Checking In with Esteban Cortazar

Thu, 09/10/09 — 11:51:19 PM

>> Now that he's relieved of his duties at Emanuel Ungaro, what's Esteban Cortazar up to?  He was spotted at jewelry line Fenton/Fallon's boutique opening party in New York Tuesday night, where he said he is town for two weeks.

In today's hard copy of The Daily, he divulges that this New York Fashion Week is his first in two years.  He's definitely been getting around; he chatted recently with The Daily as he was checking into a Paris hotel for a long-term stay: "I can't give specifics, but I'll definitely be in Europe, and hopefully in Paris."

Tom Ford Still Being Secretive About A Single Man, Wants the Movie To Be Bought Based on Merit

Thu, 09/10/09 — 10:54:43 PM

>> Tom Ford's directorial debut A Single Man — and the first project from his newly-minted production company, Fade to Black — premieres in competition at the Venice Film Festival tomorrow; Variety notes that he's been super secretive of the movie those far, "forgoing interviews, press screenings and, perhaps most notable of all, advance sales."

Stuart Ford, who is handling the film's sales, says that interest is "huge," but they "made a decision not to do pre-sales, the principal reason being that we want the film's eventual distributor to make a decision based on the film itself, after seeing it. Even though Tom is an unproven quantity as a director, the film will play for itself — it's a high-class piece of filmmaking."

>> Kai Kuhne On Why He's Missing from the Fashion Week Calendar —One designer missing from New York's Fashion Week Calendar?  Kai Kuhne, who last season had "strong financial backing," according to Style.com, is no longer feeling the love. "An investor was pretending," he cryptically told The Cut last night. [The Cut]

Wayne Launches Handbags Alongside Layer-Friendly Spring 2010 Collection

Thu, 09/10/09 — 10:04:23 PM

>> Fashion Week has just barely begun, but so far, designers are still going hard for a couple of looks — cut-outs are still sticking, and leggings are being reborn with patches and mesh pieces.  Both were in the mix at Wayne, as was a skort, which Style.com has already deemed a Spring "fascination."

Wayne Lee channeled minimalist sculpture for Spring 2010 — but the draped jersey dresses, aforementioned cut-outs, and bright yellow against a shades of gray palette vaguely call to mind Alexander Wang's work.  A number of designers are adding accessories this season, and Wayne is among them: a new leather handbag collection spans five silhouettes, a duffle and slouchy hobo among them; and a few pieces of jewelry — sculpted rings and cuffs — will also be produced.

>> Olivier Theyskens Not Making Friendly; Which Up-and-Coming Designer Has a Mystery Backer? —Is Olivier Theyskens alienating colleagues?  A blind item in today's Daily indicates so: "Which now-unemployed Belgian designer refused to look his underlings and overlings in the eye? It earned him few fans on Seventh Avenue . . ."  Also of interest: "Which high-profile industry icon is believed by many to be the main investor backing one of fashion's youngest — and brightest — stars?" Prabal Gurung Definitely On the Verge with His Spring 2010 Collection

Thu, 09/10/09 — 12:38:04 PM

>> Prabal Gurung is on the verge: Glenda Bailey stopped by this afternoon at his sunlit Flag Art Foundation presentation, Harper's Bazaar posse in tow, to schmooze with the designer; Meredith Melling Burke — in cropped Fashion's Night Out tee, natch — got a personal tour of the collection by the designer; fan Rachel Zoe — who recently dressed Demi Moore in Prabal — stopped by with assistant Brad Goreski, causing the usually imperturbable fashion crowd to collectively gawk; and Cathy Horyn stepped out of the elevator as I was leaving.

For his second eponymous collection, the Bill Blass alum, inspired by "Maggie Betts, Zoe Saldana, and Indre Rockefeller," as listed in his show notes, stuck largely to what he does best: cocktail dresses, all in a palette of cobalt, white, and black.  The piece de resistance? A stunningly simple electric blue gown.

>> Anna Wintour Has A Shopping List for Tonight's Fashion's Night Out — In between kicking Fashion's Night Out off tonight at Macy's in Queens, stopping by Intermix to see Sienna Miller, Oscar de la Renta to see the designer sing, and Saks for the William Rast pop-up (she loves that Justin Timberlake), among other things, Anna Wintour does indeed plan to shop.  She's looking to buy "something in red, some new boots, and some kind of savage fur." Shalom Harlow in the House for John Patrick's Spring 2010 Organic Collection

Thu, 09/10/09 — 09:59:51 AM

>> A bubbly John Patrick zipped around among the crowd gathered in the unlikely presentation space of Keens Steakhouse restaurant — complete with bar at 11 am (not many partook) — chatting up friends, press, and his star mannequin, Shalom Harlow, who was posed away from the group in a mannish tightly-tailored suit and bowtie.  His energy alone increased the enthusiasm for his speakeasy-inspired Organic collection's faded floral shirtdresses, cropped pants, and easy separates.  And for all you model-watchers: newly-minted Steven Meisel favorite Lindsay Wixson was there.
