Naomi Sims, "First Black Supermodel," Dead at 61

Halston referred to her as "the first [black supermodel]" in 1974: "She was the great ambassador for all black people. She broke down all the social barriers.”  When modeling agencies turned her down in the late '60s, she went straight to photographers, finally convincing Gosta Peterson to capture her for the cover of The New York Times Magazine's Fashions of the Times supplement in 1967; the image is now appearing in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's "Model as Muse" exhibit.  Sims sent out the image to ad agencies, and within a year, she was earning $1,000 and had a national AT&T TV commercial campaign wearing Bill Blass.

She paved the way for the likes of Pat Cleveland, Beverly Johnson, gave up modeling after five years in favor of pursuing what became a multimillion dollar beauty empire, and thought of her race as an advantage: "It’s ‘in’ to use me, and maybe some people do it when they don’t really like me. But even if they are prejudiced, they have to be tactful if they want a good picture.”

>> Tom Ford's A Single Man to Premiere Sept. 11 at Venice Film Festival —After much anticipation, Tom Ford's directorial debut, A Single Man, has received a big vote of confidence; it was chosen to compete at the Venice Film Festival, where it will simultaneously have its world premiere on Sept. 11.  The film's costumes were done by Arianne Phillips and its production design by the same group that does Mad Men; Ford called the film's selection to the festival "a great honor." Trailer: The Rachel Zoe Project, Season 2

>> Rachel Zoe has never been known to be anything but busy: her new lifestyle newsletter, The Zoe Report, launches tomorrow, and she's still finishing up filming for the second season of The Rachel Zoe Project, which premieres Aug. 24 at 10 PM on Bravo.

The trailer for the upcoming season has just hit the web, full of her catchphrases, footage from Paris (only New York was highlighted last season), Rachel riding on a Segway, and featuring cameos by Diane von Furstenberg, Karl Lagerfeld, Giambattista Valli, Liv Tyler, and Lorenzo Martone.

And for those who've noticed Zoe's tendency to wear loose dresses and voluminous clothes on the red carpet, it's because when she tries to wear something more form-fitting — like a sequined flapper-style dress in the trailer — her husband and assistant both tell her she can't because of all the bad press about how thin she is.

The selection will include his full bag line, shoes, and T by Alexander Wang exclusives — hopefully there will be plenty of stock, so it won't be a do-over of the scene at Opening Ceremony last season, when girls who missed out on Wang's shoes cried. [Style File, Opening Ceremony]

They took the same tactic for the first issue — so the image at left isn't the cover, but rather from an editorial within — but the theme seems to be "New Blood: The Young and the Reckless," with some inclusions listed that have been raising eyebrows — Miley Cyrus and The Jonas Brothers, for instance.  Also making the teaser: 13 year-old Style Rookie blogger Tavi.
