Adam Lippes Loves Dogs
He is such a catch. Designer Adam Lippes will host a dog adoption party in the Meatpacking District this weekend. The event, this Friday, will be co-hosted by the ASPCA and the festivities will continue through the weekend. If you're in New York, check out the windows of the Adam shop on Hudson street for the wittle doggies Adam loves, up for adoption. It's a nice reminder that fashion isn't just champagne toasting, panic attacks, and a constant dialogue about the recession. The all-American designer, with experience at Ralph Lauren and Oscar de la Renta, is just the guy to remind us of that fact.
What: Adam Loves Dogs
When: April 4-6th 2008
Where: 678 Hudson Street, NY, NY

Business of Fashion Shoutout: Stella McCartney
Our network partner, The Business of Fashion, recaps Stella McCartney's store openings in India and Asia. Recent partnerships will put her silk trousers, her breezy dresses and studded platforms in all of the major cities. As Business of Fashion reports, this venture may or may not be a risky one as the luxury market, in both India and Asia, faces a unique set of challenges and consumer discrepancies. He writes, 'recent questions about the impact of a global economic slowdown in Asia don't seem to be holding luxury brands from aggressively betting on these markets to get them through the economic dip'. Check out this interesting report from Business of Fashion, as well as our coverage of McCartney's collaboration with one of many emerging New Zealand brands, namely, the lingerie line Bendon.
Collab Mad: Comme des Tiers État
Just when you think all possible interesting designer collaborations have been exhausted something new pops up. The frenzy for coolest possible fast fashion line has been won by Swedish retail giant H&M. For its next designer collaboration, H&M is bringing the Japanese avant-garde to the masses with a line by Rei Kawakubo.
A one-time Comme des Garçons for H&M collection is slated to launch in early November as the Swedish fast-fashion giant opens its first stores in Japan: a 10,000-square-foot unit in Tokyo’s Ginza district and a 16,000-square-foot location in hyper-trendy Harajuku. An international rollout will follow.
We are unsure just how the Kawakubo's highly conceptual work will translate into clothing for the hoi polloi. As much as many a young hipster or art student craves a Comme des Garçons look, Kawakubo's designs in cheap polyester could end up leaving the joke on the third estate. The line will include apparel and accessories for women, men, children, and a first for H&M, a unisex fragrance.
While we admit the last time we shopped an H&M collaboration was Stella McCartney three years ago we think we might have to check this one out. But in the end we remain skeptical. Comme des Garcons specializes in deconstructed garments. That austere look works with fine materials and great styling, but go cheap and we are going to look cheap. Her preferred color palette of black, grays, and whites won't help matters either there won't be vibrant prints or colors to distract from the poor construction. On the bright side, draped, frayed, and unfinished materials with the occasional hole or asymmetry means that even if the goods you buy start to disintegrate no one is going to notice. Well, either that or it will look terrible and not in that effortless good way. Thus instead of looking like the boys you will just look like the poverty stricken third estate. Which if you shop this line you probably are anyway.

Pretty Little Thing Jewelry
New York designer, Pretty Little Thing, isn't as harmless as her name suggests. Lirany Vasquez, the designer, makes jewelry with an attitude. With Spring pieces titled as the 'Weapon Charm Necklace' and the 'Sterling Silver Bullet Earring', you realize that, in addition to making coveted jewelry, the designer has enough wit to thrive in the industry. Vasquez studied English and started her career off as a fashion journalist before realizing "she no longer wanted to write about fashion but instead [wanted to] contribute something to it". In spite of this decision, Vasquez has been well received by the press over the few short years that her company has been in operation. Pretty Little Thing is sold in boutiques all over the world, including London, Los Angeles, New York, and just this year, Japan. That kind of distribution isn't anything to scoff at, especially coming from a girl who resides in the East Village, makin' jewelry.
