Rachel Zoe

Alberta Ferretti Fall 2008 Gives Girls the Subway Slump

>> If you're going to spend a lot of time bored on the subway, why not do it for pay, and look fabulous while you're at it?  That must have been stylist Edward Enninful's concept for the Fall 2008 Alberta Ferretti campaign, which features Anna Maria Jagodzinska and new talent Magdalena Frackowiak, Siri Tollerod, and Viktoriya Sasonkina juxtaposed in jewel tones with jaded expressions affixed on their faces.  The best shot Steven Meisel captured has to be of Siri, slumped over in plastic chair.

Coutorture Community's Must Reads 7/29

What is the use in being a consumer of fashion if you aren't educated about fashion?
What is the use in being a consumer of fashion if you aren't educated about fashion? If you're looking to wise up or just get crafty, today's Must Reads are for you. Fashionalities falls in love with JCrew's styling. We can't blame her, afterall, what gal doesn't like colors that pop? Any fashionista in a moderately cold climate can appreciate the usefulness of a good pice of knit. Making Things covers the institutions where a knitwear education can be obtained. Ma Petite Chou believes you can never have too many clutches. If you didn't believe her, check out her insane amount of clutch suggestions. They'll make you a believer! The Fashion Bomb puts the spotlight on Runway boutique. As we previously mentioned, we can't help but love bright colors, and this boutique them by the dozens. Getting back on the crafty track, Stereoette prides herself in learning jewelry making and sewing from books. She turns her attention to learning to sew knitwear. Are we sensing a theme yet?

Vogue Feeling the Financial Burn, Will Anna Wintour Pay?

>> There's no question about it: Magazines are hurting in these economic times.  The first, unofficial magazine circulation numbers are out for the first half of the year, and Anna Wintour could be in trouble.

>> There's no question about it: Magazines are hurting in these economic times.  The first, unofficial magazine circulation numbers are out for the first half of the year, and Anna Wintour could be in trouble.

Vogue and Teen Vogue (which is Anna's pet project) are both losing circulation by double-digit percentages (15.1% and 15.7%, respectively), beat only by Oprah's magazine O at 16.4%.  Amy Gross, O's former editor-in-chief, supposedly voluntarily stepped down from her position in April, but these numbers suggest that perhaps the move was less than voluntary.

So is Anna Wintour's job on the line?  The previous editor, Grace Mirabella, was ousted unexpectedly — the magazine was in good form at the time — at 58 after seventeen years in the saddle. And before Grace, Diana Vreeland was at the helm for eight years, replaced at 68.  Anna, at 58, just passed the twenty-year milestone as Vogue's editor-in-chief, causing many to speculate that she's in the sweet spot for dismissal.

A recent New York Times profile of Conde Nast chairman Si Newhouse referred to Vogue as one of the "jewels in the Newhouse crown," and also mentioned that Si dislikes confrontation so much, a number of dismissed editors have said their first indication of trouble came when they were fired, which explains Grace Mirabella's abrupt discharge.

Vogue is one of Conde Nast's most profitable magazines, and Si is known for his "willingness to absorb years of losses on magazines he considers promising," sometimes choosing personal interest over the financial numbers, but will this apply to Vogue?  It will, for sure, be interesting to see.

Carine Roitfeld, Christy Turlington, Karl Lagerfeld Among Vanity Fair's 2008 Best-Dressed

>> The September 2008 issue of Vanity Fair may not have given us the supermodel cover we were hoping for, but in exchange, it does give us the annual International Best-Dressed List.  The fashion industry was well-repped, with designers (Karl Lagerfeld, Stacey Bendet), models (Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Christy Turlington), editors (Carine Roitfeld, Alexandra Kotur), and even a muse or two (Tilda Swinton, Iris Apfel, Fran Lebowitz) all making the cut.  But perhaps even more fun than perusing the list is browsing the quippy reasons Vanity Fair gave for picking each person.  A choice few, below: Alexandra Kotur, Vogue style director, "Because [she's a] Kotur de force." Carine Roitfeld, "Because she's the rogue editor-in-chief." Carla Bruni-Sarkozy "Because we like her French twist." Christy Turlington, "Because she put the chic in sirshasana." Fran Lebowitz, 2008 Hall of Fame inductee.
