Valentino Sticks to the Yacht at Cannes

>> Valentino made headlines earlier this week for his reaction to the fashion on the Costume Institute Gala red carpet — he shook his head, muttered "no, no, no," and wiggled his finger, adding: "I think now all the girls look very ugly.  I saw the pictures of the Metropolitan gala evening [in New York] last week and I never saw something more ugly, all the girls have their legs out with the most terrible proportions."

He also told the Guardian that he has "so many ideas I could design a collection in two days but don't miss it at all" — now that he's retired he "tr[ies] to have a good time."  Although he hasn't made any red carpet appearances, his yacht has been spotted docked in Cannes — wonder what he has to say about all the Cannes fashion?

Or maybe instead of joining the parties in Cannes, his idea of fun now is staying in his yacht and having a meal cooked by partner Giancarlo Giammetti's chef, Pablo — in her GOOP newsletter this week, Gwyneth Paltrow raves over "GG, as he is affectionately known" and his chef's "rustic Italian food to die for . . . that can get me over there on the darkest and rainiest of London nights."

Lindsay Ellingson

>> THE MODELIZER —While the recent time-for-a-hair-change options among models seem to be either chopping it all off or dying it bleach blonde, Lindsay Ellingson decided to buck the trend.  She went for a simple change, adding bangs.

Vogue's Sally Singer Shows Off Apartment, Discourages "Yo-Yo Dieting"

>> During New York Fashion Week in February, Vogue's fashion news and features director Sally Singer allowed Atlantic Monthly editor Benjamin Schwarz to follow her around for a piece in the magazine's June 2009 issue.  And more recently, she consented to being photographed in her eclectic Chelsea Hotel apartment by photographer Todd Selby.  Between the two features, a nice look at the inner workings of Sally Singer, who thinks that women should "buy less, but buy better .

In fact, she only bought one dress this season, at Barneys — a cocktail dress by Isabel Toledo, who "make[s] a garment that lasts" — and says that her idea of a stylish woman is one who “wears great things from five years ago, 10 years ago.”  She discourages trend-driven, recreational shopping — “yo-yo dieting of clothes buying”; Speaking at a “Conscientious Consumption” panel, Singer told the audience the current economy made her "quite optimistic, " because it has made women think, “My God — why did I need all this stuff?”

And she hopes that consumers become more conscientious: “Things that are very expensive can be very expensive for just the right reasons — because they were made beautifully by someone who really gave a lot of care to the design and by people who were fairly paid along the way to execute something that was rather difficult. Those prices that often seem high are fair prices.”

In fact, she admires Michella Obama's approach, because the First Lady doesn't favor the biggest or trendiest names, and doesn't chose pieces tied to a “look” or a “moment.” She hopes that women see Obama chose to wear designers like Isabel Toledo, whose clothes are expensive because they're well-made and she pays her cutters and sewers well, "and they’re inspired to do the same.”

The 74-year-old designer confirmed that he has "in fact suffered from hepatitis by poisoning, which, certainly is not a rare illness. Nevertheless it is one which requires some time for a complete recovery."  In the meantime, he says his “commitment both on the creative and management side [of his company] has never relented,” and everything "has continued to operate normally with business as usual . . . Consequently there has been no shift in delegation of my authorities to any one of the executives and everything in the company is proceeding with the usual energy."
