Peter Som Cobbles Together Fall 2009 Collection; Other Designers Not So Fortunate
>> Peter Som has had a tough past six months, between the fallout at Bill Blass and the pull out of his eponymous lines' investor. Two weeks ago, he wasn't even sure if he was going to be able to pull anything together for Fashion Week, but he's succeeded in producing something for Fall 2009 — a capsule collection of 16 looks, which he will be showing at private appointments.
Peter's not alone in his misfortune this season — for various other labels, big and small, Fall 2009 isn't panning out so well either. Some, like Peter, have had to cancel their runway show in favor of showroom appointments (Sari Gueron) or lookbooks (Francis by Christian Francis Roth, who just tried to stage a comeback last season). Some are just plain nixing their shows (Benjamin Cho, Hanii Y, Sue Stemp, Rubin Singer).
Poor newcomer Mikhael Kale had to cancel his show because his samples were damaged during shipping; he's remaking the collection for press and buyer appointments in two weeks' time. Italian knitwear label Malo, designed by Alessandro Dell'Acqua, is totally missing in action, even though it always draws Carine Roitfeld and Franca Sozzani front row. And Patrick Robinson has postponed Gap's presentation until April. Here's to hoping the news only gets better from here.

Rebecca Minkoff Debuts Spring Handbag Range At Henri Bendel
Because there's always time to shop during Fashion Week--Rebecca Minkoff's Spring 2009 handbag range will debut at Henri Bendel with its own in-store pop-up shop later this week. Minkoff will be there to sign handbags (lining bound, of course) and talk to clients about the new collection. Having seen her Spring 09 collection up close at the Intermezzo trade show earlier this year, we can say it will be more than worth the trip. Minkoff's faux-croc laptop cases, studded envelope clutches, and classic morning-after bags are certainly looking fresh, colorful, and investment-worthy this season.
Preen's Diffusion Line Drops On Net-a-Porter

In 2009, when you hear "diffusion line" your mind may jump to price points which linger around $100--but let Preen educate you on their bottom-line. This contemporary diffusion line, called Preen Line, debuted in Copenhagen last February to many drooling Preen fans. Now that the recession has hit, being able to justify a four hundred dollar cotton dress (especially when Lanvin pumps are going for less than that over at Barneys) may not come as easy as it did last year--but we're pretty sure that only accounts for some of us. After all, that pink jersey dress sold out in less than 24 hours.
The Waldorf Astoria Opens Fashion Week Suite
During the next seven days, legendary New York hotel, The Waldorf Astoria, will open a Fashion Week Suite which will offer--to CFDA members, designers, stylists, press, and buyers--complimentary blowouts, makeup, manicures, and of course, cocktails. Complimentary beauty services might be commonplace during London Fashion Week (where such things happen in the main press lounge) but they certainly are not in New York. With all the stress floating around this city, we say... bring it on.
New York Fashion Week: Lyn Devon Fall 2009

Twenty-three-year-old designer, Lyn Devon, got her start working for Ralph Lauren and Zac Posen before launching her own line in 2005. This year she was the recipient of an Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation Award. Her Fall 2009 collection demonstrates, similarly to Spring, her skill with tailored elements, strong color, and statuesque silhouettes. For more, click here.
Fashion In 50 Seconds 02/12/09 Halston's Teaser Video & More
Halston released a teaser clip of their Fall 2009 collection video which, to twenty-somethings, will probably feel like a feature length film, seeing that it's over three minutes long.
Justin Timberlake and the folks at William Rast dish on their comeback, their collection (left), and their first show in the tents.
Publicists, designers, buyers, and models--all of whom you will know by name--weigh in on the methods of surviving Fashion Week.
The only thing more defeating than trying to find a power source at tents--standing in line at the Barneys Warehouse Sale.
