One of the reasons we dragged our boots through the snow earlier this week to see the Fall 09 stalls at the Capsule trade show, was that we knew Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair would be in attendance. The Fall 09 men's and women's ranges were one of our first stops at the show and boy, they did not disappoint. For gals, think draped tartan blouses and frocks and super thin, utilitarian separates and for guys; collarless dress shirts in pale salmon and knit suit jackets with matching shorts. Needless to say, it was all we could to do to kindly step away from the rolling racks.

>> First Lady Michelle Obama — soon to be Vogue cover girl, most likely shot by Annie Leibovitz — has been in position for a day and already made a couple of careers: those of Isabel Toledo and Jason Wu, who are now household names.
Both designers' looks were special-ordered through Chicago boutique owner Ikram Goldman, who is expected the advise the First Lady over the next four years — she also helped with Obama's choice of Jimmy Choo shoes and Loree Rodkin jewelry — and neither Wu nor Toledo were told their designs were for the inauguration. The two designers were on The Today Show this morning, talking color choice, fabric choice, and how they were "awestruck," in the words of Jason. And that's not even to mention how all of this will impact their sales — a Spring version of Toledo's dress will hit Barneys in March, retailing for $1,500.
>> INSIDER WIRE —Marco Zanini, who is busy at work on his first collection for the recently-resurrected Rochas, took some time out to attend the Jil Sander men's show on Saturday in Milan. He wouldn't give away any hints on his work, only saying that it will span a range of day to eveningwear — which means, just like management wanted, the label won't be anything like when Olivier Theyskens was head designer. If you're on a budget, and stuck between wanting to buy clothing you can wear now and wanting to buy that which will still work this Spring, today is your day. You couldn't ask for more than a 100% silk jumpsuit for $80. Completely on trend, relatively affordable, and wearable in both cold and warm weather--we could even get behind the notion to buy more than one. Check out our roundup of jumpsuits on the Spring 09 catwalks, right here.
There's no possible way anyone could have missed the news that Michelle Obama wore a frock by Jason Wu at last night's inaugural balls but there's also no saying anyone is tired of looking at her in it! The 26 year old Taiwanese designer appeared on The Today Show this morning, alongside Isabel Toledo, giving both designers the opportunity to talk about the experience. Mrs. Obama's dress will most likely be donated to the Smithsonian, as is tradition. Check out Michelle Obama in Jason Wu's stunning, dream-like gown below.
Recession or no, we can always expect Riccardo Tisci to give us dark, gothic clothing for a fall season. In this Pre-Fall 2009 collection Tisci was influenced by two famous Latin women (Preuvian diva Yma Sumac and Frida) and their confident severity served as his jumping-off point. Periwinkle Chanel-like booties help lighten things up a bit. As with everyone this season, it's all about the accessories.
What's wrong with the menswear runways? In Italy, home of the all-black issue of Vogue, the runways are racially homogenous as usual.
The Spring 09 United Bamboo ad campaign stars artist Terrence Koh. Outlandish and alienating? Or hip?
Pioneer of the premium *boyfriend* jean, Current/Elliot is finally, actually, making menswear. The new range will drop this season.
