>> ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL —The first of many Fall 2009 Gucci ads has dropped, this one featuring Anja Rubik. Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin still did the photographing honors, but the look is a hard-edged change from the pastoral, verdant ads of seasons past.  Expected in upcoming images: perennial Gucci faces like Jacquetta Wheeler, Raquel Zimmermann, Freja Beha Erichsen, Natasha Poly, and Abbey Lee Kershaw, with a few surprises — Myf Shepherd, Dree Hemingway, and Jamie Bochert. With winks to previous collections, Cruise 2010 for Balenciaga was all about balance. Futuristic, trim suiting was met with voluminous, feminine frocks and coats. Utilitarian colors and pocket details were met with ruffled collars and skirts. These contrasts sent the message that the Balenciaga woman, the modern woman, is far from one-dimensional.

Salable yet over-the-top with optimism these highly accessorized offerings will hopefully mean bright things for the Spring 2010 collection. Fall 2009 was serious and dramatic at Lanvin but if we know Elbaz, we know that he can't resist making a happy spring statement.
