Paris Fashion Week Street Style — Denim Trousers

There was a '70s redux on the Spring 2011 runways, to say the least, and we spotted the look off the runway, too.

There was a '70s redux on the Spring 2011 runways, to say the least, and we spotted the look off the runway, too. Between Paris Fashion Week shows, we admired this leggy cutie's way with layering and pairing shades of green. Her throwback jeans and leather jacket emanate that '70s feel, while classic black heeled boots and polished Celine tote add an equestrian touch. Get her look with similar items from MiH jeans, Chloe, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and Diane von Furstenberg.

Stefano Pilati Said to Have Renewed Contract at Yves Saint Laurent; Karl Lagerfeld Rumored to Be Retiring in 2012

>> In response to the rumors of Stefano Pilati's tenuous footing at Yves Saint Laurent, more rumors: Balmain's Christophe Decarnin, former Saint Laurent men's designer Hedi Slimane, and Raf Simons were all reportedly approached for the job, but nonetheless, Pilati is said to have recently extended his contract for another three years.

Word is, Hint reports: "Pierre Bergé has no interest in seeing the YSL brand continue. He'd rather see it killed and the legacy remain untouchable, observed only from afar through exhibitions, films, auctions, etc. As his foundation still controls the YSL archives, he can and does make life difficult for whomever wants a closer look at the house's DNA," which may have contributed to the potential replacements turning Pilati's position down. There's also speculation that Karl Lagerfeld plans to retire on his 30th anniversary at Chanel in 2012 — "it's thought he'll stage a massive, never-before-seen, no-expense-spared farewell" — leaving Alber Elbaz to take his place and Olivier Theyskens to take the reins at Lanvin. Minimalism — Just a "Blip on the Fashion Radar" Come Spring?

>> Is fashion's minimalist revival going to be over come Spring?

>> Is fashion's minimalist revival going to be over come Spring? In the wake of Paris Fashion Week, a number of insiders seem to think so.

Marc Jacobs is on board with the idea — the campy Spring 2011 Louis Vuitton collection spurred Vogue.com's Sarah Mower to write: "The excitement of stylized, decadent fun, running rampant as a backlash against minimalism [is] an idea that fashion editors will take up." Style.com's Nicole Phelps, too, made note of Jacobs's about-face from last season: "Not unlike his seventies-inflected signature show back in New York more than three weeks ago, this was a flat-out refusal of the minimalism that was all over last season's runways, his own included."

The New York Times's Eric Wilson chimes in: "It was striking to see jarring pink-and-orange combos at a number of shows: Martin Grant, Yves Saint Laurent, Cacharel, Giles Deacon, Christopher Kane and Marc Jacobs. (Not buying it was Karl Lagerfeld, who, at the Chanel show, told Cathy Horyn of The Times: 'I really don’t think women want to go around looking like a Saint Laurent shopping bag.') Regardless, it made last fall’s foray into minimalism feel like just a blip on the fashion radar." Paper's Mickey Boardman adds: “After the Céline-ification of fashion, everything became about good taste and beige. I think we all hungered for hot pink.”

Retailers seem to be feeling similarly. Ed Burstell, managing director at Liberty of London, told WWD: “I think there’s going to be some boredom for minimalism [by Spring]. I’m not sure everyone’s willing to walk away from things that are a little more fun and sexy to [looks more suited to] a Connecticut soccer mom heading for lunch.” Lane Crawford's Sarah Rutson agrees: “The customer has had enough of neutrals from fall. We need to set the sales floor alive with color and print."

Marc Jacobs Takes Louis Vuitton to New Campy Extremes for Spring 2011

>> The Susan Sontag quote on every Louis Vuitton attendee's seat was a clue: "The relation between boredom and camp taste cannot be overestimated," it said.
Spring 2011 Paris Fashion Week: Louis Vuitton

>> The Susan Sontag quote on every Louis Vuitton attendee's seat was a clue: "The relation between boredom and camp taste cannot be overestimated," it said. What followed, starting with model Kristina Salinovic — her jet-black hair and white-streaked bangs an ode to Sontag — was "total camp glamour, clothes for the extrovert; chinoiserie, the 1920s, everything that Paris stands for," in Jacobs's words. "Basically, I didn't want anything natural," he continued. "I wanted everything overly stylized. The iris prints — like the screens you’d see in a seventies apartment — but so bad!”

The runway was black faux marble, the backdrop gold and black fringed curtains with three stuffed tigers in front. Jacobs freely admitted that he was inspired by the early work of Japanese designers in Paris — like Kenzo Takada: "Of course, these are my references. I love the exoticism, the way Paris embraced Orientalism." He further explained: “My first job was with Kansai Yamamoto. He did all those sequined motif sweaters. I always reference other designers and don’t care if I admit it!”

Kristen McMenemy closed out the show — which featured shoes with giraffe legs as heels — in a pair of black trousers, her torso painted in black and white zebra stripes. As WWD put it, "It may not have been his most stellar or controversial outing for Vuitton, but it was playful, exuberant and glam, bam, thank-you ma’am. And a whole lot of fun."

Christina Hendricks Reveals How Karen Elson Became a Redhead

>> Long before she was playing Mad Men's Joan Holloway, Christina Hendricks was modeling in London in the mid-'90s for Dazed & Confused and Hussein Chalayan. "Oh, I have a story for you," she told Harper's Bazaar. "I was in Milan, and you would see the same girls at castings. There was one girl — she was like, 'I can't get any work. I'm so sick of this, I'm ready to quit. I love your hair color. What do you color your hair with?' and I was like, 'Oh, it's red. Here's my formula.' It was Karen Elson. A couple of weeks later, she had bright red hair . . . Sorry, Karen, but you did ask about my hair color. Then I saw her on the cover of Italian Vogue, and the rest is history!" Hendricks laughs: "Karen is amazing. I'm such an admirer of hers." [Harper's Bazaar]

As Miu Miu Continues to Grow Into Its Own, Miuccia Explores "Fame" with Spring 2011 Collection

>> Sales at Miu Miu — which makes most of its money with shoes and bags — have doubled in the past four years.

>> Sales at Miu Miu — which makes most of its money with shoes and bags — have doubled in the past four years. And Prada executives are doing everything they can to fight the perception that Miu Miu is a more affordable little sister to Prada — in some cases, Miu Miu's shoe prices are now higher than Prada's, and Prada Chief Operating Officer Sebastian Suhl looks at the two as "friendly competitors."

In light of the brand's upwards movement, Miuccia Prada unveiled her Spring 2011 Miu Miu collection in its largest venue yet — a specially erected stage in the Palais Royal, painted red in a nod to red carpets and the collection's exploration of "fame and everyone wanting it," according to Prada.

It was surely no coincidence that young rising stars Rihanna, Dakota Fanning, and Mia Wasikowska were front row for the star-spangled show, which also featured samples of the American Idol theme song on the soundtrack.
