Peter Lindbergh Goes Light on Retouching Again, This Time with Supermodels for Harper's Bazaar

Tue, 08/11/09 — 05:30:51 PM

>> Peter Lindbergh seems to be quite taken with this no-makeup, minimal-to-no retouching concept: In April, he captured Eva Herzigova, Ines de la Fressange, and a slew of European actresses without makeup or retouching for French Elle. A month after, he told the New York Times that he was tired of subjects in fashion magazines looking like overly-Photoshopped “objects from Mars": “My feeling is that for years now it has taken a much too big part in how women are being visually defined today. Heartless retouching should not be the chosen tool to represent women in the beginning of this century.”

Lindbergh continues to lead the charge against excessive retouching, this time by capturing supermodels Amber Valletta, Nadja Auermann, Helena Christensen, Shalom Harlow, Claudia Schiffer, Tatjana Patitz, Cindy Crawford, and Kristen McMenamy without makeup or excessive retouching for Harper's Bazaar's September 2009 issue.

>> Tom Ford Starring in His Own Perfume Ads Again—Tom Ford made waves when he put himself on the cover of the March 2006 issue of Vanity Fair he guest-edited, and this time, he doesn't have Rachel McAdams dropping out from the shoot at the last minute to blame:  He's appearing in the new ads for his own Grey Vetiver — which he photographed himself, of course. [Models.com, Fashionista Twitter]

UPDATE: It appears Tom didn't take it as far as we originally thought — he does the photographing for his other campaigns, but in this case, Terry Richardson, who snapped Tom when he appeared in his own fragrance campaign back in 2007, did the honors again. [Models.com]

Christian Dior Decides to Do Without Traditional Ad Campaign for Fall 2009

Tue, 08/11/09 — 04:17:47 PM

>> For those holding out for Christian Dior's Fall 2009 campaign — since most other major brands have revealed their seasonal ads at this point — you're setting yourself up for a big disappointment. The brand — which posted a loss in profits last week — decided to forego a traditional ad campaign this season because Dior CEO Sidney Toledano found the formula "wanting," according to WWD.

Instead, the advertising budget — an undisclosed number — was poured into a new set of the Lady Dior handbag campaign featuring Marion Cotillard.  The original set, photographed by Peter Lindbergh, started running last November and a new set with Cotillard as "Lady Red," snapped by Annie Leibovitz, has been appearing in magazines starting since the August issues (above).  A sequel to Cotillard's short film for the brand, which hit the Internet in May, is planned for December.

Toledano seemed satisfied in May with the brand's move toward using more star power and away from seasonal campaigns that typically feature models: “Now we have to give more meaning. People are looking for iconic products and they want to see a product representing the values of a company.”

Really fancy that big blue one, a steal at 100k EUROS."  Last night, Diane Kruger wore a Fall 2009 Atelier Versace dress to the Los Angeles premiere of Inglourious Basterds, giving us a first glimpse of the collection; Versace's sketch of the dress is at Red Carpet Fashion Awards. 2009 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Returning to New York City

Tue, 08/11/09 — 02:09:51 PM

>> This morning, Victoria's Secret Angels Marisa Miller and Alessandra Ambrossio, plus Emanuela de Paula and Lindsay Ellingson appeared on CBS's The Early Show to announce that the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show — which tapes in November and airs on CBS in December — is returning to New York City for the first time since 2005.  They didn't reveal any specific dates or location, but last year's show was at the Fontainbleau Hotel in Miami.

No word on whether de Paula and Ellingson are new Angels — both Selita Ebanks and Karolina Kurkova neglected to renew their Angel contracts this year — and two Angels are currently pregnant: Heidi Klum and Adriana Lima.  Heidi is due in October and told People of her prospects on the show: "The birth will be very, very close to when the show is. I don’t know if I’ll be able to walk in my underwear quite that fast! We’ll see."  Meanwhile, Adriana Lima, who is due in December, previously told People that she was skipping the show "unless I can be dressed as Santa Claus," but is now rumored to be involved in the show somehow.  Meanwhile, the costume preparation is already said to be under way . . .

I'd love four or five. We'll see. It's not always my decision." [PopSugar]

Domenico Dolce, Stefano Gabbana Continue Yacht Vacation with Giovanna Battaglia and Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld

Tue, 08/11/09 — 12:20:53 PM

>> Two weekends ago, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana docked their yacht in Capri to party with Naomi Campbell and her boyfriend Vladislav Doronin, and it appears that the fun hasn't stopped: On Sunday, they popped up in the Aeolian Islands of Italy with former house model — and current Vogue L'Uomo editor — Giovanna Battaglia and Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld, where they did a little window shopping before stopping for lunch.  Giovanna has earned plenty of attention for her dressed-up Fashion Week-ready style — of which she told the New York Times:

I’m classic. I’m not a rock ’n’ roll chick. And I like to mix old and new. I’ll never wear a full look from a fashion show. It has to be personalized. Accessories have always been a big thing for me. I have 352 pairs of shoes. I’m not kidding. I have a wall filled with them, and then another for handbags. I never throw anything away.

But as for vacation attire, it's all about denim cutoffs, and later, she strolled to the beach wearing a lace dress as coverup

>> Kate Moss Is Sweeping the September 2009 Covers —We've known that Kate Moss is getting the September 2009 W cover — preview, by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, at left — for a while, but she's surprised us with at least a couple of other major September covers (and you never know, maybe more are on the way).  Her Vogue UK cover came out last week, and now comes the news that she has the Vogue Russia cover as well, although no preview is available yet.  The take-away message?  Editors still feel that Kate sells, and are willing to put her on their biggest issues of the year.
