After a confusing season with Lindsay Lohan at the artistic helm (a decision over which then-designer Esteban Cortazar left the company) and having fired Estrella Archs (who was probably only hired because she agreed to work with Lohan), Emanuel Ungaro has finally decided to place a real designer in creative director position—Giles Deacon! Deacon, who will continue producing his namesake collection, will stage his first presentation for Ungaro during Paris fashion week this October and will forgo runway shows for the first two seasons.
“I obviously don’t want to infringe upon my own line, but I like things that are very feminine, lots of color, great prints, great quality, some unusual cuts. All of those things that I like in the world of fashion design I’m going to bring to what I feel is appropriate for the Ungaro woman,” Deacon said of designing for the house best represented by frills and fuchsia.
The 40-year-old British designer is not deterred by the revolving door of creatives that have passed through Ungaro since 2004. “Yes, I’m totally aware and respectful of the pressure but at the same time, I’ve run my own business for eight years and worked in lots of places,” Deacon said. “I think as soon as you start worrying and thinking about that too much, you’re not concentrating on doing good work, which is the most important thing.”
The ladies of Sex and the City walked the light blue carpet at Radio City Music Hall last night to celebrate the New York premiere of Sex and the City 2. Sarah Jessica Parker couldn't stop twirling in her neon yellow Valentino Haute Couture, Kristen Davis was equally bright in hot pink vintage Jean Desses, Kim Cattrall chose gold Naeem Khan, and Cynthia Nixon kept it chic in black Carolina Herrera. After the film, Parker and company headed over to Lincoln Center for a tented Middle Eastern-themed party where guests noshed on bite-size cupcakes from Crumbs. Sarah Jessica Parker and Kristen Davis both did wardrobe changes for the afterparty, the former into black lace Elie Saab and the latter into beaded vintage Balmain.
>> Busty Model Ashley Smith Making Waves —With the success of Lara Stone and the current taste for more zaftig shapes, it was only a matter of time before more bustier-than-usual models flooded the scene. Enter Texan Ashley Smith, who has Lara's gap teeth and the usual model measurements — 5'8.5" height, 24-inch waist, 34-inch hips, dress size 2 — with one notable exception: her 32D bust size. She shot with Terry Richardson back in February, and it's rumored that Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott are "in love with her." [Fashin, Fashin]
>> Mario Testino doesn't speak publicly often, but a sold-out crowd gathered at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston last weekend to hear him do just that. He touched on his methods — before photographing a famous subject, he researches portraits they've done in the past to see “what they can give me that they haven’t given anyone else” — as well as his detractors: “I’ve been criticized for pretty, smiley photographs, but at least someone is happy. In my mind, I am always giving the image to the sitter.”
He talked about meeting Gisele Bundchen and trying to get editors to use her at the end of the grunge-waif era: “It was, ‘Uh, no, the nose, the waist, the breasts.’ They saw problems everywhere. A year later, everyone wanted her.” He also recalled his first meeting with frequent collaborator Kate Moss, who was 14 at the time and crying backstage over getting only one runway look in a John Galliano show.
>> Philip Treacy Putting Together Isabella Blow Film —Just last week, it was announced that pieces of Isabella Blow's wardrobe — including 90 Alexander McQueen outfits, 50 hats from Philip Treacy, and shoes by Manolo Blahnik — will be auctioned in September. And over the weekend at Naomi Campbell's birthday party, Treacy had a further piece of news related to the deceased fashion editor; Andre Leon Talley reports: "He has a producer to do a film on Isabella, and [John] Galliano has already confirmed to play himself. Who will play Isabella? Treacy has a great trick up his hat, and it’s going to rock the world, but he cannot reveal it until this major new talent confirms." [NYTimes, Vogue]
>> Naomi Campbell may be having issues due to an alleged diamond gift from Liberia's former president Charles Taylor, but she had no problem accepting gifts on Saturday for her 40th birthday — there were reportedly so many, they had to be be ferried back on multiple boat trips to her boyfriend Vladimir Doronin's yacht.
Doronin planned a rumored $1 million black panther-themed bash for the model (after her favorite animal) at the Hotel du Cap near Cannes, which included a 45-minute set by The Black Eyed Peas. P. Diddy and Tyson Beckford gave tributes during dinner, which saw Campbell seated at a revolving center table. Later, guests like John Galliano, Georgina Chapman, Lorenzo Martone, Edward Eninnful, Bethann Hardison, Shala Monroque, Hamish Bowles, Christy Turlington, Eva Herzigova, Grace Jones, Domenico Dolce, Stefano Gabbana, and Giovanna Battaglia hit the dance floor — where Marc Jacobs supposedly challenged Jennifer Lopez to a walk off.
At midnight, the music stopped so guests could sing "Happy Birthday," and a three tier cake was brought out; Doronin gave a speech, calling Naomi his "wild woman" and his "great love." Speaking of which, the model has been wearing a large emerald ring — sparking rumors — but her reps deny an engagement and Doronin remains married to his estranged wife.

>> A Full Look at Lara Stone's Custom Givenchy Wedding Dress —Two weekends ago, when Lara Stone married David Walliams, the only photo of her custom Givenchy wedding dress available was taken from the waist up. Now, a visual of the full dress, left, and if you haven't gotten your fill of custom wedding gowns for models, on June 9, Coco Rocha will be wed in her Zac Posen dress; just this morning, she Tweeted, "Just went for another fitting at Zac Posen's. The dress he's created for my wedding is amazing!! Better then anything I could have imagined." [TFS, @Oh_So_Coco]
Bargain hunting for summer dresses is especially easy this season with the adorable options above—like the bustier dress from Silence & Noise ($68), Topshop's eyelet sundress in peach ($70), and Nasty Gal's mint green peplum mini ($78). We're big fans of easy summer looks that don't take a whole lot of thought, and with prices like these, we can afford to snatch up one for every day of the week.
>> For a recent chat with the Financial Times's Vanessa Friedman, Marc Jacobs wore a white button-down shirt with jeans instead of his usual kilt; is his addiction to the skort waning, perhaps courtesy of his fiance Lorenzo Martone's dislike of the look? “I just didn’t feel like wearing it,” Jacobs explained.
As for his compulsive gym habit, Jacobs says he hasn’t “been able to work out at all,” due to a torn rotator cuff on his shoulder; he's having surgery in a few weeks. His predilection for purchasing art, too, has been curbed: “Actually, I haven’t bought anything for a long time. The other day I bought a little 1962 Ellsworth Kelly at the Christie’s auction, but that’s it. It was a funny thing for me to buy, too. It’s just a white square with a yellow curve. Usually I like more figurative work – this is the sort of thing I’d look at and admire but not want to buy. But I just like it . . . it makes me happy.”
