We Can Dance! Without Pants

Inside jokes are funny things as it is almost impossible to reconstruct the genesis of a witticism particular to a clique.
Inside jokes are funny things as it is almost impossible to reconstruct the genesis of a witticism particular to a clique. Nevertheless we feel a burning desire to share with you a strange connection we have made in our heads here at Coutorture about the danger of going without pants. Please bear with us while we explain. Your Editor in Chief and Creative Director have a unique take on Men Without Hat's Safety Dance. For reasons unknown to to them, in some fit of fashionista perversity they have managed to transpose dance for pants in several instances of the lyrics. Thus I say, we can dance if we want to We can leave your friends behind 'Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance Well they're no friends of mine Has become 'Cause your friends don't pants and if they don't pants Well they're no friends of mine And no we aren't sure how we arrived at this conclusion either but many choruses of "we can pants" have been sung. But clearly if friends don't pants well then they're no friends of mine! Or at least that is what we imagine the Tights Aren't Pants Manifesto we discovered via community member Fashionation might have to say on the issue. And yet as good Williamsburg residents we just aren't sure if, despite our revised lyrics, people without pants are in fact no friends at all. It would seem dancing about in fields in crazy tights or leggings might very well be the sort of liberating "we can dance" experience that was made for fashion fans crazy enough to style in the weirdest of leggings. Even if they use them as pants.
Old Navy

Old Navy's Crowd Pleaser

We realize we peddle some fairly expensive stuff on Coutorture but style isn't just about the price tag.
We realize we peddle some fairly expensive stuff on Coutorture but style isn't just about the price tag. Discovering when store has good merchandising is the greatest talent of a good market editor. Thankfully our small staff doesn't have to keep on top of everything by ourselves. Community member Chic and Untroubled has tapped into Old Navy's unexpectedly impressive accessory design with a feature on their summer sandals. And indeed we are impressed with the combination of design and price. Half the time lower priced retailers simply rely on bad facsimiles to sell their wears (Steve Madden we are looking at you). From metallic slides to strappy gladiators with a flat peep-toe espadrille thrown in for good measure, Old Navy manages to give us styles we like without feeling like an overt copy cat. And better yet, the footwear fits into their cheap, simple and fun branding so their regular customers and market editors alike can both happy! For More Community Shoutouts Click Here

Loeffler Randall

Loeffler Randall Ecommerce Sale

Loeffler Randall is on sale, ladies and gents (who know their girlfriends well).

Loeffler Randall is on sale, ladies and gents (who know their girlfriends well). We happen to believe wholeheartedly in the power of ecommerce and think, in addition to breaking news, reviews, photo editorial, interviews, and fashion week coverage, our readers want to know what's happening online in relation to their wardrobe. After all, this is a participatory industry (our network partners are experts on this topic), one where your knowledge of what's going on can be portrayed in your sense of style just as assertively as your ability to discuss the industry. To that end, we thought you might want to know that Loeffler Randall is pretty seriously on sale in the ecommerce dimension. Clothing and handbags aside (and they are fantastic) for a few hundred dollars you can pick up shoes that will surely last you beyond this season. There's a classic quality to Loeffler Randall's designs that we think is just as important to endorse as a new pop-up store or collaboration project. It can all happen simultaneously, in other words, because shopping and editorial, if you think about it, really do go hand and hand.

Stand Alone Francisco Costa!

We rarely cover red carpets as frankly we are almost never interested in anyone that traverses them.

We rarely cover red carpets as frankly we are almost never interested in anyone that traverses them. But last night at the CFDA 2008 Fashion Awards we had plenty to be interested in as it was the real celebrities of our world, the designers, that were doing most of the preening. But there is an unfortunate trend for red carpets at fashion events. More and more designers appear to be scared to walk the red carpet alone. They cling to their "celebrity" guests, afraid it seems, that without their groomed counterpart that the photographers might forget to snap their image. Clearly this isn't the case as menswear winner Tom Ford, accessories winner Tory Burch, and lifetime achievement winner Carolina Herrera got their pictures taken without a problem. Plenty of other designers didn't seem scared to walk by themselves either including Diane Von Fursternberg, Doo Ri, Vera Wang , Donna Karen, Erin Featherston , Zac Posen, and John Bartlett.

So why is it that the man of the hour, the winner of Womenswear Designer of The Year, Francisco Costa of Calvin Klein seems unable to stand alone? Every photo we have of him has been while swanning about with a certain beauty in white.

The CFDA presents the Womenswear Designer of the Year award annually to an American designer who has made the most outstanding contribution to and has influenced the direction of women's ready-to-wear fashion with his or her most recent spring and fall collections. The award nominees and winner were selected by the CFDA membership, comprised of a peer group of designers, editors, retailers and stylists. Other nominees for this prestigious category included Marc Jacobs, and Proenza Schouler’s Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough. Winning this award is no small matter. It very much makes you worthy of standing on your own two feet to be adored by the masses of photographers. To make matters worse (or better) Mr. Costa received the very same award in 2006 when he was nominated alongside the same designers.

We think its time for you to leave the embrace of your beauty Mr. Costa and stand alone. Surely after all of this time you deserve to have the limelight by yourself.

The CFDA 2008 Fashion Awards were last night. Reports on the event can be found in WWD, The AP, Marie Claire, Elle UK and Vogue.com.

The fabric of our lives could unravel under pressure from the World Trade Organization. The appellate body of the WTO on Monday rejected a U.S. challenge to a compliance panel decision that sided with Brazil in its claims the U.S. had not fully implemented judgments finding its cotton subsidies in breach of global rules. The ruling advances the prospects of Brazil imposing punitive tariffs against the U.S. of as much as $1 billion. That is a stiff price for such a soft fabric.

Jewel tones remain popular as the cruise market continues unabated. Versace, shown here, really goes with the trend.

There may be a downturn but people are still shopping online to the tune of a 35% retail increase.

Being green is important to American Apparel & Footwear Association. They had their first sustainability conference at the Fashion Institute of Technology last Thursday.

Despite a Death in the Family, the CFDA Awards March On
>> While the "fashion Oscars" are a time for celebration, this year, many attendees had another recent event on their minds — the recently deceased Yves Saint Laurent. In tribute, Diane von Furstenberg wore vintage YSL, Naomi Campbell donned Fall 2008 Saint Laurent, and Ashley Olsen riffed on Le Smoking in her Calvin Klein suit.

As expected, models and designers turned out in droves — Erin Wasson, still in leg cast, was by Alexander Wang's side, and Francisco Costa celebrated his Womenswear win by hugging Eva Mendes tight.
