Fashion Mourns Michael Jackson

>> Just today, Swarovski announced that they were going to clothe Michael Jackson head to toe for his "This Is It" tour kicking off next month — his costumes and sets were to feature over 300,000 crystals, in 53 different shapes, 43 different sizes, and 27 different colors.  In April, The Imagist reported that Balmain stylist Emmanuelle Alt "would weep" if Jackson allowed Balmain to do his tour costumes because she was "100% obsessed" with him — a fact reflected in Balmain's flashy runway pieces.Jackson had catapulted himself back into fashion's eye in recent months after he was spotted in a number of different Balmain looks — no doubt courtesy of Emmanuelle Alt — and a favorite gold studded Givenchy jacket.  At the news of his death this afternoon, an outpouring of reactions — some incredulous — came from models, editors, and designers alike — those from a few, below.

Dean and Dan Caten Leave Lara Stone to Covort with Male Models for Fall 2009 DSquared2 Campaign

>> Lara Stone has developed a devoted cult following — Carine Roitfeld dedicated an entire issue of Vogue Paris to her, Stella McCartney recently gushed about wanted to "celebrate Lara" and her "fantastic breasts" — and as a result Lara's been able to convert more single girl campaigns.  For Fall 2009, she picked up lingerie with Eres and the followup to DSquared2's epic Spring 2009 campaign with Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell fighting.  Originally, designers Dean and Dan Caten were supposed to join her in the ads shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, but in the images they uploaded, it looks like they went with three male models instead.

>> Chanel Names Five It-Girls As AmbassadorsChristian Dior named it-girl Harley Viera-Newton a house DJ for Dior Beauty last August, and it was only a matter of time before another brand caught on to the concept. On Tuesday, Chanel announced five it-girls, perhaps in a nod to Coco's favorite number — Jen Brill, Poppy Delevigne, Vanessa Traina, Leigh Lezark, and Caroline Sieber — as part of their new beauty ambassador program.  The latter two are often spotted wearing Chanel, anyway. Gap To Change Up Holiday 2009 Campaign, May Be Pursued By Uniqlo's Owner Fast Retailing

>> Gap is still struggling to define itself — and for the first time in seven years, the company is looking at using a different creative agency — it has worked with Laird & Partners since 2002 — for its Holiday 2009 campaign, which could mean an entirely different approach to those simple backgrounded studio shots we've become accustomed to.But that may not be the only big change on the horizon for the company: Uniqlo's owner, Fast Retailing, which counts French brands Comptoir des Cotonniers and Princesse tam.tam as well as Theory among its portfolio, may be after the American retailer.  CEO Tadashi Yanai recently said that he wants Fast Retailing to become the world's biggest clothing manufacturer and retailer within the next decade: "To achieve our target, the Asian market is the most important and we have already begun to expand there.

In Europe and the US it is not realistic to establish hundreds or thousands of new stores solely via our own efforts, so we want to buy a big chain business."

The Indepedent reports that the "big chain business" Yanai refers to has been speculated to be Gap; in response, Yanai has said Gap is "within the scope" of the brands he might have in mind.

>> More Details, First Image of Fall 2009 Madonna for Louis Vuitton Campaign Leak —What is being called "Part Deux" of Madonna's run at Louis Vuitton — for Fall 2009 — was photographed by Steven Meisel on April 24, as confirmed by Madonna's manager, and consists of at least seven images of Madonna in long boots and gloves, a few dresses mainly in blue and magenta, the bunny ears atop her head, holding a different bag in each shot.  She leans on a sofa or is seated in an armchair with a curtain in the background, and apparently there's a video, too.
