Viktor & Rolf

Viktor & Rolf Goes Democratic — and Online — for Spring 2009

>> Ever the trailblazers, Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren took a page out of their Fall 2008 Viktor & Rolf collection and just said NO! to showing on a runway for Spring 2009.

Instead, they'll be presenting the showcase online on their web site Oct. 2 as "an actual show filmed in the Grand Salon of our virtual house."  Guests will be granted backstage access to watch the designers do last-minute fittings on the "Funny Face"-titled collection, and can also view the models have hair and makeup done — "It is a take on what a fashion show might be in the future."

The decision could be due to their transition into new ownership — or could it really be a move into the future?

London Fashion Week: Peter Jensen Spring 2009

Last night we arrived at the Peter Jensen show in Westminster to a few strands of hanging lights in a warehouse and endless bottles of champagne.

Last night we arrived at the Peter Jensen show in Westminster to a few strands of hanging lights in a warehouse and endless bottles of champagne. It was a beautiful, paired down space, large enough to house the slew of Jensen fans that have become increasingly dedicated to him as the seasons have gone on. This season, Jensen showed a collection inspired by American actress Jodie Foster at different stages of her career. Namely, as she was seen (and dressed) in Freaky Friday, The Hotel Hampshire, The Accused, and The Silence Of The Lambs. The collection, in all its various stages, was boyish, smart, and sexy--much like the actress herself (not the mention align with Jensen's aesthetic). The only thing that deserves a mention is that a collection that pivots on some kind of obsession with Jodie Foster may give more than a few people a bad taste in their mouths. A little discomfort at the very least. And that's all we'll say about that because we actually think that Peter Jensen is a noteworthy up and comer and this collection, like his others, was truly above the fray. Opening Ceremony, here we come.

London Fashion Week: Spijkers en Spijkers Spring 2009

For our first show this London Fashion Week we attended the Spijkers en Spijkers Spring 2009 show.

For our first show this London Fashion Week we attended the Spijkers en Spijkers Spring 2009 show. We didn't know how to pronounce their name, we will be honest, but that matters less than one would think. As for the important part, the clothing, the origami-like folds that adorned some garments (in particular a gold and black two-piece outfit), abundant ruffles, and nude/orange/black lace pieces were right on target for Spring 2009 (even if they were slightly derivative). It will be no surprise to us if this collection does well in the boutiques. Check out our first video from London Fashion Week below.

New York Spring 2009 Trend Report: Shine

Everything from skirts and pants to day dresses and evening gowns shined lke the top of the Chrysler Building at New York Fashion Week. And given that we have no clue how Lehman Brothers is going to survive the week we too say its a Hard Knock Life, thus the fantasy and aspirations of a newly impovershied America turns to glitz and glamour. Ralph Rucci, Carmen Marc Valvo, Aurelio Costarella, Reem Acra, Naeem Khan, Joanna Mastroianni, Dennis Basso, Derek Lam, Ports 1961, Venexiana, Calvin Klein, and Isaac Mizrahi are all in our gallery.

London Fashion Week: On The Sidelines

Just a quick note on the protestors here at London Fashion Week--they certainly were not what we were expecting.

Just a quick note on the protestors here at London Fashion Week--they certainly were not what we were expecting. That is, in our experience, you are far more likely to see protestors (mostly women at these Fashion Week rallies) demanding the ban of fur but, in London, we walked up to the entrance of the Natural History Museum (our Bryant Park) to find a slew of women dancing to techno beats and holding up signs that demanded the ban of size zero models. The girls, dressed up in what we can only describe as that "slutty" + archetype formula we see in America on Halloween (i.e. Slutty Kitten, Slutty Minnie Mouse, Slutty Witch), were dancing and hollering in the most joyful of Fashion Week spirits. Their outfits might not have been the most stylish but we thought their good attitude deserved a mention. Our only complaint being the slogan itself: "ban size zero models" which we think is beside the point entirely. This whole thing is about acceptance, right?
