>> Amongst the alligator belts and cuffs — complete with horned scales, in some cases — was a much more commercial collection for Ohne Titel's Alexa Adams and Flora Gill. "We're trying new things, but doing it our way," Adams confirmed. The season's firsts included their first shoe collection — woven leather flats and heels; a first print — custom knit herringbone; and a foray into eveningwear. But those fans of the label's body-hugging knits need not dismay: They were present in pencil skirts, cropped pants, and cardigans, in tomato red or royal blue.
>> New York Fashion Week is in full swing, and if one thing is certain, it's this: there will be no shortage of wild new beauty looks to try come next Spring. Already, designers have trotted out more Kool-aid colors than we care to count — in hair (Peter Som), on lips (Richard Chai Love), and on eyelids (Jeremy Laing). But what if creamsicle-hues are not your thing? No worries. We've spotted a treasure trove of other styles, including smokey eyebrows (Derek Lam), candy-apple lips (Patrick Ervell), and cat-eye liner (L.A.M.B.). Also on offer — for those more classically-inclined — are pretty peach cheeks (Boy And Girl By Band Of Outsiders) and surfer-swept tresses (Jill Stuart). Here, we've rounded up all these, plus more — after all, nothing says Spring like a fresh new look.
>> Versace just released images of its Fall 2011 Atelier Versace couture collection. Teal fur chubbies, vintage Versace prints pulled back out of the archives for voluminous skirts, and metallic minidresses printed with "I heart Versace" populate the offering, which also includes the dress Katy Perry recently wore to the MTV VMAs.
>> Carolina Herrera's Spring 2012 collection, full of sparrow prints and linear motifs, “started with the Bauhaus,” she said, citing “the modernity of lines and the fluidity.” As Nicki Minaj and Anna Wintour sat next to each other front row, Herrera sent out fluid mint green dresses and architectural embroideries. The color palette — largely jade green, rusty red, and sunny yellow — came from the Bakelite bangles that were used to accessorize the collection, she said.
>> While working on her Spring 2012 collection, Reece Solomon had sunshine on her mind. "I was thinking about a tropical beach," the designer explained after her presentation Sunday night. Not that it would have been difficult to guess; nestled along driftwood-strewn tables were any number of bags just perfect for a seaside getaway. There were jute totes in stripes and chevron; oversized clutches in turquoise and cobalt; and weekend-ready carryalls in sunflower yellow. But even if it's true that everyone loves a beach, Solomon is still a downtown girl, and she definitely knows her customer. For all the bright colors and light, there was still a whole lot of city spirit on display: shapes were structured, lines were clean, and the details had just the right amount of grit.
