Harper's Bazaar

>> BLOWING THE COVER —As rumored earlier, Tyra Banks does indeed have the September 2008 Harper's Bazaar cover — the subscriber's edition is at left.  Perhaps it's the newsstand version that has her dressed as Michelle Obama?  Regardless, look at the trend Vogue Italia has set: first POP, now Bazaar.

Michelle Williams

Michelle Williams is a Boy's Girl for Band of Outsiders

Sternberg took all the pictures himself with a seventies-era Polaroid camera, set on capturing Michelle informally: "There [wasn't] hair and makeup . . . no lights or anything."  His regular stylist Tina Chai was present, to ensure the look book had the un-stylized look he was going for.

The laid-back theme is being carried over into Band of Outsiders's Spring 2009 presentation, which will involve a film featuring two or three of Sternberg's celebrity friends instead of a catwalk.  As for the reasoning?  The designer told WWD: "I don’t make runway clothes. These are clothes you wear on the street, so I’m just super-uncomfortable with it. It puts it in totally the wrong context — I want to do something closer to where the clothes are, and let people actually touch and feel them as opposed to seeing them on a 14-year-old anorexic model."

Coutorture Community's Must Reads 8/4

Mondays, no matter how hard you try, are filled with playing catch-up.
Mondays, no matter how hard you try, are filled with playing catch-up. Once 5 pm hits, play fashion catch-up with today's Must Read posts from: My Empty Closet turns her attention to menswear, realizing that so many womenswear styles are men inspired. Similar to men's lapels, she also believe women's necklines are rising. Mondays can be tough, but The Manolo always knows how to put a smile on our faces. Of course, it's no secret all it takes is a beautifully designed pair of shoes. It's often said that good merchandising can make all the difference, and that statement couldn't be more true when referring to online. Style Bubble discovers a site so appealing, it made her change her mind. Look Online proves she didn't need an email reminder for Fashion Week events. However, accessories bring back fond memories of past seasons. A chance boutique discovery keeps Style Bite in a good mood. Such a good mood, that she decided to share with the rest of us, even though she could have kept it her own secret.
Yves Saint Laurent

I was kind of ashamed of my bourgeois family as a teenager, I guess — I had dreadlocks, shopped in thrift stores and pretended I had no money.
I was kind of ashamed of my bourgeois family as a teenager, I guess — I had dreadlocks, shopped in thrift stores and pretended I had no money. At that time, I would have spat on a girl who was buying Yves Saint Laurent. I always laugh today thinking if I ran into my younger self, she would slap me. Wearing designer clothes was like selling my soul to the devil.
H&M

Cecilia Dean Loves H&M, and Style.com Loves Her for Loving H&M

>> Last Saturday, Cecilia Dean attended the "decadent chic"-themed Watermill Center benefit in the Hamptons, and Style.com tracked her down to get the lowdown on her outfit: Other than the shoes, which are Balenciaga, I'm wearing head to toe H&M.  It doesn't matter if it's designer or H&M, if you spend, you know, $1,000 on something or $59.99 on something, it's just always fun to wear something new and just have fun with it.

It's not every day that you can get an editor to confess to wearing a label like H&M, especially to an event — blame the economic times if you want — but Style.com must have loved it, because Cecilia's ensemble landed her a place on the week's Ten Best Dressed list.

Zucca Nylon Taffeta Dress

This morning, when we popped onto La Garconne to see what had posted over the weekend, 'oh la la' dribbled out of our mouths.

This morning, when we popped onto La Garconne to see what had posted over the weekend, 'oh la la' dribbled out of our mouths. La Garconne has a clean little way of editorializing their products. It's a simple splash, like the one we have on our front page, which shows a garment of note. Although we wholeheartedly agree with the way sites like Net-a-Porter editorialize their goods, we also have a soft spot for La Garconne's tidy, honest personality a la their front page. What helps give this simple design a little more panache is when the garment being featured is bright and wild like this Zucca Nylon Taffeta Dress.

Zucca is part of La Garconne's new Atelier section. The line, started by Onozuka Akira (protege of Issey Miyake) in 1989, is known for embodying the modern Japanese aesthetic which plays with proportion and textile at the expense of giving consumers those 'pretty cocktail dresses' they love so much. The Zucca dress is no exception. We'd expect someone with a lot of personality to show up to an event in this dress...she would likely be referred to as The Gal In A Blazing Taffeta Dress and she'd easy to spot standing in a sea of girls wearing their Herve Ledger and Louboutin outfits.

Vogue

>> INSIDER WIRE —Here's a fun anecdote: Recently Annie Leibovitz assembled Vogue’s photographers for a group portrait, instructing David Bailey to settle himself between the legs of Grace Coddington. “F*** me,” laughed Bailey, “I’m back where I was 46 years ago.” The room fell into an appalled politically-correct silence. “Whoops!” he chortles, relishing the story.
