>> After Teen Vogue dropped all connections with The Hills earlier this year, TV refugee Whitney Port turned to Kelly Cutrone and her fashion PR firm People's Revolution for new employ.
Now comes the news that MTV is working on a Hills spin-off focusing on Whitney working bicoastally for People's Revolution, flitting between LA and New York, and befriending shunned socialite Olivia Palermo.
Kelly Cutrone must be feeling the spotlight love — just like Elle — but I wonder who else will pop up on the show unexpectedly?

Marc Jacobs Resort 2009
Our network partner, Fashion Indie, reported this morning on the Marc Jacobs Resort 2009 collection. His take on the collection (and the title to his post)? "Jewel-Toned Heart Adorned Kimono Wearing Gladiators from the 90’s Enslave Powersuit Wearing Women from the 80’s with Bows". Well, 'aint that a mouthful. The Marc Jacobs Resort 2009 collection was, indeed, a menagerie of cultural references (as usual, eh?) but one unified sentiment stood out to us.

Yves Saint Laurent, who passed away this weekend, pioneered the iconic look known as Le Smoking. That suit, in the mid-late 1960's, emboldened suiting for women and gave them, perhaps for the first time in a long time, a sleek, powerful silhouette. Now, it's impossible that Marc Jacobs could have anticipated Yves Saint Laurent's death (Jacobs can be perverse, not that much so) but it does strike us as one of those coincidences we might attribute to the collective unconscious.
Le Smoking, as everyone knows, single handedly gave way to the all-encompassing 'power suit'. The Le Smoking look, reinterpreted many times by Saint Laurent himself, encouraged strong shouldered blouses and jackets and androgynous trousers on every working woman from the 1970's clear through the 1990's. The Jacobs Resort collection, whether referencing the 1980's or 1990's has this silhouette in mind. Jacobs, for Resort, called up the power suit (with a definite nod to French style--also relevant) as a source of inspiration and this, to us, is a coincidence that only solidifies how unforgettable and irreplaceable are both Yves Saint Laurent and Marc Jacobs to fashion.

Hundreds Turn Out To Mourn at Yves Saint Laurent's Funeral
Applause erupted from the hundreds of onlookers as the designer's coffin was carried into the Eglise Saint-Roch for the funeral mass. A string quartet played as invited guests took their seats in a church decorated with jasmine and white lilies.
During services, former YSL muse Catherine Deneuve, visibly moved, gave a reading from a Walt Whitman poem, followed by a eulogy from Pierre Berge, Saint Laurent's former lover and long-time business partner: "He turned fashion on its head, making it socially relevant rather than merely aesthetic. With Saint Laurent, women ceased being merely clothes-horses or the objects of designer fantasies."
As expected, a number of fashion figures attended — John Galliano, Christian Lacroix, Claudia Schiffer, Laetitia Casta — but noticeably absent was rival Karl Lagerfeld, who according to a Chanel spokesperson was "away on business." Most of the women attendees were dressed in pants suits, in tribute to the designer's reputation as the man who put women in pants.
Yves Saint Laurent's body will be cremated and then scattered in the Majorelle Gardens in Morocco, where he spent much of his life. A short video of the services is here.

Hermes won a lawsuit against Ebay for their failure to closely monitor the sale of counterfeit goods. Although the total amount awarded to Hermes, a mere 31,000 dollars, wasn't much to speak of, the ruling establishes a greater sense of obligation for retailers to participate in the fight against counterfeiting. The same cannot be said, however, for copyright infringement. Yesterday, we reported on the Donney & Bourke versus Louis Vuitton ruling which favored, what some have called, the fakes.
This Paris Fashion Week, Thierry Mugler will resurrect 21 ready to wear designs for a women's show. The fashion house's creative director, Rosemary Rodriguez, will be in charge of reinterpreting these iconic designs in what will surely give Paris Fashion Week another reason to call itself the best.
Bottega Veneta earned the top spot in the Luxury Institute's 2008 Luxury Brand Status Index. The brand, when asked about their opinions on quality control, acknowledged that outsourcing has given the industry much more to think about. They sited Zara and H&M as companies that are capable of high quality garments, because of access to manufacturing facilities not unlike those that higher end companies use.
VF Corp, who recently acquired Seven For All Mankind, has taken stake (one third) in Mo Industries, parent of both Ella Moss and Splendid. VF Corp acknowledged that Mo Industries has demonstrated incredible growth and consumer loyalty in recent years which leads them to believe the brands can be grown in terms of range and distribution. Revenue for the two brands has tripled since 2004, making their earnings just over 80 million last year. If all goes well, we're anticipating more on the high price point end (Ella Moss already has a higher price point line called Black Label), greater international distribution, and perhaps even some brick and mortar ventures.
