Chanel Iman

Something's Up With Chanel Iman and Ryan Leslie

>> The mystery just gets more mysterious: Chanel Iman and singer/producer Ryan Leslie have been spotted out publicly together twice in the past two weeks, most recently last night at the VIBE anniversary party, where she arrived on Leslie's arm.  The two are reportedly just friends, and Chanel told Fashion Week Daily of Leslie, who was performing: "I'm just here to support him." Only thing is, pictures popped up of the two together again this evening, dining at DaSilvano.  No doubt about it, something is going on.  If the two aren't dating, is Chanel working on an album?  Ryan did discover and make singer/model Cassie, after all .

Karl Lagerfeld

Karl Lagerfeld: Still Bobbing Along for Numero September 2008

>> Two things are for sure: Karl Lagerfeld is still loving black and white photography and those bobs — he's used them for his Fall 2008 Chanel couture show, the Fall 2008 Fendi ads, the Fall 2008 Chanel ads, and now he's put Karmen Pedaru in one alongside Heidi Mount and Vlada Roslyakova.

The three girls feature in "La Couture," a film noir-inspired couture editorial he photographed for Numero #96.  Don't worry, it's not all Chanel couture, but those three must be his go-to couture girls — they seem like Karl's types, and they were all in Chanel's most recent couture show.

Coutorture Community's Must Reads 8/13

If you're not careful, your beloved fashion can get you into a shouting match with a stranger.
If you're not careful, your beloved fashion can get you into a shouting match with a stranger. As strange as it sounds, it wouldn't be the first time. Don't believe us? You don't have to, but you can read about our Network Partners' experiences in fashion in today's Must Read posts from: Whenever you say "Fall" to a stylish woman, most likely the first accessory on her mind are boots. Toronto Style is no exception, selecting her favorite Fall styles. An accidental discovery, Blooming Lily stumbled upon BB Dakota while on vacation in Chicago. The line appeals to her sensible and chic sides, with a darling maxi dress for under $50. Thanks to reading another blog, Clothes Line Finds discovered a Vancouver based designer, Wanny Tang. In addition to creating great clothing, she's having a sale and greeting shoppers with goodies. Poor, poor Cuffington. She weaves a story of a Chloe bag, a fake Russian accent and an angry man on the bus strange enough to keep us away from logo bags forever. The natural reaction to a bad smell is to eliminate it or cover it up. The Scented Salamander enlightens us on a practice in Mumbai, where the government is attempting to eliminate the stench of a landfill with an herbal fragrance.
Chanel Iman

>> THE MODELIZER —There have been rumors about her and Kanye West, but in the last month, the gossip has placed Chanel Iman with singer and producer Ryan Leslie instead.  The two were snapped together on July 30 at The Grand, and then again last night at VIBE's 15th Anniversary party.  Maybe they're together .

Paris, New York, Milan Force London to Renege on Model Health Certificate Requirement

>> A lot of attention has been placed lately on increasing model diversity, but what about that other troubled topic — model weight?  Today, the British Fashion Council announced that their initiative to ban "size zero" models from the London catwalks next month has been abandoned after the other three major fashion capitals refused to follow suit.  The plan was to require models to obtain a doctor's certificate proving they were in good health, but the Chambre Syndicale in Paris thought imposing model health certificates lay outside their realm, the Camera Nazionale della Moda in Milan preferred self-regulation, and according to Steven Kolb, executive director of New York's CFDA: We looked at things like doctor’s certification and body mass index and decided that, for us, it wasn’t the appropriate recommendation.

Today, the British Fashion Council announced that their initiative to ban "size zero" models from the London catwalks next month has been abandoned after the other three major fashion capitals refused to follow suit.

The plan was to require models to obtain a doctor's certificate proving they were in good health, but the Chambre Syndicale in Paris thought imposing model health certificates lay outside their realm, the Camera Nazionale della Moda in Milan preferred self-regulation, and according to Steven Kolb, executive director of New York's CFDA:

We looked at things like doctor’s certification and body mass index and decided that, for us, it wasn’t the appropriate recommendation. We felt it was wrong to force a girl to have a physical examination, especially because the signs of a problem aren’t always obvious.

After the negative reaction of its peers, London deferred — with fashion week coming up next month, if the city had imposed such strict standards alone, models would likely have skipped the city altogether.

Shearling

Mayle Wintertime Brilliance

After posting on our reluctance to purchase anything resembling a 'fashion coat' this winter, Mayle solved all of our problems.

After posting on our reluctance to purchase anything resembling a 'fashion coat' this winter, Mayle solved all of our problems. First of all our love for shearling is strong. When we saw shearling this season from Richard Chai, Matthew Williamson, and Preen, we were just about beside ourselves. Shearling is like the morally sound alternative to fur and it's likewise really, really warm. Although we've never donned a pair of UGGs, we've long been fans of shearling. So Mayle, ever the clever indie star, came up with a little shearling caplet which can drape around the collar of your favorite trench or not-so-warm 'fashion coat'. It's darling, really, and might just solve your warmth problem come snowstorm time. The only snag in this plan is that the caplet itself is $240 dollars. Now, that might be nothing to some fashionistas and if so, all the power to you. We do know, however, that not every chicster will want to spend that much post-coat purchase. The only answer we can come up with is to act like Steve Madden and hit up the garment district on a DIY adventure, or, make the fashion coat purchase now and save the caplet investment for later, when you've long forgotten the former investment.

London Fashion Week

Our Fall Top Five: Modernist Fall 08

Wrapping up the list of our favorite shows from Fall 08 is British brand Modernist.
Modernist Autumn Fall 2008 Fashion Show

Wrapping up the list of our favorite shows from Fall 08 is British brand Modernist. We've said from the start that this list has no real rhyme or reason save for the fact that the five shows each impacted our impression of Fall 08 as a season. Bringing you this list was as much about having the galleries back up on the front page as it was talking about them again. We think it's reason enough. So, after bringing up Prada, Preen, Yves Saint Laurent, and Miu Miu, we're going to finish up by talking about the Modernist Fall 08 show. British brand Modernist, headed by Abdul Koroma and Andrew Jones, showed their second collection as part of London Fashion Week this Fall 08. The collection, feminine and appropriately paired down with a strict palette of red, charcoal, and black was a stark and striking contrast to the opulence that overran New York Fashion Week the week prior. Everything from the cool grey backdrop, to the thick painted eyebrows and slicked hair, to the shapely garments that layered over one another quite beautifully, made this collection on of our favorites. To our surprise the brand is stocked sparingly in the United States and abroad, but we're confident that will change if they keep moving in this direction.
