Coutorture Community's Must Reads 8/8

No matter how many times we see a collection, good design remains with us.
No matter how many times we see a collection, good design remains with us. Celebrate the best of Fall 2008 with today's Must Read posts from: Fashion bloggers maintain their blogs for many reasons, and one of them is with the intention of garnering attention from the larger fashion media. PR Couture offers excellent tips on how to do just that. Butterfly Diary discovers skincare products by Molton Brown. At exactly 3.3 oz per bottle, she dares you to wave them in the face of the next TSA agent you see. Some collections just captivate and hold your attention, no matter how long ago they were shown. Always In Style is still reeling from the Fall 08 Proenza Schouler show. As handbags become larger, they also become heavier, because the more room we have the more items we want to carry. Hello, Lover takes a hard look at exactly what she is carrying around and perhaps the reality causes her to reconsider. Some people are so into indie designers, and Smashing Darling just happens to be a collective of those types of people. Today they as a Finance Manager from Portland, Maine how he wears his indie.

Fringe Elements

Americans are prone to bouts of personal mythologizing in our mindscape of imagined new frontiers.
Americans are prone to bouts of personal mythologizing in our mindscape of imagined new frontiers. Manifest Destiny has never left us. This tendency showcases itself no more beautifully than in our fashion. The ideals of the rough rider have not ceased to appeal even in this time of $4 gallons of gas. As we enter August ready to vacation OPEC cannot kill our need to roam, even if favored mode of transit Harley Davidson's Q2 results were not quite up to their usual standards. But even if that bike can't come home with you, one can at least pretend to its aesthetics. And indeed garments from fringed boots to biker jackets are all the rage in our community with The Coveted and Shoeblog weighing in on both topics. Because really what is funnier than a bunch of aging Boomers and striking fashionistas saying they are bad to the bone. No offense George Thorogood but at this point the gig is up. Aging happened! There is no more "Through Darkest America With Truck And Tank" thanks to Eisenhower. The open road is a pleasant experience for families these days, we personally have experienced some fine rest stops in our cross country jaunts, some with Wi-Fi. It is time to accept that much of that culture of establishment bashing has become the establishment, one we are supporting with Louboutin fringed boots and and Member's Only Biker Jackets. And that is OK, its alright to sincerely like these things and be well off so get off your narcissistic aging high horse. Harley is publicly traded, the highway system keeps America's businesses in gear, and even your humble editor plans road trips to wayward third tier American cities of yore just for bar food. Thus we celebrate the fringe elements of Americana with expensive designer clothing that has repurposed the strange ideals of rebellion into thousand dollar jackets.
Jimmy Choo

Strap Into Fall

For the sake of convenience we're going to pretend we didn't see these Jimmy Choo Glenys Python Sandals.

For the sake of convenience we're going to pretend we didn't see these Jimmy Choo Glenys Python Sandals. We're going to pretend we didn't see them because for once we actually prefer the low-end version. Jeffery Campbell who makes super comfortable and super affordable trendy shoes, has taken this Choo shoe and exaggerated its look. We're pretty sure there are twice as many straps as the Choo, we're pretty sure the Campbell version is one of the darn sexiest Fall 08 sandals we've seen to date. The Marly Black Patent Leather Platform is a mere $110 (compare that to the Choo at $1,550) and will serve you well when it's still warm enough for sandals though a chill in the air calls for something a little more dense than a flimsy summer heel. Below, the top five strap-happy sandals we've been eying, at a diverse range of price points.

Fashion In 50 Seconds 8/8/08

Barney's is going sixties for the holidays, confident that the election (and Mad Men) will stir up plenty of peace and love in those baby boomer cum yuppie hearts.
Barney's is going sixties for the holidays, confident that the election (and Mad Men) will stir up plenty of peace and love in those baby boomer cum yuppie hearts. Simon Doonan, the creative director, is making sure that theme is fully explored by way of psychedelic backgammon sets, green t-shirts, Fendi bags with peace sign keychains, and more. Luella's capsule for Urban Outfitters launched today and a few girls are hot on its trail. The red check muslin stuff (left) looks pretty darn cute but apparently that's not new season? Sigh, we can't keep up with Urban Outfitters anymore. Upon further investigation we discover that this is a UK-only offer which is fine because anyone who is going to spend U.S. two hundred on a muslin scarf at Urban Outfitters probably travels a lot anyway. This one's for you mom... apparently July didn't look so good for retailers and famed tunic megastore, Chico's, is suffering along with the best of them. The bigger department stores project more confident numbers going into the 'back-to-school' season but the less-back-to-school friendly among them, Chicos included, are faced with even greater loses. We don't know about you guys but when we went back-to-school shopping, our mother would always throw in a couple things for herself. Maybe we should write them a letter saying "Hey guys, guess what? It's going to be ohhhhhkay." (hehe) The New York Times got crazy with the whole 'olympics' thing with a whopping six-image fashion spread. Is it just us or is the wussy approach to everything in the Style section of the NYT (save for Horyn) totally annoying? Six images? Make them bigger! For a site that has all the fixes and pretty lightbox-y features one could ask for (not to mention the connections and time to spare) you'd think they'd be able to squeeze out slightly bigger galleries and slight punchier content. Why we let this get to us every morning when we write the news is beyond us. Our apologies.

While the notion of collaborations might be passe, there is still a large number of untapped designers.
While the notion of collaborations might be passe, there is still a large number of untapped designers. If you still get tingly at the mention of the next greatest collaboration, you'll love today's Must Read posts from: That's Chic gets excited over the upcoming Comme Des Garcons and H&m collaboration. She has photos of the collection with enough detail to get anyone excited. Even though she can't seem to grasp who would wear the color, Poetic & Chic points out the prominence of peach in this Fall's collections. Did peach make your Fall palette? Nuvany Ni'ce interviews 21MC designer Emeka Alams. While you may not have heard of him, his outlook and work ethic are of note. You can always count on She Finds for a post to make you go "Hmm....". Do you think a necklace can actually have an effect on your metabolism? Stained Couture had an encounter with an extreme version of "Summer Face". Her answer? Bobbi Brown's Vitamin Enriched Face Base.
