso Acquires Stake in Marni (Updated)

After months of speculation that Diesel founder Renzo Rosso would buy a stake in Marni, Rosso confirmed on Thursday that the brand is now in his portfolio.

After months of speculation that Diesel founder Renzo Rosso would buy a stake in Marni, Rosso confirmed on Thursday that the brand is now in his portfolio.

The exact figures of the deal were not disclosed, but Reuters reports that Rosso made the acquisition through his holding company, Only the Brave, which in addition to Diesel also controls Maison Martin Margiela and Viktor & Rolf. Rosso told WWD that it's his ultimate goal to crate the industry's next big fashion conglomerate.

"It's my big dream to create a modern group that is an alternative to the existing ones," he said. "We are beginning to become one such group, and we are working on consolidating it."

Rosso's investment will not only help open more Marni boutiques around the world, but also push the brand into markets like China. That's the kind of support Marni founder and CEO Gianni Castiglioni said he was looking for in October.

"We would like to double our sales in five years through a further development of retail but without drastically overturning our company," he said. "I would be open to consider a partner only if he would share my vision in managing the company. We are looking at industrial partners that can provide competence and long-term vision."

Industrially speaking, Rosso is a good fit. Through its subsidiaries, Only the Brave manufactures clothing for Vivienne Westwood, Dsquared2, and Marc Jacobs's menswear line. Rosso is also invested in the ecommerce giant Yoox, and in Marcolin, a company that produces eyewear for Tom Ford, Roberto Cavalli, and — naturally — Diesel.

She Did It For Vogue: Karlie Kloss Explains Her Short New Haircut

When Karlie Kloss turned up backstage at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show last month with a much shorter haircut, she told us that she did it for "a job."

When Karlie Kloss turned up backstage at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show last month with a much shorter haircut, she told us that she did it for "a job."

This week, Vogue published a story about a newly trendy haircut known simply as the chop, which in recent months has been adopted by everyone from Arizona Muse to Olivier Theyskens. Kloss's cut was administered by the mononymous New York stylist Garren in Patrick Demarchelier's photo studio, and the magazine chronicled the model's transformation from long-haired and lovely to short-haired and almost gamine.

"I love it. I can't stop touching it . . . it makes me feel more daring," Kloss said afterward, adding that having shorter locks "actually takes the focus off your hair and puts the focus on you. I'm starting to realize that it's all about confidence."

The only drawback to the new 'do? "It's winter, and I happen to have this very long neck," Kloss noted. "I may need to invest in some really warm scarves."

Emily Current and Merritt Elliott to Leave Current/Elliott

Designers Emily Current and Merritt Elliott have announced they're leaving Current/Elliott, the premium denim label they founded in 2008.

Designers Emily Current and Merritt Elliott have announced they're leaving Current/Elliott, the premium denim label they founded in 2008.

"We are so proud of what we have accomplished with Current/Elliott," the two said in a statement, declining to offer an explanation for their departure. "Parting ways has been a difficult decision, but we are thrilled for our next chapter in design and to perpetuate our whimsical Americana aesthetic across multiple categories."

The two will still work together as stylists and consultants, and have a few future design projects lined up.

If three instances of the same occurrence makes a trend, 2012 was a trendy year for designers to leave the brands they founded. Simon Spurr left his eponymous menswear line without explanation in March, and Doo-Ri Chung left her award-winning label Doo.Ri in June.
